Understood, but an installation in a truck is going to be quite a bit different from an RV.  If it's in this forum, is it understood it's about a truck?

I have an installation in both truck and fiver. For me, the electrical design and install are essentially the same, but of course the physical details will be different.

"is it understood it's about a truck?" I would say the usual "maybe". In watching this, or any forum, the threads often drift far, far afield. That's completely okay with me, but I can see where not everyone cares for that.

In the interest of derailing even further, but bringing the HDT angle in.....Our truck batteries are 7 years old, and sometimes after sitting for a couple months, the truck cranks slowly.  No maintainer or charger of any kind is used.

So, if I determine these batteries have neared the end of their tenure here, should I consider flooded lead acid, AGM, or is there a better solution?

And I know, a solar charger would likely get me another year or two out of them, but at what price?

Personally, I wouldn't get all fancy with this. I would run down to your local Volvo, etc. dealer and just pick up another set. The low price of that option makes the other options look really unattractive. Jay

I do. Possibly more good info could be gained if this were in the Technical section,, where it's much more likely people who know about this are browsing.

To elaborate, I don't peruse this forum via any of the separate categories. I have all recent posts showing when I'm back here to look around. That way, I see what's happening in all categories. I usually forget to even check which category a post is in. Jay

Yeah, that's what I was asking.  Unless this is for an HDT, it surely isn't an HDT topic.

Maybe not directly, but we use these battery banks in our HDTs, as well. I have 500+ AHs in mine and am planning lithium at the end of this set. Not to stir the pot, but I would venture to guess many HDTers have similar projects and interests. Besides, I personally don't really care what department it's in. Good info is good info. Jay

I like your setup.  It sounds like it fits your use.  I just ordered 16 200 amp hr cells and we have 2,000 watts of solar.  I installed a 18 cu ft residential refrigerator last winter when our RV fridge quit.  I was pleasantly surprised to see it only uses about a thousand watt hours a day.  Right now we have 6 golf cart batteries but I wanted more capacity.  The solar kept up with our mini split during the day and easily charged the batteries but by morning our batteries would be 50% soc  or less  if we weren't careful.  Looking around yesterday I found Aliexpress had a special on the 16 new grade A cells for $1437.  That seemed like a good price so I bought it.  Hopefully that will meet our storage needs.

A link to the batteries you chose? Thanks, Jay

Curious about shunts. Aside from different amperage ratings is there any difference between shunts from different battery monitor companies? Can I use a shunt from manufacturer 'A' with a digital display from manufacturer 'B'?

One only needs to know the resistance of both shunts to know if they're interchangeable. The system simply measures the voltage drop across the known resistance to calculate the amperage. If the two shunts are of different resistances, you'll get an inaccurate interpretation of that data. Jay

King, we have had queens and didn't like them.

And we don't like kings. It's a personal preference and one that - I think - is more related to the sizes of the occupants. My wife and I are quite small and prefer the queen, but I would think larger occupants would need more room. Jay

O.K. I know some of you are thinking why is he talking about a series on Netflix about Chess?

    Well this is why.......

My background is in Science. I have a Master's Degree in Molecular Biology. I know how to use the scientific method.

If you look at what we do with our semi's it is a lot of:

    1. Observation of a problem or issue the truck is having

    2. Hypothesis ( a testable statement)

    3. Experiment -  Repair or attempt at fixing the issue

    4. Outcome - Does experiment or repair A lead to B or C or D or possibly done.

    5. Solution, if all goes well.

    6. Conclusion - I will make sure next time before I leave the garage / storage unit / yard before I go on that trip I will do the following or check the following........

The above follows how I teach the scientific method to high school students.

Same in the movie about Chess. You could always see the wheels turning in the Chess Grand Masters head. - Observation / Problem / Solution......

If you watch the movie you will see the same personality types on there, that you see on the forum. The people who watch what is going on, the guys who are truly gifted at what they do, the guys who give great advice and inspire us to do more to our trucks along with the others.

So it you get a chance watch the series on Netflix "Queens Gambit." The series is based on a book.

