Microsoft starts rolling out Windows 10 to Windows Phone 8.1 users

Microsoft is starting the rollout of Windows 10 Mobile to some of those with Windows Phone 8.1 devices! Yaaaay!

I just tried to update but it is not available yet. Some notes are in order here. We are obviously getting a beta. Some features are being deprecated. Huh? Oh that means that they will no longer work, or are being dropped. I scanned the list an none of them are being used by me now. Hey Cortana did not work before and won't work if it did on your phones. So you will need to read all the links I will provide below to see if you will be inconvenienced by not having message and email notifications on the phone and message tile working "for now." as they put it. Some of the new features are hardware dependent, so will not work on older phones then the two newest models I would guess. So I see new phones in our future. Yes we buy them outright so do not incur obligations to the company. Lots to digest. I will upgrade to 10 as soon as it is available because for better or worse, my Significant Harassment depends on me to keep the home tech working and I have to know the answers or where to get them here for both of us.

So here are the first hard facts released today!

Excerpt:

"The availability of Windows 10 Mobile as an upgrade "will vary by device manufacturer, device model, country or region, mobile operator or service provider, hardware limitations and other factors," according to Microsoft's "How to Get Windows 10 Mobile" page.

If and when the update is available, users will need to plug their phones in and connect to Wi-Fi to get the update. They also will have to free up enough storage space to download and install the update. The Microsoft Upgrade Advisor app will help users figure out how to free up space to install the upgrade.

These phones are eligible to get the upgrade:

•Lumia 1520
•Lumia 930
•Lumia 640, 640 XL
•Lumia 730
•Lumia 735
•Lumia 830
•Lumia 532
•Lumia 535
•Lumia 540
•Lumia 635 1GB,
•Lumia 636 1GB,
•Lumia 638 1GB,
•Lumia 430
•Lumia 435
•BLU Win HD w510u
•BLU Win HD LTE x150q
•MCJ Madosma Q501

Because some of the Windows 10 Mobile features are hardware dependent, certain Windows 10 Mobile features like Continuum and Windows Hello won't work on existing phones that are updated to Windows 10 Mobile.

There are also a number of current Windows Phone 8.1 features that users will lose or see modified if they update to Windows 10 Mobile.

Among those features that may be modified or removed: Me Tile and Me Card; notifications for missed calls, messages and emails on contact tiles; Cortana's ability to search for apps, settings, email, text messages, contacts and QR Codes on the device; ability to open apps through voice commands; and MDM functionality to prevent saving and sharing Office documents. The full list of deprecated features is here, under the Mobile tab.

Microsoft released to manufacturing Windows 10 Mobile back in November and made it available since then on several new Windows Phone handsets, starting with the Lumia 950 and 950 XL. Since that time, the company has been updating and fixing Windows 10 Mobile."

Please go to the full article as there are a lot of active links to the applicable Microsoft lists and feature explanations. I would advise while we wait that we all read all the facts available now so as not to be caught by surprise later. THe full article with all links and related stories is here: http://www.zdnet.com/article/microsoft-starts-rolling-out-windows-10-to-windows-phone-8-1-users/?tag=nl.e589&s_cid=e589&ttag=e589&ftag=TREc64629f

Microsoft also posted today a list of Windows Phones that, after updating to Windows 10 Mobile, will be eligible to be part of the Windows 10 Mobile Insider preview, moving forward: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/preview-supported-phones

Here’s an overview of requirements, editions and languages available for Windows 10. Click on mobile over the Table of Contents if PC is selected in blue. It also has the full list of deprecated features: https://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/windows/windows-10-specifications?OCID=win10_null_vanity_win10specs#upgavailphone

I could not get the Upgrade advisor App from the Windows store but when it is available here is how to get it: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-10/windows-10-mobile-upgrade-advisor

Here is the Microsoft page on How to get Windows 10 mobile: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-10/how-to-get-windows-10-mobile

Any new items we missed please post so we can all let each other know how it works out and share fixes as they become available.

AND as far as I am concerned they can contact Verizon and add that 10 Gb back to my acct or I will see how well $hit rolls downhill.

Hey RV - Wish MS luck on this roll out... Window 10 has not been painless for them so far. But I mentioned in a post under Finance & Investing, that I was optimistic this would be a great expansion opportunity for MS. With the business community still largely 'locked into' MS, the total integration of the smartphones with network services of large corporations, should prove to be a great benefit. And with many in the workforce having to deal with 10 in there professional jobs (now along with phones too) - very good chance that they may elect over the years ahead to shift over to Windows Based phones for personal use too.

