scouserl41
We set up in SD last year and the registrations on our Motorhome and Toad are due next month (Feb). When we registered them they only gave us 6 months because they go by the first latter in your last name to fix the renewal date. Ours is D and that's February. I went on line yesterday and renewed them. For everyone worrying about wheel taxes etc., here's what we were charged 36' Class A $252 Highway Patrol Fee $1 Solid Waste Fee $1 State License Plate Fee $5 TOTAL $259 Toad $72 Highway Patrol Fee $1 Solid Waste Fee $1 State License Plate Fee $5 TOTAL $79 Credit Card Service fee $7.60 We set up in Pennington County SD thru Escapees and there is no wheel tax. Having just left California I think that this is very reasonable, and no inspections, no smog tests either. BnB
missourijan
We are domiciled in Hanson County using My Home Address in Emery, SD. A wheel tax was implemented there but our registration is still very reasonable, $220 for the rv and $120 for the truck.

JRP
Yes, SD taxes and fees overall are much lower than many states. But the Pennington County Commissioners did pass a wheel tax, it was to go into effect 1/1/2016. http://www.pennco.org/index.asp?SEC=159ED7CC-1E2E-41BC-9317-734BA70C3478&Type=B_BASIC However a petition gathered enough signatures to require the wheel tax to go on the ballot in Pennington county. Last Tues' vote defeated the Pennington county wheel tax by a wide margin. Keep in mind the state of SD already passed a state wide law last year that says any county that does not pass a wheel tax will no longer receive state highway funds for their local road/bridge projects. That money will have to be replaced from some type of local tax. This fight over the wheel tax also got some SD politicians to look much closer at the "non-local" RV'er population. Since the mail forwarding companies were the most vocal in fighting the wheel tax, some SD politicians are now threatening to close down the easy route to SD residency for RV'ers, even though the impact of the RV'ers vote was minimal on the defeat of this new tax. http://rapidcityjournal.com/news/local/predicted-rver-election-impact-fizzles/article_1871c14e-cdbf-5d1d-adaa-773523c0a9a9.html We set up in Pennington County SD thru Escapees and there is no wheel tax. hydehunter1
all counties will have to start charging a wheel tax or the state will stop giving them road tax money
LHS61
Not to belabour this topic, but I am glad that the overall tax structure for SD compared to Washington State is 60% less.... now all I have to do is study the positions of the SD politicians so I can cast an intelligent ballot later this year
Pappy Yokum
I too left the Peoples Democratic Socialist Republic of California for South Dakota. Please encourage your former CA neighbors and/or kin to do likewise. Place is/was getting too crowded. Makes more room for those of us who enjoy it (here). ~