Dang, we just finished that series! It's the first thing I've watched in years that I would score a ten. Exceptional! Jay

I did this also, only mine is horizontal with both plugs being sealed.  Still when humidity, temperature are right i still get a little condensation inside.  Been like this for 5 years now.  Looking at ways to mount a cover over the whole thing.

Yes, rather than chasing condensation, I'd prefer to just enclose it in a waterproof enclosure and not worry about it. Also, I still pull a commercial trailer, so it doesn't make sense to have it hanging out there when I'm working. Jay

    Too bad^ .

I ordered trailer tires from one of those non Walmart retailers .

Rec'd them well within the estimated delivery time , without any hassles .

They have lasted almost 3 times longer than what I had before and I saved about 1/3 of the cost .

    Due diligence ( research ) pays . ;)

Good to know! I think my issue is that I go to an online retailer expecting their products and it's frustrating to find all those hundreds of other options, plus the issue of returns and after sale support. I may consider doing more research. Jay

I've used Walmart before, but not in the past year or so. Maybe things have changed, but at the time I got soured when I discovered that much of what they offer is through 3rd-parties with no "global" return policy or "mediation". Walmart doesn't actually fulfill those orders. When my order was over 21 days after I was notified of shipment I tried contacting Walmart and was instructed that I would need to contact the seller directly. I did.. and eventually received my order... which was "wrong"! When trying to return it I was informed by Walmart that they could do nothing and to contact the seller. The seller stated that they have a 14-day return policy and my order had been originally shipped nearly 5 weeks prior. SOL

I'm glad it wasn't a high ticket item, but it seemed to me, then, that Walmart was becoming more of a "poor mans" eBay dressed up to look like an "Amazon".

If it's not a "walmart" product then the sellers set their own shipping and returns policies.

Just checked now and it looks like it's still the same.

"Items purchased from a Marketplace retailer cannot be returned to a Walmart store or to Walmart.com; they must be returned to their Marketplace Retailer in accordance with their returns policy. Please email the Marketplace retailer directly.
Items purchased from dealers or resellers and not Walmart.com directly are not eligible for return, refund, or exchange"

Kirk- Looks like the one you purchased is a "marketplace retailer". JLC Concepts LLC.

I would never purchase from one of those non-Wal-Mart retailers. Sorry you got burned. I just select the Wal-Mart.com retailer option only. What happened to you is exactly what I suspected might happen. That ploy seems to be active on so many once reliable sites. It's sad and unfortunate, but I quickly caught on to them. Jay

You forget, I speak from experience. I've seen a ton of side compartments emptied while the driver says "hang on Deputy, I know the triangles are in here somewhere". As soon as you said "commercial trailer" my whole train of thought changed 😃

Yes, I've seen those as well. At least mine are clean and organized. I can reach in and grab what I need in a moment - at least on the driver's side. The passenger's side is not great, but I'm working on it...and that's where MY triangles are.... Jay

Jay,  I mounted mine a bit differently than most...  I sealed up the top wire grommets with liquid electrical tape (silicone would work too) and it has worked out great.  Not sure if this is something you'd want to do or not, but it's an option.

Yes, thanks. I've seen yours and others like yours. You have a very nice, clean install. I do test setups first to determine how I want my finished product and I've decided on the current layout. I need an enclosure that looks like a well thought out, permanent installation, but it has to be removable for my commercial trailer. Jay

Hmmmm... Thank you for the suggestion. It's plastic... I don't know that I want to go with plastic. Aluminum or steel is likely durable and will more easily withstand the forces of plugging in and unplugging the connectors, plus I need to mount it vertically. I'll have to think about it. Jay

Talk to your local electrical supply house. Ask about weatherproof junction boxes.

ETA: They come in fiberglass, steel, and stainless steel.

Thanks, I've looked at different electrical housings. They tend to be utilitarian, which makes sense, considering their normal application. The ones I've seen online either don't fit size wise, or don't look right, or are really pricy. I haven't actually gone to an electrical supply house, but might after this Covid mess. Jay
