  1. That battery specs 20 amp charge rate and maximum voltage of 14.5v. My thoughts are if this battery is depleted to any significant degree the converter will provide up to 55 amps and try to charge to 14.7v.
  2. A good example as to why I wear an N95 mask. Some others won't be masked at all or improperly wear a mask or wear an ineffective mask or... An N95 mask provides excellent protection for the person wearing it and those around them.
  3. Most BMS's have a maximum amount of current that will pass in or out and typically act like a circuit breaker. If that current limit is exceeded the BMS will open the circuit. Over charging to an unsafe voltage is also limited with most BMS's but as long as the cells are balanced and the charger is set to the correct voltage the BMS will not restrict the charging as the battery will only charge to the chargers set voltage. One BMS 2 different functions. Another function of many BMS's is to maintain safe voltages, to high or to low in each cell. If these voltages are outside of the limits the BMS will also open the circuit.
  4. Lithium batteries are rated for the maximum charge amps. Typically .5c to 1c but it varies. A BMS will also likely restrict the amount of current allowed through it. Many times it will just open the circuit for charging or even stop all current in or out for a period of time if that value is exceeded.
  5. When we received our booster shots at the health dept. they required medical grade masks. Other masks including cloth masks were not acceptable. Some airlines are also requiring high quality masks such as N95 masks.
  6. We had to haul water for our house for a couple of years. We used a 425 gallon unbaffled tank in a 3/4 ton diesel. This was in the mountains. While I could feel the sloshing it wasn't severe or dangerous. Even with partial loads that PU was heavy enough to handle that much. I now have 2-100 gallon water tanks on our HDT. One is for fresh water and one is for waste water. Occasionally we also carry a couple of 50 gallon barrels to help our boondocking friends. Our car is a Subaru loaded length wise with the tanks on either side of the car. I can't detect the sloshing at all on the HDT.
  7. I have done what you describe and it seemed to work. I would think it is important to make sure the ring connectors are together with nothing between these. Steel or even stainless steel are not the best conductors.. Any connection is a potential problem or failure point so I would keep an eye on it. I would also test the connection for heat during the heaviest likely load. This type of connection is not likely to be a "recommended " procedure so I wouldn't expect it to be standard or an engineering practice. If you want to you could check for voltage loss through the connection with a volt meter. Bottom line is I think it will work.
  8. I have been an advocate of good masks for a long time. Had these quality masks been available and recommended I believe it would have saved lives. If one is going to go to the trouble and expense it only makes sense to wear a good mask. The one draw back to the better masks, at least for me is if I am doing something strenuous it is hard to catch my breath. Another slight irritant is these need to be worn tightly to eliminate leaks. In time this can be uncomfortable. In any case being vaccinated, wearing a quality mask and social distancing is about as good of protection one could have. With that protection I am relatively confident I can run to the store or whatever but we still don't eat out and avoid crowds.
  9. You are so right. The MC4 connectors are not as reliable as one would hope. This is on a temporary ground mount so I am just living with it but even though I fixed the one connector that failed there is another problem. 2 strings of 3 panels in series and one measures 8 amps the other 7 amps. Shorted each of the solar panels read about the same. 1 amp at 100v is quite a bit of difference
  10. To determine the actual amp draw a DC clamp meter is very useful. I know you are also planning a large solar panel display. A clamp meter is also useful to monitor solar panel output if a problem arises. I recently found a bad MC4 connector on one of our arrays with the help of the meter.
  11. I am fully vaccinated and will get a booster when time allows. Still when in indoor public places I wear an N95 mask and social distance. With this protection I don't worry if others are vaccinated or not.
  12. The original battery compartment on our 5er was small so I moved it to a larger compartment. I insulated it and drilled some holes to allow heated and cooled air to circulate. To make sure the batteries can charge in cold weather I also added a small inexpensive, thermostat and heating pad just incase. The BMS also has cold temp shut off. Many people put these batteries inside in a closet or under their bed. I have 800 amp hours at 12v but we need more to heat with the mini split.
  13. Yes, but it needs to be split phase 240v as the neutral is rated to carry 50 amps max. Split phase cancels out much of the current the neutral would have to carry. If all of the power were to be straight 120v that would be 100 amps on the neutral.
  14. Just thought about 12,000 watts on an RV main panel would need to be 240v or the neutral could be overloaded. This is assuming you have 50amp service.
  15. I believe the auto transformer also has a continuous draw that would need to be considered but other than that those seem to work well. The HF typically draw less and with 3, one or 2 could be disabled during times of less demand to reduce standby draw. Hopefully others with experience with these chime in.
  16. The amount of inverter draw might help to decide. Lower continuous draw is better but I would also like multiple units incase of failure.
  17. I turn off the BMS's. A battery cutoff doesn't have to be on the positive side. However, you are right that when working on a battery there is inherent risk that cannot be avoided.
  18. We have a Medicare advantage plan and have used it in multiple states. We haven't had a problem finding medical care. In fact all of the places we have asked accepted our plan. There are different advantage plans and levels of coverage. I wouldn't trade this plan for any other plan.
  19. On our houseboat we used a WaterFixer and a RV water pump to fill our water tank. We used that water for everything including drinking.
  20. The spring in our Sealand toilet breakes every year or 2. I keep a spare on hand. Lifting the pedal is kind of pain.
  21. Years ago we purchased a 5er with OEM Goodyear tires. On one trip we blew ALL 4 tires. After we returned home, I went to Discount Tire and they told me there was a silent recall on those tires. I have no idea what that is but Goodyear paid for the significant damage to our 5er and new tires after they examined the old tires. While Goodyear did pay it certainly didn't atone for all of the tire changing on the side of the road and trying to purchase tires just to get home. Their tires endangered the lives of the people around us and our life. I don't buy Goodyear tires!
  22. I had our house insured with a company that was described as a "Nationwide company" but a different name. We had a large claim and at first they sent a forensic engineer to determine if this was a covered loss. When it was determined to be covered they were very professional and paid the bills until a point at which they felt they no longer needed to. After arguing with them without results I escalated it to the state insurance commission. They wrote a letter to the company president asking for an explanation. Suddenly they became much more agreeable and the job was finished. However, some of the people who originally denied some payments sent me some letters that were not very professional and we have a different insurer.
  23. I self direct my investments. Index funds are simple and the returns have been pretty good. I haven't bothered to check lately but I know it is more than 10%. With the right selection of low cost index funds one can easily stay diversified and index funds have proven to beat most managed funds. I don't spend much time managing it. Most of our funds are after tax investments so tax efficiency is important to me. Index mutual funds also check that box. I only have a small IRA and I just kinda play with that but a few years ago I also used it to buy more index funds. It has now starting building steam but the taxes on withdrawals bite a bit. The after tax investments are long term capital gains. I don't know if that is better overall but at least the checks to the government are smaller now.
  24. The state park at Ridgeway reservoir is a good spot for a big rig. If I remember correctly the pull throughs are 90'
