Mixing duals and super-singles

As you've mentioned, many pros and cons for each side.  One consideration is if you choose to remain tandem, having that additional safety factor allows a bit of peace of mind should you choose to run your tires longer, say 10 years or more.  Light loads and redundancy are in our favor.

While I like the look of singled long, over loading the front axle can be a big issue, as has been pointed out before.  Also, rather than just dropping the front driver, look around ans see if you can find a proper 23k axle to swap out, selling/trading the tandem set you now have.  This will give you properly sized input shaft/yoke/bearings and make the driveshaft change easier too.
