Jay, I haven't heard of any such Rally. I'm often somewhere in Florida that time of year and my Solar is already installed but Id be glad to lend assistance unless I'm at a Tractor Show or Bluegrass Festival.

     John T

Thanks, John. I was thinking another Rally would just be the ticket for my install, but really, I just need help installing the panels and running the wiring down. If you're willing to help, I'd gladly welcome that. I'll check back with you in Jan. or Feb. Thanks again, Jay

    Good answers!

    Especially #2

For the OP -  "Roadtrek":  This thread is similar to many you start.

So here's a couple of questions for you:

Why do you need to know?

Why do you insert your biased opinions of why *your* choice of RV is  "best"  into other forums (like the HDT forum)?

    🤐

My opinion - worth exactly what it costs - is that the o.p. is still trying to justify to himself that $1000.00 per square foot is a perfectly reasonable price for a rapidly depreciating toy. No-one I know is that extravagant. Jay

A chihuahua or toy poodle in a bag is perfectly plausible for a variety of jobs, such as epilepsy warning or PTSD episode warnings.  No idea if that was the case there.  As far as businesses, lots of them specifically welcome dogs.  We sometimes take ours there, and always ask first.  We keep them away from people.  Many come over to pet them.  That's freedom.

Yelp has a filter for "dog friendly," you could use that to avoid those places I guess.  We just had lunch on a dog-friendly patio with other people with dogs, found it using that search.  The business owner made that choice, and got our business because of it. We were at the vet 45 minutes from home, didn't want to come back then leave again.

Best Buy was an interesting one, we really didn't know what to expect.  Asked, and the front door person looked at us like we were crazy for even asking.  "Of course!"

And by reading many of your responses over the last few months, I know you're one of the rational and considerate ones, and you think about the sensitivities of others. Unfortunately, that attitude seems to be quite rare nowadays. I was at a rest area in CO recently. The dog walk and restrictions were clearly marked, yet 3 of the 4 dog owners I saw while there walked their dogs all around the rest of the grassy area, without any consideration to the other visitors. They did, however, generally pick up behind their dogs, so at least there was that. Jay

We were just talking about Lowe's and places like that where it's legal and encouraged.  I've never seen an illegal dog inside a restaurant.  And yes, it's already illegal to have a non-service animal inside a restaurant, as well as in grocery stores.  Patios are a different story, it's common and perfectly acceptable here to have them on patios, and many places specifically welcome them with bowls, leash ties, and the like.

We saw what was possibly such a case just last night in a nice restaurant. As we were leaving, we noticed a small dog with a family in the entry, in a purse or bag. My wife said, "Oh, a dog", and the dad was quick to say, "he's a service dog". Maybe a so-called emotional dog.... But, not knowing the situation, it didn't seem plausible to us. It just seems to be an expanding thing, where disrespectful and dishonest people claim service dogs to take them anywhere. I think hardware stores are okay, but certainly not most other retail establishments. What the owners may not understand is, you may open your doors to dogs and other pets, but in doing so, you'll lose my business. It's their choice. I think it's great that people enjoy dogs and pets, but by the same token, I should have the freedom to not like those same pets. I just strongly prefer to not have them in my personal space. It's called freedom. Respect and consideration for others is still a good thing, in my opinion.

    As FL-JOE said,

"I just don't want it to get to the point that every time I go to a restaurant half the people in there have their dogs sitting with them.  If I wanted that sort of a dinning experience I would move to a third world country."

Long before it gets to that point, I'll just quit going out. There's always Amazon, etc.

I have used the Freightliner dealer in Florence SC but not sure where the nearest Volvo dealer is if you need one of them. I should be back in SC on Tuesday after the Memorial Day weekend if you need any assistance.

    Dave

There's an app for that..at least for Android. Don't know if they have one for Apple, but it says the Volvo dealer in Florence is the Florence Truck Center. Jay

I also read (here, I think) at least one person uses a large pair of channel lock pliers to tighten the cap.  I think this would be enough in most cases, but maybe not if the truck was stolen or left unattended at a truck stop.  Just thinking "out loud" don't take my word for it. 😁

Nothing will stop the determined thief. Someone took a chisel and hammer to my locked cap to get in and remove my fuel. Apparently, no-one noticed or cared. Still, I imagine the locked cap turns away the casual opportunist, since that's only happened once since I've had locked caps. Jay

Dave, OK, it's a fair comment.... my remarks were in relation to using a heavy duty truck to pull a 40 foot 5th wheel.... I've seen many dually diesel pickups easily do that.   Also, the remarks about me being naive and ignorant of the length of RVs in National Parks did not go unnoticed......I don't appreciate people making comments like that or misleading people thinking that a 40 foot 5th wheel with a big Mack or Peterbuilt can just pull in easily to any park....they can't....

