You guys had me scared, I just upgraded from a 37ft TT to a 43ft 5th wheel and they never mentioned that I might be over payload even though Im well under towing capabilities. I checked my door tag on my 2020 2500hd duramax and it says max payload of 3300 lbs which is more then enough. Did they just increase the payload for newer trucks?

How much does your truck and trailer weigh FULLY LOADED? How much of that is pin weight? You may be barely within the ratings, but I can assure you I would never under any circumstances tow a 43' camper with a light duty 3/4 ton truck. Lives are more important than that. Jay

  2. Have you looked into a UPS store? Often those type of private mail stores will provide a physical street address for various purposes, including package and certified mail receipt, etc.

Re the jury issue. I can't speak to AZ, but as an over the road driver for decades, I routinely wouldn't get my mail until long after the intended date. If my wife was home she would call, but after that, I just ignored it. If I got called on the carpet, I could show where I was at the time and I'm sure the judge would understand that I NEVER GOT MY MAIL. You can't report if you didn't get it. Many many summons recipients never respond. They cannot as a practical matter chase everyone. Jay

  3. You don't HAVE to change out your tires at 5-6 years, but at that point you're suffering the effects of uv and sun damage on tires, which weakens them to the point that you are significantly more at risk for a blowout. Considering the safety risks and potential extensive damage to the RV, new tires seem like very inexpensive insurance. YMMV... Jay

P.S. Also, I like to guess at how many sets of tires I might need over the time I own the vehicle. That helps me decide when is best to replace them.

The 2 toll roads I posted about are both east of the Rocky Mountains. E470 is a bypass from I70 to I25 on the east side of Denver. Northwest Parkway is access from north I25 to the suburbs to the west into the foothills just north of Denver.       😉

...which is why I said Rocky Mountains/Colorado.... In other words, east of the Rocky Mountains AND Colorado. Jay

I wonder if someday they will find some way to standardize so that each one can talk to the last one's transponder? In this age of electronic media, one wouldn't think that it would be that difficult.

I believe they were supposed to standardize by about 2004, but we can see how that's been going. Jay

How many different transponders do you have in order to always be covered on all toll roads? There are 38 states that have toll roads or bridges and some are like CO with multiple toll authorities. Fortunately, most transponders will work with more than one toll authority but so far they have not standardized and there are at least 17 different transponders.

List of toll tags for each state

Fortunately, you only need two transponders east of the Rockies/Colorado. EZPass covers all the eastern states, plus you'll need the TX/OK/KS pass. I have the KS pass and an OH EZPass. I've never used a toll road in CO and I no longer go to CA. In my experience, IL is the most difficult of the systems to deal with if you're not using a transponder. Jay

With CO it depends upon the toll authority. The last time we were there I used 2 different ones. The Northwest Parkway authority mailed a bill based on our license plate that arrived about 3 weeks later, asking that we pay within 60 days of the billing date to avoid any penalty. The E470 authority had 2 different bills for out travel out and back and both were sent 4 times to the wrong address, then turned over for collection. They used the address that we had 5 years before when on that road. When I got the bill at last they pushed the $32 toll up to $78 with penalties for each of the two. I called and pointed out that the collection people sent to the right address and offered to pay the original amount and they said that to do so I would need to prove to them that I had moved before they sent the bill.

And therein lies the issue with waiting on the governing authority for toll billing. Penalties are common and frequent and it's NEVER their fault or problem. So I prefer to be proactive and take care of it up front. Jay

It has been several years since I was last in that area but when we were we had no transponders accepted by the toll authority. It took quite a while but we were mailed a bill that could be paid by return mail or online. Are you saying that they don't do that now?

My experience is also years ago, perhaps not long after they eliminated the manned booths. At that time, their response was to look it up and pay it, but surely they've refined their system since that. I've had EZPass for many years, so I can't speak to their current system. I would certainly think that they would eventually send some kind of bill, but my reading at that time was then there would be penalties. Jay

  9. There are NO manned toll booths around Chicago. You can do toll by plate, but that actually doesn't work very well, unless they've improved it. Before I had EZPass, you were expected to look up each toll gate, calculate how much you owed and submit it. There was no way to look it up by plate. The very best way is to get an EZPass account with transponder. Then, you can just fly through with any truck legal lane. EZPass works in most eastern states, so it's a valuable asset. Jay

  10. You know, those pass throughs have been known to fail. I would have random missing on my number six cylinder and it never got fixed. Only playing around, pretending to diagnose and more bills. A shop north of Atlanta noticed that the retaining clip was broken on the pass through. Ordered the part, replaced the part, problem solved. How could it possibly take that many so called "professionals" to find that???? I'm sure I don't know, but I paid plenty of "incompetence tax" on that one. Jay

  11. To me, six vs. twelve point has more to do with fastener size and age. At 3/8" or above (or metric eq.) on older and rustier stuff, six point is always my go to. Actually, I only use twelve point when it's closer to hand and it's too much bother to go chase a six point down. Six points aren't as critical about exact fit, in general. All my newer sockets are Gearwrench. Jay

  12. As you convert it to an RV, you'll be adding a significant amount of weight. That will help improve both the ride and traction. Putting some of your heavier items as far back as possible will help transfer some of that weight toward the rear and help balance out your axle weights. Jay

Where could I purchase a regular valve at?

Any truck repair and parts place will have that. Just explain what you want to do and have them supply you with the correct valve. I don't remember exactly, because it's been over twenty years and my mechanic did it for me. Jay

  14. If you still have gladhands, they need to be blocked off so they don't leak when you push in both air buttons. If your gladhands are removed and capped, it's already done for you. Push in both buttons and watch/listen for air leaks. Alternatively, you can replace the proportioning valve with a regular valve and avoid all that. Jay

I liked it when I got it, but I think I liked my regular Samsung 7 better, except I to like the USB C for sure.

Having lots of trouble with Android Auto,  some trouble with my Pda Net and am wondering if it's the phone. Have also had missed calls and phone messages on occasion. Mostly in Cape Girardeau at the "Hospital".

Thanks for the suggestion and confirmation that 5 G isn't ready yet.

I'm guessing your missed calls and messages have more to do with your particular carrier than your phone. If you don't have a nearby tower for your carrier, you may have weak spots with low signal. Jay

  16. Why not just get a new Note 9? Is there functionality that's missing in your current phone? I'm on my second Note 9 and am very happy with it. I purchase both on eBay from a seller I trust. I don't consider 5g to be a currently viable or useful option. Maybe sometime in the future. Jay

Personally, I would not have an outdoor kitchen.  It eats into valuable storage space as well as carrying capacity.  I guess if you are a weekend user it might be of some benefit.  But I carry a small portable gas grill and a small folding table.  This has worked since 1884 as well as 10 years full time living.

I-70 west of Denver is not recommended.  It has 11,000' elevation.... definitely a biggie!

Ditto that!! After sliding on glare ice through the Eisenhower Tunnel, I've no desire to ever return - any time of year! Travel west of Denver at your own risk - and it is risky... Jay

This worked with just the first part of the URL.

You need to use the "Other Media" button and insert the link there. Jay

Hi i was watching a you tube from a hdt rally and they showed i guy with a pete that had a bw hitch sitting on his fifth wheel sliding  plate

Can i use that for a temporary period of time. Or does every one have air ride hitches.

Air ride hitches aren't mandatory, but they give a better ride to the fiver and help protect it. Plus, it's a more comfortable ride for the people passengers. Having at least an articulating hitch is a huge improvement over fixed. Jay
