Slixter
We’re heading to BC from Ontario for the winter in late October. Going to take our time but not too much time for weather reasons. Has anyone on here traversed the Rockies? I’d like to overnight at least once while going through them and am looking for suggestions. Our final destination is Langley. TIA. Darryl&Rita
Watch every episode of "Highway Through Hell" that you can get your hands on. Take notes on what NOT to do. Keep an eye on your cell phone for the weather report, even though cell service is spotty through the mountains. We use Wunderground.com and windy.com, along with the local 511 website. If you stop inside either of the national parks, you'll need to purchase a Parcs Canada pass, but not required if only passing through. Hotels are cheaper outside the parks' limits, too. Food is likewise. Most of the touristy things to do will be shut down, but skiing will be picking up. What are your interests? Lots of interests but on this trip through just looking to stop for 1 night. I’ve driven truck for years so trip planning is second nature. In all my years though I’ve never run the Rockies. My region was the Appalachians, Poconos, just the little east coast stuff.
Nigel
Tunnel Mountain Campground just outside of Banff is spectacular and they have hundreds of sites that will accommodate you. I don’t care for the town of Banff it caters to rich tourists. I much prefer Jasper it feels like real people live there. Take your time coming back there are many must see places along the way. Nigel Thanks Nigel. Yes, going to take a month or so in the spring. I’ll check out Tunnel Mountain CG
Darryl&Rita
Sorry, I didn't consider camping during your travels, due to weather conditions. Of the four campgrounds around Tunnel Mountain, three close Oct. 3 for the winter, so make sure to make reservations at the right one. You'd probably need to winterize your RV, too, just in case. It's beautiful country, just not a place I'd willingly bring my house to at that time of year. Transiting, yes. Staying, no. Maybe I’ll leave the sightseeing for the way back.
Darryl&Rita
There is a lot of great hiking areas still open at that time of the year, but the weather is going to be a gamble. We do a crossing of Montana and Idaho around the same time, and seriously watch the weather. The elevation makes a difference. noteven
I would travel Hwy 3 at that time year if you aren't in a Big Hurry. Right from MB to Hope BC Quote "Are we there yet?" asked no motorcycle rider, ever.

If we have to sit for a day in Alberta and wait for weather I will.

Darryl&Rita
As a "for instance", there was snow on the road sides this week, on Hwy 40. Different stretch of road, further east, but similar elevation. It didn't last, but there'll be more.
