telcoman
I am currently leading an RV caravan throguh Mexico. Last night in Michoacan, we had dinner with 4 mexican cops. These guys had earlier escorted us through a tight small town, clearing away parked vehicles for us so we could get our rigs through. They later showed up with the local director of tourism, and we all had dinner. They were really a great bunch of guys. one of the most unique experiences I have had in 8 years of spending winters down here. My sister (below) loves guys in uniform. dartmouth01
How did they clear parked cars? Towed them? Rammed them with their vehicles? Inquiring minds......

beyerjf
I would feel pretty safe with that much firepower around me.
kountryguy1
I would prefer not needing all that firepower!
JC and Angie
Rather have the fire power and not need than the other way around. Basic rule to live by.!!!!!!

reed and elaine
We and others have had excellent experience with police in Yucatan, not so much so in Tampico. Federal Police are quite polite. We were stopped twice within the first two hours on our first trip to Yucatan. Just wanted to make sure we had Temporary Import License paperwork, drivers' licenses, and insurance. Then "bien viaje and please enjoy our wonderful country!" Remember, if you hear someone yell "Duck!", do not stand up to determine if it is a Blue-winged Teal or a Merganser. Reed and Elaine

Pappy Yokum
Where in that article that you quoted does it state that this was in a campground? A news story that grows "legs".....in the eyes of the beholders... It's on these forums (and others) as "Texas Campers Killed", etc. Has nothing to do with a "campground". The decedants were "camping" on private property - the "camp site".. It could be called "boondocking" - - or even pitching a tent in your front yard. But - they were "camping" - - sooooo...... the sky is falling!. RIP - campers. .
telcoman
I think the point I am tryign to make is do not asume you are safe just because you are in the US or Canada. Every time i am in the SW on my way south I have people come to me and make comments like better take your gun. Very ignorant comment. I have spent 6 months a year for the last 8 years in Mexico and never had, not seen an incident and we travel through some very remote areas. If people want to harm you down here they seem to have to have a reason, (namely if you are involved with drugs) not just start killing strangers at random. I actually feel safer here. justRich
The Mexican cops all seem to have automatic rifles. We were having breakfast in La Penita when two cops came in and sat at a table across from us. One cop stood his weapon up, butt first on the floor. The other laid his weapon across his lap. The barrel pointed at me. (Uh, honey, could you scoot over a little?)
OPOSSUM
Two Australian surfers visiting Mexico were killed last sometime in the last couple of weeks. Were travelling in a converted van.
telcoman
Yep so were 16 people in San Bernardino and 10 in Roseberg in the last couple of months. In fact there is an average of a one mass shooting per day in the US of 4 or more people. Couple of eyars back, a Qubec man was shot & killed in a Florida Campground, but most have no fear of going to Florida as a result.. One has to keep things in perspective. The 2 aussies were traveling around boondocking up remote roads and also traveling at nigh, apparently. Not advisable anywhere you do not know the territory. One reason I do not boondock in my RV in New Orleans, SE LA, or Detroit, or Surrey, BC. http://www.theguardian.com/us-news/ng-interactive/2015/oct/02/mass-shootings-america-gun-violence The world is a dangerous place, USA & Mexico included, I did not work all my life to get my thrills sitting safe at home watching NatGeo.
