Just got it back from the shop.  Took them maybe 1.5 hours, while I wait.  I love that.

Bill says " remove/install new abs valve"  and "brake air valve."

I  don't have air brakes.  Oh well, she's holding air nicely, cab bags stay up.  Not leak-free, but at least now it takes 24 hours to lose 75 pounds instead of 3.

That's awesome! Glad it worked out.

Emphasis added. My fan is air to cool, N 14 Cummins.

That's different than I've seen and my N14 isn't like that. Hmm, learn something new every day. I replace my fan clutch and/or solenoid pretty much as soon as they quit, because the noise and reduced fuel economy drive me nuts. Jay

My rear suspension never goes down, even with the gauge at zero.  The cab air bags do. My air hitch never goes down. Air seat never goes down.

So as Jay said above, it's the fan clutch that uses air? I'll have to look at that.. seems odd to me.

In my particular case, so far I'm seeing that my worst case would be listening to a non-stop warning alarm... unless I'm missing something about the engine being derated if the air isn't up to at least 100.

The fan clutch only uses air to disconnect. Default without air is always on, but that's based on the Class 8 trucks I'm familiar with. I'm not familiar with your truck, but I can't imagine it's much different. Jay

He wants to go 80 miles, to go camping. With an air leak. Multiple air leaks, I'd guess. One to one and a half minute cycle time is excessive. Hard on the compressor, if nothing else. Get much more leakage, you'll lose suspension (rear axle, cab, and seats) engine cooling, and anything else air related. Get it fixed, first. Lose the rear air suspension and limp any distance? Time to look into new driveshaft u-joints. Air bags don;t like being bounced on with no pressure, so might need to replace those. The suspension stop blocks aren't meant to drive on, either. Get it fixed, first.

Okay, just my personal experience here. My Volvo has 1.9 m. miles on it. It has the original u-joints. The compressor had 1.8 m. miles when I replaced it and it was still working okay. The engine won't stop cooling without air, the fan clutch just won't disengage. Air bags rot from uv rays before they're at risk of failure. I'm this week replacing my second set because they're getting too rotten for my taste. I've certainly driven 80 miles or more with air issues to get to a shop, or home to fix it myself. But, everyone has to live within their own comfort level. I'm definitely less paranoid about things than I was thirty years ago. So, to answer the question, in a private truck I would probably consider going camping. Jay

Compressor cycles about every minute to 90 seconds.  I do not have air  brakes.

Without brakes in the equation, I'm not seeing the problem?? There's no longer a critical safety issue at risk, or at least the possibility of the service air going low enough to activate the spring brakes. So, the question is, what exactly does the air compressor need to operate and are they critical systems? Jay

True, but would you let someone you have never seen before drive away in your RV for a cheap price? And are you aware that your RV insurance most likely will not pay if the RV is damaged while it is rented? Commercial insurance is much higher priced than what most of us pay, which is a significant part of the reason rental rates are as high as they are.

I'm not interested in doing any of those things, but the OP is/was. You might address those to the OP. I was just responding and observing. My point often is that posting online is fraught with potholes and minefields. Others feel free to interpret in any way they choose and respond accordingly. It's not always a smooth and straight path. Jay

The following comes from this site:  https://www.medicare.gov/supplements-other-insurance/how-to-compare-medigap-policies

"Plans F and G also offer a high-deductible plan in some states. With this option, you must pay for Medicare-covered costs (coinsurance, copayments, and deductibles) up to the deductible amount of $2,340 in 2020 before your policy pays anything. (Plans C and F aren't available to people who are newly eligible for Medicare on or after January 1, 2020.)"

I think my concept of high deductible must be somewhat different.. That doesn't strike me as terribly high. For most of my life, my health insurance deductible was $10,000... Jay

Our Federal rules governing payments for Medicare Supplements are the same, regardless of the the price charged for a Supplement.

I'm still amazed that many of the "name-brand" insurer's charge, and get, 2 to 3 times the lower price suppliers.  Theoretically, there could be more financial risk for a lower priced supplier.  But if they fold, you have a government guaranteed free pass to shop for another supplier without underwriting.  And I suspect, but have not confirmed, that if a Supplement supplier fails, the process would be similar to that for a failed bank - keep the consumer whole.

Very true that the Federal formulas for Medicare are universal. However, I find it interesting that you suggest the major players are charging 2-3 times as much for Supplements as some. That would suggest to me that my research has been casual and cursory. My impression several years ago when I did this was that Supplements in general were out of my price range. Did you find yours through the Medicare search tool, or with another method? And what exactly is a high deductible Supplement? I thought the entire point of a Supplement was to avoid deductibles.. Hmmm.... Jay

    Jay,

    Good for you and her.

I'm single and have been insured with a High Deductible Medicare Supplement policy for 6 years.  My total cost for the Supplement policies over that time period has been $3500.  I've never received any reimbursement, nor did I expect to.  Fortunately, I'm still very healthy - no medical conditions and no need for any medications.  I chose a path which would not be constrained by my insurer's network of hospitals and doctors.  To me, my choice was to go with catastrophic health insurance without the risk of out of network charges.

I've paid home owners insurance for over 40 years and haven't received any reimbursements.  And, I paid off my mortgage 10 years ago. but still kept paying the insurance.  Insurance is a waste of money, until you become responsible for costs that are a substantial portion of your net worth.

I'm happy with my choice and you seem to be happy with yours too.

I hope it remains that way for both of us.

