Did he also give an explanation for why it happened?  I live in Knoxville and have always had good service at Worldwide Equipment which is the Volvo dealer.  It’s also near the campground. I hope it was an isolated event.

It was pretty simple, the tech simply didn't torque the brake chamber nuts down properly. Very visible in the pictures. Just a sloppy tech. I thought about going to Volvo, but my experience with them is less than satisfactory and the chamber was leaking enough I didn't want to go that far. Jay

  2. On our way back to FL last summer, I pulled into a campground just north of Knoxville hearing a lot of air loss, with the matching gauge dropping like a rock. In the morning, I went to a nearby local shop, where they quickly changed out my bad brake chamber and we were on our way. Unfortunately, while checking the truck a couple months later, I discovered the new chamber almost falling off and taking the slack adjuster with it. That cost almost $600.00 to correct. I was, of course, not really happy with that level of incompetence and left the shop a rather scathing review. My experience with shops left in the mirror is that they kinda laugh at you and then suggest I bring it in so they can look at it. Long story somewhat shorter, Allen at Performance Truck in Heiskell, TN saw my review, requested and looked over my documentation and fully refunded the almost $600.00 the Volvo shop charged me to fix the mistake. If you're ever near Knoxville and need service, I highly recommend them. No one's perfect, but they truly stand behind their work. Jay

There is a member here who uses his work truck to pull his fifth, cannot remember his handle, he has a red cabover

he would know about weigh stations fuel taxes and logs while on vacation.

only issue is hassle of insurance, logs and registration as a truck, but that would all be part of your business.  Some neighborhoods will allow rvs but not commercial trucks

some campgrounds might not appreciate a commercial truck coming in, but i have no direct knowledge on that part, they might not know or care the difference

I pull both commercial trailers and our fiver, with separate hitches. I've been into campgrounds in multiple states and they never give me a second look. I was initially concerned about that, but not any more. Most are just interested in our setup and don't care about our commercial designation. Jay

    Hi,

Considering a new coach and one of the perks is a free year pass at TT. I received a free 1 year trial with my last RV purchase and went to the TT site to if that was basically a once in a lifetime deal and to check availability of some sites I may venture towards if it works out.

Well it seems there is a $748 balance on my account! Sunday night and cant call but a little concerned. NO emails or correspondence from them since my trial expired Jan 1....

Actually I got one "renew for $100 off" but no mention of a past due....

    Any one ever see this?

    Thanks!

    Balance? or balance due??

Thanks for the replies.  The holes are small.  Probably 1/4".

You could just close up the holes with a couple stainless steel carriage or round head bolts. I would think it would look okay. Jay

  6. I do my own trading, using both trailing stop losses and limit trades. I've done leveraged trades in the morning and traded them a few hours later. However, you can't use those proceeds for a new purchase until it's settled. Since I haven't done that in some years, my memory isn't the best, but I'm quite sure that one trade before settlement is the legal limit. At my brokerage, that's three days. Jay

Anyone pacing and following a semi for miles and miles and miles is suspect.

    Harmless? Think again.

When I hauled 'high value' loads, I was especially aware of anyone tailing me for long distances, and I would use a variety of methods to change the motorists annoying behavior. Cargo theft is real, and professional drivers are very aware of the risks when being followed for long distances, or they should be.

Put yourself in that scenario. Suppose you went to a bank, withdrew $100,000 and headed out on the highway, and a car followed YOU for 150 miles, matching your every move.

Me thinks you would be suspicious, annoyed, maybe worried, and fully justified calling the cops or taking other actions to change the scenario.

Make your OWN travel and driving decisions, don't put that burden on someone else.

    Exactly that.. Jay

I am traveling from San Antonio to the Florida Keys soon and I am looking to stop somewhere along the way that is desolate and that I will be left alone so I can concentrate on a big work project.  I have Verizon and Sprint and hoping one of them would work so I can get work done.  Does anyone know of a place along the way where I can be by myself to get my project done?  Then I can go to the keys with no work on my plate.  Thanks!

San Antonio, TX or San Antonio, FL?

Jay, I did not intend to imply 3-4 stage chargers were not a superior advancement to constant voltage brute force chargers.  But, a vehicle alternator supplies 14-15 volts at whatever current the battery requires at any given time that the alternator can supply.  Therefore, starting batteries like the group 31 referenced are built to withstand this constant higher voltage better than deep cycle batteries (without boiling dry).  Actually, starting batteries that are not allowed to reach 14-15 volts will "sulfate" quickly returning a shorter lifespan.  When not used in a vehicle they need that 4th stage of bulk charging - even 3 stage may not reach a sufficiently high voltage.  Almost 20 years from your boat starting battery?  Wow - I want one of those!

Frankly, I was shocked the last time we went to the lake and it held up for the entire week. I can't believe I didn't check the date on the battery when it died. It did pretty much just live on the charger... After the kids were grown and gone, we only went to the lake (Dale Hollow) for a week every three years or so. So, twenty years is just my (kinda) educated guess. The boat just turned 30 years old, so.. Jay

Follow Jim's advice about golf cart batteries unless you want to switch to AGM or Lithium.  The group 31 may not really be cheaper as suppliers I have bought them from require a group 31 core or pay a very high core charge.  If you are going with a single 12V lead acid battery get a group 27 or 29 deep cycle.  Walmart and Costco both have acceptable products at affordable prices.  Starting batteries are a poor investment since allowing them to drop below 10.5 volts several times typically spells reduced output or an early death.  They really do not perform well with 3 or 4 stage "smart" chargers as their design is for recharge with high current 14 to 15 volt output from a vehicle alternator.
Bottom line....... you won't save any money with a group 31 starting battery.

I agree with pretty much everything here, as there's generally little to no savings going with group 31 vs deep cycles. However, in my experience a good 3 stage charger kept my boat starter battery going for almost 20 years, so... I'm happy with that. The battery died because the charger died in storage. Who knows how much longer I might've got out of that battery? Jay

  11. I'm totally okay with your posting here, but that's just me. Of course, you can just use starting batteries, with the understanding they won't hold up under deep cycle usage. Starting batteries have much thinner plates to generate high amperage for starting use, while deep cycle batteries have thicker plates to withstand deeper cycling use. If your usage is only the top 10% or so, they might last a reasonable time. I'm thinking, for the price, why not try? Worth a shot.. Jay

  12. They're all 5 volts, but more amperage is generally better and allows you to charge more devices faster. Many larger devices, like tablets, may take forever to charge on a small charger, if ever. Plus, there's a wide range of quality. It's helpful to stay with a known brand, like Anker. Jay