No, you've seen duallys PULL a forty foot fifth wheel. Just because they're doing it doesn't make it EASY.. Or even SMART.. Safety is actually important to many of us. Saying that a forty foot fifth wheel with Mack attached can't pull into a park isn't at all true either. They can pull into any place the owner desires to. Just talk to some of them instead of making unfounded accusations.  Jay

Newmar outfitted their big fifth wheel trailers with tandem wheels.  They had eight tires on two axles.  They were very well built trailers that weighed north of 20k pounds.

The substantial over engineering and ample tire/wheel/axle capacity is what attracted us to the Newmar fiver. Jay

Lance, Whoever told you that you would be able to work on the Volvo in a month is dreaming. I have had 2 replacements and it was closer to 4-6 months if not longer. You will need PT for up to 2 months and then you are still not 100%. If you had a partial knee replacement that goes faster but not 1 month.

I do think it's a different experience for each individual. My wife had full replacements and was up and running, so to speak, within a month after each surgery. YMMV Jay

Thanks again for that link.  Dry weight is well within the max trailer weight even with the 20% margin.  This TT has a cargo capacity almost equal to its dry weight, be we are never going to put 3,300 lbs of stuff in it...this is a weekender.  Maybe a week at most.  We've got 1,400 lbs before we hit the max with the 20% margin.  We're talking a few pots and pans and paper plates, food, bedding, a change of clothes and fishing poles.  I think we're good.

Of course, we'd get a weight distributing hitch.  Not from the dealer though.  The only one they sell is $800.  I'm sure it's awesome...but geeze!

Anyone care to chime in with a recommendation for a good hitch for a small trailer - it won't be exceeding 5,000 lbs I'm 100% sure, and about 23 feet long?  I want a good one, but not necessarily one that costs that much!

Etrailer has pretty much any hitch you'll need and is a wealth of towing information and how to videos.

Kirk's mention of weight should be an alert......to do more research on exactly what generator you really want / need.

(IMO)  the generator you mention is "overkill' for your needs - - also, *if* you continue with that model - where will you carry it?

Also consider noise levels. You may have lots of power available - but prohibited from using it during certain hours.

Suggest you do LOTS more investigation of your generator "options" before you make a purchase.  The  *Tech Issues* forum on RV Net has "everything generator", and may be another good source of/for information..

    .

Overkill? In my experience, there is no such thing as too much power, whether its a genset or a tow vehicle. Often one finds themselves with not enough power, but I can't ever remember complaining about too much power.

Re: noise levels.. The Honda EU line is the worldwide class leader in noise levels and reliability, with the 7000 specifically at 53 (eco) and 58 (full) db.

  12. Those bridges toll both ways. You may consider getting E-ZPass, as many toll roads are going all electronic. You can save a bit on the fee and save a LOT of time and aggravation. Plus, E-ZPass currently works in 17 states. I would imagine others will be part of the network in the future. MUCH easier to auto pay online than to watch the mail for a notice. Jay

Retirement isn't about money, it will however mimic the amount of satisfaction you sowed working.

Well put,  RV_.. Thanks for your insight. A wise man once said, (and I apologize for butchering it) do something you love to do, find a way to get paid for it and you'll never work a day in your life. Another one... No-one ever said on their deathbed, I wish I'd spent more time in the office.... I may not be financially wealthy, but my wealth of memories are immeasurable. We too had amazing adventures as a family, just perhaps not on your scale. Our most unique was working our way to a small mining town called Lynne Lake, Manitoba for NASA on the longest day of the year. When you get to the last chapters of life, you really can't change the choices you made earlier. It's important to make the best choices up front to minimize regret later. But most of all, it's vital to not lose sight of what's really important in life as you chase the almighty dollar. Jay

Aside from ego issues it's not about money. No one regrets what they've done, only what they did not do, but always wanted to do. Don't tell yourself why you can't, but instead how you can!

Not everyone is sitting around breathlessly waiting to retire. For some of us, life is not about money, it's about quality of life. As I approach seventy, I'd LIKE to retire, if it becomes financially feasible to do so. However, I spent a LOT of time in my youth with my wife and little kids, plus doing volunteer activities with my wife, knowing my kids would be grown and doing their own thing at this point in my life. So, I intentionally planned to work more now, rather than when my kids were young. I enjoy my work, just as I'll enjoy my retirement, but I'll NEVER regret my choice to put family ahead of finances. That's the beauty of this great country, everyone gets to choose their own path. Jay

  15. The question is, is it running continuously at idle, or at all times? My N14 is set to run all the time at idle when the a.c. is on, but as soon as you move you can hear it cycle normally. If the fan is hard to turn by hand with the engine off, that's normal, as they're normally on, and you're likely dragging it against the clutch. On mine, I can check it by turning the key on. That applies air and releases the clutch, telling me the system is working properly. Good luck, Jay
