Super singles on two axle tractor

Exile

Recommended Posts

Coming home on I-10 this afternoon and Was surprised to see a two axle short haul tractor pulling doubles with super singles on it. It was a Volvo D13 with a short wheelbase.

I figure that would be a disaster with a blowout. I sure wouldn't want to be next to it when it happened.

Seems someone said on here that Volvo did not recommend them on a two axle tractor.

Both the truck and the tire manufacturers are fine with wide base tires on single axle truck tractors, provided that said tractor has a stability control system installed. They're not recommended without it.

Jack (I think) said Volvo would only spec them if the truck has stability control. There are several companies that I know of, AAA Cooper being one of them, that use 2 axle tractors to pull single axle trailers and AAA Cooper is using brand new Volvos with SS tires on truck and trailer. A 3 axle combination with only 6 tires.

Super singles and pulling doubles doesn't sound like fun to me. Often the tractors are not carrying much weight and I have had tractors with duels easily hydroplane in light rain. Singles would surely be worse. Snow, forget it.

Randy, I tend to agree with you. On our applications we have enough trouble with traction already on singled or tandem trucks. Because of our lighter weights. Super singles have got to make that worse. But they sure do look killer. Too me, anyway :)
