Why can't I get Windows 11 22H2 yet?

I don't mind waiting after reading this!

Excerpt:

"Microsoft made its latest feature update rollup, Windows 11 22H2, available to "seekers" on Sept. 20, two weeks ago today. Yet a number of customers who proactively have tried to download the update have found no joy.

ased on its own telemetry data, Microsoft puts "safeguard holds" on certain PC configurations when new feature updates are released in order to try to prevent users from encountering known issues.

Microsoft has disclosed a few of the possible Windows 11 22H2 blockers, but customers have been unearthing more on their own.

Microsoft has published on its Windows 11 22H2 Release Health Information page a handful of the known issues that may be preventing users from getting this update.

Four are listed as of Oct. 4:

  • Some installed printers might only allow default settings
  • Compatibility issues with Intel Smart Sound Technology drivers and Windows 11
  • Copying files/shortcuts using Group Policy Preferences might not work as expected
  • KB5012170 might fail to install and you might receive a 0x800f0922 error (Security update for Secure Boot DBX might fail to install)

Microsoft has posted a workaround on the printer issue and says it is working on a resolution, which the company will provide via an update in an upcoming release. Officials recommend that users affected by the printer hold "do not attempt to manually upgrade using the Update now button or the Media Creation Tool until this issue has been resolved and the safeguard removed."

The company also has published a workaround for the Group Policy Preferences issue and has committed to providing an update for this in an upcoming release. It is investigating the Secure Boot DBX problem and is advising customers not to attempt to manually update if they are encountering the Intel Smart Sound driver issue in cases where there is no updated driver available from PC makers.

Adam Gross, a Microsoft Most Valuable Professional (MVP) and consultant known for publishing the FU.WhyAmIBlocked script, also discovered recently that DeviceGuard and certain processors in combination can result in a Windows 11 22H2 block. The hold reports that "Secure Launch data not migrated on IceLake (Client), TigerLake, AlderLake devices."

Gary Blok, a workplace engineer with expertise in Endpoint management, ConfigMgr, and Intune, posted on his blog about the Secure Launch data not migrated issue. He said he has found that users who want to get Windows 11 22H2 "need to disable System Guard, both set it to disabled and ensure it's not running. I've heard people having issues having it disable, even if they set it to disable."

I asked Microsoft about the DeviceGuard block and was told by a spokesperson that Microsoft is aware of the issue and working to address it. The spokesperson didn't provide a time frame for when this issue may be resolved.

Blok posted that he is working to build out a crowdsourced safeguard hold database to help IT pros to more easily find and look up the holds that are placed on their systems when new Windows updates are available. The database is builds on Gross' FU.WhyAmIBlocked Powershell module. He said he already has 100 safeguard hold IDs and information.

Safeguard holds aren't the only worry for Windows users moving to a new update. On Oct. 3, Microsoft officials acknowledged that Windows 11 22H2 users who are trying to copy large, multi-GB files may see a noticeable slowdown in terms of performance. Users may see as much as 40 percent less throughput over SMB when copying down (reading). There is a workaround for the issue but no word yet on when a permanent solution may be available.

Update (October 6): Microsoft has added another known issue that it's investigating to its Windows 11 22H2 to its Release Health information page as of October 5. Microsoft is warning that the use of provisioning packages on Windows 11 22H2 might result in errors, leaving Windows only partially configured. The Out of Box Experience might not finish or might restart unexpectedly, officials said. Provisioning packages are .PPKG files used to help configure new devices on business or school networks. Those using Windows Autopilot, as well as devices used by consumers in their homes or small offices are not likely to encounter this issue, they said.

Microsoft's suggested workaround for this is for users to provision their devices before upgrading to Windows 11 22H2. Microsoft will provide a fix for this "in an upcoming release," officials said."

We have to print a form out this week, so we will see if either of our main laptops running 22H2 have a problem.  We don't print often.

Bill do let us know. I am going to avoid Windows 11 on our 5 Win 10 systems we are keeping but are eligible for 11 until the all clear is sounded for the Windows 11's minor niggles.

If you remember I loved 11 when I first upgraded this system to it. Then a month or two down the road it slowed to a crawl and started crashing regularly. I took the actions outlined earlier and solved it an love this system again. I am going to start checking on the new 4k AIO user feedback and reviews before I decide to actually get one and sell this one.

I don't remember these kinds of issues with 7/8/8.1q/and 10. I do like 10 and can load it on this one as Lenovo did send me a USB flash drive with it and all the drivers needed to run it back on here.

all the computers we are keeping can be upgraded to 11 now. The Surface Pro 7+, our two Go2 M3 CPU systems, and the Optiplex 5080 and Lynn's Dell Inspiron 7790 AIO 10th Gen i5-10210U processor 1.60GHz – 4.20GHz quad core 8 threads, and my backup system the Dell 5080 Optiplex Micro i5-10500T 6 core 12 threads, all are Windows 11 upgradeable.

The ones we are selling:The Surface Pro 7 i7 is being sold but can be upgraded to 11.

Neither my old favorite Dell 2720 AIO QHD touchscreen and the HP G1 mini i5 quad core i5 and Intel SSD with 16GB RAM  are eligible for 11 as of now.

So no upgrades to 11 on any of them and I may be buying one that comes native with 11 just for the neat swivel 4k touchscreen.

I had time so I updated my 13" laptop to 22H2 and it all went well.  My wife and I also printed with our 15" laptops running 22H2 and had no problems, so we did not have the printer problems that some updating to 22H2 have had.  Next time Diane runs her 13" laptop she will see if it updates to 22H2 and that is all the Windows 11 computers we have.  All our others are older laptops either running Linux or Windows 10, since they can't run Windows 11.

If you decide to upgrade, be sure to do a full backup first.  After my laptop upgraded to Win 11 22H2 I discovered that several of my programs were deleted and all of my desktop customization was reset.  I am seriously considering rolling back to Win 10.  I do most of my computing on Linux but wanted to try Win 11 so I could be competent to support  my neighbors who use that OS.

Roger that was my original intent when this machine started with the desktop display crashing it. Although fixed I still have the Windows 10 restore USB flash drive from Lenovo to bring it back to 10.

So whenever I do pick up the new 4k 27" AIO touchscreen i7, 32GB Ram and 1TB m.2 NVMe drive and 2TB 2.5" WD Blue SSD as the storage drive. I have the 4TB WD Elements desktop external HDD to handle backup for it and 1TB external HDDs in external USB 3.2 cases for the other systems have 1TB SSDs but not much on them as my wife does little on hers and mu backup computer desktop is a 10th gen 6 core i5/1TB WD Black SN770 M.2 NVMe with 32GB DDR4 3200 RAM It is fast but only has about 500GB used on it. External HDDs are too slow anyway so will be deciding on how I wan to do those later.

The 4k AIO is Windows 11 Native and is not upgraded from 10 so may be better at a lot of things than the one I am on now. It's fast and great QHD pic but that 4k touchscreen 27" grabbed me.

We updated two Dell laptops to 22H2 without any problems at all.  No different than any other Windows update.  Both machines did have recommended BIOS updates roughly concurrent with 22H2.  I don't know if the BIOS update was in any way related.