And that's the beauty of life, that we have choices. I've looked at supplements, but after running the numbers and running "what if" scenarios, I've always chosen an alternative. Perhaps the Supplements I've researched are simply more expensive than other locations or applicants, I don't know. I'm glad we both have choices that work for us. Jay

For a point of reference on why people buy the supplements, Dave had quad-bypass in March.   Hospital bill (not doctors, etc) was  well north of $300K.   Our supplement covered what Medicare didn't.      Still have a few bills trickling in (often a resubmitted bill that was denied because code wasn't correct), but 20% of that would have been devastating.   Most years we could easily go without a supplement, and then you get hit!

If you're just referring to the hospital bill, Medicare covers all but $1408.00 for the first 60 days. The 20% is not relevant in this case. The 20% copay does not apply to the Part A hospital bills, only to Part B, doctors, etc. Jay

You misunderstand what these supplements are.  They're not like vitamins, they are an additional form of financial insurance. Medicare only provides partial insurance.  If you get really sick, like cancer, all of you savings can be wiped out.  A Medicare Supplement starts paying when Medicare stops.  So Medicare + a Supplement pays more of your medical expenses.

For a point of reference, I messed up my Medicare Advantage Plan application several years ago, so my wife was on straight Medicare that year. She was in the ICU for 8 weeks. The bill was $1.4 m., but my total copay was less than $7,000. Not exactly devastating, at least for me. Since it seems popular to conflate the hospital and doctor bills, I guess you could say my copay was 0.5%. I was actually excited to see those bills. I expected much more, based on all the chatter about the alternatives. Jay

Obviously, if you used a funnel and have a brain, you would have to proceed slowly and cautiously.. But the larger picture here is the level of viciousness and rancor in a personal attack, which is likely why so many potential members and contributors are gone in five minutes. Not everyone has skin that thick. I should know better than to post to this crowd. Mea culpa. Jay

  13. We're finally approaching a point where we can update the look of our old Volvo, but given the current climate, we're not going anywhere anytime soon. Any exceptional experiences with paint shops in FL or the general southeast? I don't want any graphics, just a superb paint job. TIA, Jay

After poking around on what's available for slide scanning,  I agree.   Frustrating, but IMO, it's time to move on.  I too trashed all my floppies and zipdrives and my first computer (an Apple II).

This seems to be a reasonable possibility (I have no personal experience with it).  And you may be able to sell it for 30-50% of your cost (assuming it is still working after scanning 3000 slides).

    https://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B00O46B7TY/ezvid02-20

P.S. I don't usually buy product insurance policies.  But if I were in your shoes, I might consider the $22 one for the linked product.  Your needed volume of slides is probably much higher than their average customer.  Assuming the terms do not exempt your protection for "excessive" usage, it may be a reasonable hedge.

The one linked to at Amazon doesn't give any resolution or color depth specs, pretty much confirming that it's barely more than a toy. It may be just fine for some, but personally I would want the best scans possible of all my film images. It's a lot of work to scan thousands of slides or negatives, so you may as well get the best results available for the time invested. Good luck with whatever you decide. Jay

For some reason, there are a few people on these forums who want to argue about everything related to COVID19 and they seem to divert every thread possible in that direction. I was quite surprised that this one got as far as it did before that happened. At least the regular contributors who are guilty of starting that seemed to stay out this time but INDEPENDENT LADY appears to have returned just for that purpose. I remember her from a couple of years ago when she joined the forums to ask about becoming a fulltimer with no previous RV experience. She fought anyone who disagreed with her plans and eventually announced in anger that she was leaving the forums. Aren't we surprised that she wasn't happy on the road?

    Or that she's single??

What is going on here? I posted this thread two months ago for RVers to sign a petition to keep campgrounds open. Especially for us full timers and workers who live on the road to follow the work. Seemed to be going smoothly until the last couple of days. Just trying to understand the friction that some people are causing. This thread was intended to help us RVers and make sure that we had a place to stay, plane and simple. And this was the best place to post it as Escapees looks out for our rights as RVers. Am I missing something?

It only takes one... I would just disengage. Just like most social media, I don't think anyone is going to change anyone's mind. It HAS been illuminating... And humorous. Jay

Thanks Jay for the explanation...so a non tsd participant and non tsd driver are one and the same then? Guess he was just meaning the distinction between someone who works for TSD and someone who doesnt?

I think so.. Often the devil is in the details and it can be challenging to convey complete thoughts via a sentence online. I know sometimes I look at what I've written and wonder what I was thinking?! Jay

How would tsd collect a fee from a non tsd participant? And how would a non tsd driver continue to reap a benefit?

A TSD driver means an employed driver who drives for TSD. He/she drives a company truck and fuels with company fuel. A non TSD driver means someone not affiliated with TSD, such as an RVer, who signs up for their discount fuel card program.

Yes,  many states have such programs.

My question is:  does anyone here have experience with FL online courses (see link) and if so, do they have recommendations for FL online courses?

I am especially interested in online courses that can be completed prior to my arrival in FL (hence do not require a current FL DL) and which provide the certificate online, not via snail mail.

If you look at the pages linked, they're kinda self explanatory..

Either the post office is a government service or it isn't. If the government no longer want to take responsibility, why are they allowed to interfere with it's operation?

    Linda

Because they're a GSE - government supported entity. In theory, they're independent, just like Amtrak and others. Neither is profitable, but there is considered to be a need for both. The question is always about the struggle to find a balance that's somewhat palatable to a reasonable number of constituents and politicians. Jay
