Any problems taking the southern route

There is a steakhouse south of El Paso, http://www.cattlemanssteakhouse.com/, where you can boondock overnight behind a fence if you have dinner there.

Cattlemans Steakhouse is an excellent place to stop and spend the night. Not only do they have excellent food, but when overnighting the compound is locked and there is a security guard on duty all night. If you need to leave early he will open the gates for you. You may have to use a little imaginative leveling technique.

Last year we took rt 90 out of San Antonio to Del Rio, then onto Marathon, Very nice Motel/Rv park there Passport America was around $15.00/night. Nightime train though is across the street. from Marathon, up to I10 and a stop at Demming, More trains there. Never felt any danger and minimal traffic.

Good luck and safe travels

We actually prefer the US-90 route over I-10...a much more interesting drive, IMO. It'll put you back on I-10 at Van Horn.

The same here I-10 is so boring compared to US Hwy.90. The route is very close to Mexico; never had a problem. At the Pecos bridge overlook you can see Mexico but is not a problem because of the river, lake and the high cliffs.

If you go the 90 route be sure to stop at the Prada store outside of Marfa. They have some good deals there.

I like the Hwy 90 route through this area too and boondock often at a rest area between Brackettville and Uvalde. However I have one caution, you will likely run into inspection stations along the route checking for illegals. They have dogs, and are checking for drugs, so just be sure you aren't holding - not that anyone here would... I'm just saying.

Hwy 90 is what I was referring to in my earlier post. This will be our third winter volunteering at Seminole Canyon State Park, 40 miles west of Del Rio.

Come on down for a tour of the ancient rock art. No problems with border issues here. The only thing you see more of than buzzards are Border Patrol!

Take the Loop 375 around to 54 and turn right (north). Go about a mile and take the exit and use 213 north to 404. Turn left on 404 which takes you back to IH10 at Anthony. No mountain to cross.

That's the route we take now too. We used to take the mountain pass which is pretty but a tough climb and descent. Does anyone know if the final piece of 375 where it meets 54 is finished yet? The construction has made a nightmare of it for the past few years.

It's not the truck and trailer, Jack. It's my wife following along behind in the Lexus without a jake to hold her speed down.

We have stayed at the Sunland Casino & Racetrack several times, south of I 10. It's right on the Rio Grande and as 50 amp

hookups for $6. Never a problem. Security patrols the lot.

We also stay at Sunland every year. Just drove I 10 a couple of weeks ago from Calif to Florida. Road was good except for a short time it was rougher than the rest. Can't remember even where it was as it wasn't that bad to be concerned about.

Btw, El Paso was judged the safest large city in the US for 3 straight years.

Don't believe the posts. Google it and see for yourself. Its one of our favorite cities to visit.

  • 3 weeks later...

There is a steakhouse south of El Paso, http://www.cattlemanssteakhouse.com/, where you can boondock overnight behind a fence if you have dinner there.

We just stayed at the Cattlemens last night and it was great! Great steak (had to get the 24oz. Cowboy porterhouse) and they pulled right up in the big back lot...even for our rig it was no issue.

It is about 5 miles off the I10 but was easy to get to.

A must stop over.

I can now answer my own question. It is completed. The only issue is still the junction of 375 and I-10 east of town. It is still under construction and it is easy to miss the turnoff.

I agree that it is a great place. Unfortunately the night we were there the RV area was full. They let up park along the wall outside the gate. Great food.
