Elon Musk says Starship needs work to send SpaceX Starlink 2.0 satellites into orbit

Recommended Posts

Good news in that the Starlink 2.0 satellites will be an order of magnitude better with more data throughput. However, to launch the new heavier sats and get 12,000 or more up in the sky they need a bigger spaceship.

Excerpt:

"Musk boasts the second generation satellites are an 'order of magnitude better' than the first generation of Starlink satellites.

 May 31, 2022

Elon Musk has admitting he is banking on Starship, a launch rocket currently in development, to get SpaceX's next generation Starlink satellites into orbit.

"We need Starship to work and to fly frequently, or Starlink 2.0 will be stuck on the ground," the tech billionaire told YouTube show Everyday Astronaut.

He explained that sending Starlink 2.0 into orbit with the company's Falcon 9 rockets, which were used to send the first generation of Starlink satellites into space, is not plausible.

"Falcon has neither the volume nor the mass to orbit capability required for Starlink 2.0. Even if we shrunk the satellite down, the total up mass of Falcon is not nearly enough to do Starlink 2.0," Musk said.

According to Musk, the first Starlink 2.0 has already been produced, weighing about 1.25 tonnes and measures about seven metres long. He also believes Starlink 2.0 will supersede by an order of magnitude SpaceX's first generation of Starlink satellites.

"Just think of it like how many useful bits of data can each satellite do," Musk said.

"Starlink 2.0 in terms of useful bits of data is almost an order of magnitude better than a Starlink 1.0."

On Tuesday, the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) announced that it will once again be delaying its self-imposed deadline for completing the required environmental assessment of Starship for another two weeks.

Originally, the FAA had penned to complete the assessment by the end of 2021, but the deadline has been repeatedly pushed back, most recently from the end of April to May 31.

In mid-May, SpaceX reported its Starlink satellite internet service had rolled out to 32 countries and that as of last week, Starlink is licenced in all seven continents, after receiving regulatory approval in Nigeria and Mozambique.

RV,

That's the first I've heard of Starlink 2.0.

Hopefully our Government will let Elon Musk run.  He gets things done.

Tesla is transforming the automobile industry.  Yes, they are the clear market leader in the US for battery operated vehicles.  They are also leading the transformation from car sales by local dealers to car purchasing via the web.

Elon brought the U.S. the first economically reusable rockets.  They are in the early stage of transforming our access to space.  And it looks like they, and their derivatives, are becoming the new standard for the entire world.

And he's making low-altitude satellites relevant for almost everyone, not just edge cases.  The old Hughes Net type satellite networks are in the process of becoming irrelevant. Elon personally responded, within a few days, to a request from the Ukraine on twitter for communications help.  And I trust that Starlink 2.0. will be even better.

So I am an Elon booster, but not an acolyte.  I don't own any Tesla stock, any Tesla products, nor do I expect to in the next few years.

Thank you RV, for the new information.

Vladimir,

I honestly do not understand what you are intending to convey with the above quote.

My impression of Dylan's warning, is to beware of those who are currently in power and control the status quo.

To me, a key automotive example of this is feature bundling.  Why do I need to pay for a sun roof, to get the latest version of Blue-tooth?

If you think Tesla's marketing approach is disruptive - I agree.  If you think that it is customer hostile, I'm skeptical and genuinely interested in better understanding your perspective.

Hey why pay for a sunroof? My Tesla Model Y has the entire roof made of glass. I own the car and own the stock which from 2010 IPO has been volatile and profitable. I am up double what I paid in less than two years with my last block. It was three times what I invested on and off too and will be again. I am anticipating a stock split and don't want to get caught our without stock when it happens. Musk mentioned 20 to one split around August! Five to one would be fine with me like last split. (5-1 in 2020.) Remember when the RVrs here said since it wasn't RV ready yet they were not interested? Now it is and some of the most vocal naysayers admit they have it now and love it. Folks here don't read Teslarati and Musk's comments - only reading big oil propaganda.

Funny thing is it is the same as deciding to full time RVing. How many times have we told folks don't wait until you can't from illness or death. YOLO applies. There will always be folks with sour grapes comments because they think something is out of their reach and hate anyone who does it, at best envies them like stationaries talk about RVing. That does not make them stupid just like an Egyptian - in de Nile!
