retired campers
This is my first post on my first day as a member. I read the rules. This *isn't* a political post. Admins, please don't interpret it as such. I'm not here to advocate voting for one side or the other. I don't care who you vote for or if you vote at all. That's a personal decision outside the scope of this post and this forum. I am genuinely concerned that SD is not going to be a state open to domiciling in for much longer. I am currently a resident in South Dakota. We are living in a sticks n bricks. In May, our son graduates and our house will go on the market. Once our house sells, we will be FT RVers. We have established an address with a PMB, ironically, before we decided to be full timers because the mail in our neighborhood was always getting misplaced. The full senate agreed and passed SB54, a bill that would tighten residency restrictions for hunting and fishing licenses in the state. The bill passed with 33 in favor and with one excused lawmaker. The bill will go to the appropriate House committee with a do pass from the senate. The bill states that any individual who lives in another state for at least 180 days during a calendar year would lose their ability to qualify as a SD resident. The bill also further defines a domicile as a physical resident. And, a driver's license or ownership of a business would not be main sources of qualifying an individual as a state resident. (info copy/paste from an article in keloland.com). YIKES. Thats just for hunting and fishing rights. SB17 pertains to voting rights. This bill says that a resident must be within the state for at least 30 days in the 365 days immediately prior to submitting the registration form for voting. Also hat tip to keloland.com for the info. Here's what I'd like input on....Is South Dakota making it more difficult for us to claim domicile in SD? What's next? Saying that we can't re register our vehicles or renew our driver's licenses? That, in effect, would eliminate any full timer RVers from claiming SD as a domicile state. I already wrote an email to my representative. No response yet. In his defense, I just sent the email yesterday. Looking forward to your input. Thanks! kb0zke
I got an email this afternoon from our SD mail service asking us to write to our State Senators to vote for the amended SB17 (SB17A). The amended version makes it clear that we DO have the right to vote in SD. Unfortunately, the email also said they could be voting on SB17A today. I immediately sent an email to the Senator that represents our address, but not sure if it got there before the vote, or if it would even be read before the vote.
