GlennWest
This is the original one that has been trouble free. It comes on, runs a while, and then just hums. I went up on roof today to remove cover and it shut down before I got it off. The motor was too hot to touch and compressor also. Did not sound like a capacitor. Fan turns easily. had not thrown breaker, just shut down for heat i assume.
GlennWest
If it is a burnt out unit it's good timing. Was considering a mni split in the living room. could put the new living room unit in bedroom. update, The compressor motor dragging and getting hot, shut down. So either put good money in a 13 year old unit or go ahead with mini split and transfer newer unit to bedroom.
Ray,IN
At 13 yrs I would not invest more money in that unit, everything is that old and failures are to be expected. I'm expecting my basement heat pump to expire any day, as it's 18 now. I'm just glad new units are available, even if they are close to $3,000. oldjohnt
If the compressor is overheating and a thermal overload protector is tripping out ahead of the overcurrent protection (and its NOT caused by another problem in the circuitry or low voltage etc. ????), as you're aware it don't sound good for the compressor, and at that age, I like the idea of an upgrade as it's better then throwing good money after bad..It wouldn't hurt to know the voltage under load and the current draw just in case low voltage was a problem. GlennWest
I am going ahead with the mini split. Was going to upgrade brakes but my spare time very liminited. Only 1 project at a time. Ac will be needed soon. Likely not move till mid summer
I'mdonewiththis forum
That sounds like a good plan, Glenn. One thing I learned about refrigeration compressors is that when you need to put a new start capacitor on due to it burning out you will need a compressor fairly soon.