It's been years in the making, with a few false starts over the last decade. If MS had embraced this back at the end of the 90's when we gave them 'Here is what we would want...' feedback as a Fortune 25 corporation, they very well could have knocked Blackberry out way earlier, as well as had much more of the personal phone/data business that Apple and Google(Droid) now serve.

By the way. As a follow on from the Finance and Investing post. I did jump in, and put in a exit point at 20% increase (Off of memory, usually get out at 15% on short term rides, but pretty sure I set this one to 20%.) - that took place in under 50 days:)! May ratchet back in again on the next dip...

Best,

Rich I am convinced you are right. Apple made a mistake in opting to not have user easily replaceable batteries or to have Micro SD card expansion because they wanted instead to sell much more expensive internal ROM and also in the early days to keep music on their expensive iPOds which are now disappearing and going the way of the late to the party Zune. I also think Apple is going to lose the race for tablets because they have no OSX touch systems, not tablets, not desktops, not laptops. I owned two Galaxy Tabs early on, and the thing that just kept aggravating me was the lack of PC interaction standards, I could not print from it directly but could attach a wireless keyboard and mouse via the USB adapter. They actually started the touch platform direction and simply left the field to innovators as they tried to keep the same separate devices doing in three devices, a tablet, a laptop/desktop, and an iPod, none of which are cheap, to do the same as a Windows tablet, or a Samsung tablet, or any Android device as they have it all in one save a real productivity environment that transitions as you bring up, directly into the enterprise and the Military and government offices.

Good move on Tesla! $143.67 on Feb 10th just five weeks or so ago to today's close of $232.74, a gain of $89.07 in about a month. I try to tell folks but they miss it. You've watched and got in/out where every time I was tempted I found it to not go lower to let me buy it back for less with more shares. The wet weather has messed us up and we have to hold off building our decks and doing the final landscaping here because no equipment can work, not even my riding lawnmower without getting stuck and doing more damage. I could have bought a month ago, but did not. We both know it will be going over $300 on the 31st or close.

So good on you bud! I am happy for you as you listened and did it your way. Huah!

Right now the manufacturers brands are all providing a Windows Tablet but the Surface line is rapidly gaining ground. And they have both the top line power systems as well as the middle and bottom. I believe that the now being called Surface phones will challenge the iPhone, but the Android phones will hang in there at the top since they can be had for $100-$175 ordering direct from China, for phones that are the same as the ones here for $500-$699.

However had HP been smart they would have kept the original sculpted aluminum 11.6" 2012 HP x2 hybrid like I had ,and built it in a Z3770 like Dell did with its Venue Pro series, then kept that ultra thin sculpted x2 case and 11.6" screen and evolved it with the Z3000 series and now the Atom x7 Z8700 chipset like the Surface 3, not Pro like I have.

Now MS is making the right moves to keep their flagship Windows 10 system the most versatile with the new 10 mobile as well as the hardware they are using and developing for the new Surface Windows mobile phones. They need to keep one flagship and advance it per year like the iPhone, but also keep the 7335 Lumia types like we have. Fantastic Carl Zeiss lenses and cameras front and back. You are seeing it too. It is not about slamming other OS', but dang, they need to keep up with MS for a change.

Nope,

They blew another deadline and I have no idea when or where. It should come in as an update pushed to the phone. You can get it by joining the Windows insider programs and downloading it to your phone from here.

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/preview-download-phone

I do not recommend that unless you are a developer and comfortable with the possibility of bricking your phone.

Me, I am waiting for the ready for the consumers version when it is pushed to my phone like 8.1 was pushed and denim version.

I see from the computer thread you have upgraded to Win Mobile 10. How was the upgrade? Was the Advisory Upgrade App easy to find in the App Store? What are you thinking of it so far? I have been telling my GD in HI that it is coming just to hang on. Is this the time to tell her to go ahead on her Lumia 640 Win 8.1 phone with the upgrade?

Yep, it is easy to find and download. Here is a link to see it isa there and the exact name, but it will say that this will not work on your device when yo connect to the download page with a PC as it is only for mobiles.

https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/store/apps/upgrade-advisor/9nblggh0f5g4

Tell her to download it and run it. I can't guarantee she will love it or hate it, but I like it even though I haven't figured it all out yet.

Have her read and click on every link on this MS page before she does. https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/Windows-10-specifications?type=mobile#upgavailphone

Thanks. Some of the feature deprecations kind of suck. I wonder if some of those lost capabilities will be returned in later updates? I might tell the GD to just sit on it awhile before upgrading and see if Microsoft tweaks Mobile 10 first?

I didn't use any of the dropped features so that part was a wash. She might as well go as it works fine and any changes will come down in updates manually requested or automatically depending on how you set the settings.
