I am still running Windows XP Proon my Dell D610 laptop. I use Mozilla Firefox. Lately when I want to play a Youtube video, for example, it tells me that I should update to a safer version. When I try it says it failed to complete the update. Does anyone know what the problem might be? I get a prompt at the top of the screen stating that Firefox has prevented the outdated plugin form running. It asks if I want to allow or continue blocking. If I allow it works. Any suggestions?

Both of you might want to run a current, updated anti malware scanner.

Uninstall Java!

If you find a daily need for it then just load it and keep it updated. How do you know? When you try to do something that needs Java it tells you. We use it only for scanning our checks to our bank as they require Java. So we actually download it once or three times a month and then uninstall it when done. With fast cable Internet it takes just a minute each way.

For updating your software try this, Patch My PC (free) No adware or scams in this. I've checked it out and put it on my systems to test it. I don't use a lot of the software it test for updates but it does do an excellent job for Windows and Adobe/Java.

Run Norton's free tool just to be sure. It checks for Rootkits that loads before Windows. The others might miss those.

You can find it here: https://security.symantec.com/nbrt/npe.aspx

It will check online for updates first then ask you to allow it to restart immediately, do it, then it will continue to scan after the rootkit inspection and the scan is pretty fast.

PUPs need killing as do tool bars that did not come OEM with your browser, and some of those too!
