Some dogs who are not used to going when on a lead will have problems. Or, if they've always gone on grass, and you're trying to get them to go on dirt or gravel, you may also have a problem.

Get the dog hooked up and take him/her for a LONG walk. Eventually, they'll let it go. Have some treats along to give him/her along with lavish praise.

Best advice. Just walk and walk and walk. It will happen.

One trick that works very well we picked up from our vet. Add a heaping tablespoon of plain, cooked, canned pumpkin to their meal. Not pumpkin pie mix, just plain pumpkin. Something about it will stop a dog that has diarrhea from going and will help a dog that is stopped up to start going. Either way, your dog WILL go within a day of eating it. It will also help them if they aren't drinking enough water and trying to get rocks out. Ours now get a daily dose in the evening meal and look forward to licking the bowl.
