SWharton Posted October 9, 2016 Report Posted October 9, 2016 We used a tripod for years and channel switching was fine. Since we switched to a Travel'er we noticed there is a definite lag in channel switching. Is this normal????
chirakawa Posted October 9, 2016 Report Posted October 9, 2016 Yes, it's normal. It's also normal when using a tripod. Maybe, you just didn't notice it before. Everybody wanna hear the truth, but everybody tell a lie. Everybody wanna go to Heaven, but nobody want to die. Albert King
SWharton Posted October 9, 2016 Author Report Posted October 9, 2016 No, it is much slower on the Trav'ler. We haven't had to set up our tripod so far this trip. Previously we had a non-SWM tripod and had no problems with switching, no black screen waiting for the switch. Maybe it is inherent in SWM technology but we don't have the problem in our S&B which is SWM. Not critical, just curious. Thanks.
Mark and Dale Bruss Posted October 9, 2016 Report Posted October 9, 2016 Has to be in the SWM technology. The Trav'ler just positions the dish and the LNBF head. The LNBF is jut the same as on the tripod dish. Or is it a different receiver, you didn't say. docj Posted October 9, 2016 Report Posted October 9, 2016 The Trav'ler is not involved in the process of switching channels other than to the extent that the cables from the LNBs pass through its structure. If the signal strength is acceptable then the process of switching from one channel to another is controlled by the DirecTV receiver. Even though the SWM technology only requires a single cable going to the receiver, there are, no doubt, separate cables coming out of the Ku and Ka band LNBs on the arm of the Trav'ler. Those have to be combined in a device similar to a SWM8 switch somewhere inside the Trav'ler. That's where I would start looking to make sure all connections are clean and tight. We have an HR44 Genie, a C41 wired miniGenie and a C41W wireless mini. With the main receiver commands, including channel changing, are nearly instantaneous. With the C41 they are a bit slower and with the wireless mini there is a noticeable delay before the new channel is displayed. SWharton Posted October 9, 2016 Author Report Posted October 9, 2016 We have an HR24 receiver, have had the same receiver for a couple of years. We will check connections when we get a chance. Wish Directv would allow 2 Genies per account, really like the Genie in the S&B.
docj Posted October 9, 2016 Report Posted October 9, 2016 Wish Directv would allow 2 Genies per account, really like the Genie in the S&B. Although this is pure speculation, I wouldn't be surprised if part of the reason for this rule is to reduce account fraud. If you have several HR24's or equivalent devices in your home, it is pretty easy for you to give one to a struggling child setting up his own place or someone else who doesn't live with you. Although this violates the DirecTV TOS, it's difficult to enforce this. OTOH if you have an installation that consists of a Genie and multiple miniGenie clients you have nothing you can lend to someone else. Therefore, there is no rationale for DTV to allow you to have multiple Genies. Sure, you can still have a Genie and can use HR24's instead of miniGenies so you could still lend out one of your receivers, but most people are probably going with the Genie and mini's since that's what DTV pushes. chuckbear Posted October 10, 2016 Report Posted October 10, 2016 You HR24 is going to be slow changing channels, it is the receiver. If your tripod was using a standard definition dish, it will be almost instant. With SWM and HD, the channel changes and response to the remote sometimes seem like they take forever. The only option you have is a newer receiver. The Trav'ler has nothing to do with this as others have said. Chuck Chuck and Susan 1999 Fleetwood Bounder 34 Triton V10 on Ford Chassis
SWharton Posted October 10, 2016 Author Report Posted October 10, 2016 Previously we had a non-SWM tripod setup and had fast response. We are in a cg for 3-4 days and I will check all the connections. Thanks.

Chuck When we changed from an HR22 to an H44 Genie the change in performance was very noticeable. Newer hardware incorporates newer, faster processors and that makes a big difference in the device's ability to perform basic commands. To say nothing of the fact that the HR44 is smaller and runs noticeably cooler than the older units.
