Just "happened" to "own" two trucks like yours, both singled long 127" to the axle from the BOC. On one I "installed an ET" to 11 inches beyond the end of the original rails and on the other to 39 inches beyond the end of the original rails.

What would you like know about them? Neither one is buried in 6' of snow, as a matter of fact both are "sitting in my driveway" in 71 degree weather.

Perfect image! Thanks! Would having it back that extra 2 ft make a big difference on the tow tracking and bobtailing? (and help with the front weight since we will be hauling a smart?) (13,200 axle on front)

Snow... don't start lol

Today we are having a blizzard, I cannot see my bright yellow semi that is parked 40 ft from the door.. The smart car is about 25 ft from the door and I can only see a black shape.. Currently 60 mph winds going up to 75 by this evening with them calling for two feet of snow lol Shoveled the front door step a few feet out to clear the door about 1 hr ago, just looked now and there is almost a 6ft drift there.

Hopefully we will be found in about 20 years lol

The second truck I converted was singled long.

We put a huge drom on it so he could carry two motorcycles and a heavy overhead hoist.

Also heavy diesel generator quite a ways forward.

And a bank of six auxiliary batteries mounted in the center, forward of the generator.

The ET was mounted very close to the panhard rod, about the position yours would be with the 11" extension.

2036257080096176628kieOAF_fs.jpg

The truck had 11K something front axle not as heavy as yours. Fully loaded with botch motorcycles and his fulltiming stuff, the front axle would overload by few hundred pounds, but the minute he hitched up (with 4,500 lb pin) it would drop to the 10K + region and be OK. Mounting an ET further back would help it some more, but I think you have enough margin on your front axle, unless you are after more space. There are other details of this conversion you might find interesting. Like the fact that in order to mount the ET this close we had to move the suspension leveling valve further forward.

Thanks for the info! :)

My hitch pin weight on this trailer is about 2300, very low for an et, but we will be doing an upgrade sometime if not converting a semi trailer sometime.

I did relocate my level valve, just never hooked it back up yet as I never had the truck going since due to the cold temps and weather.. Been putting a charger on the batteries every few days to insure they stay up though.

  • 4 weeks later...

Well, just finally had a half decent day, removed one of the 4x4 angle iron and test fit the longer one in there..

Currently I have from a rough center of the wheels to the pin is 30" and the end of the hitch is 42.5"

with my longer rails, the pin is about 65" and the end of the hitch would be about 77.5".

From wheel center, would 77.5" to the end be causing me to hang up a lot? My bags are drained right now so its sitting low and there is about 6-12" of snow underfoot so hard to get a good visual of how low it will be sitting at the back.

Expecting another blizzard tonight/tomorrow :(

Thanks

I guess you are not getting of the US "heatwave", yet. But looks like things are "improving", few HDTs have been dug out and "defrosted" and I'm hearing about "pending spring projects". I'm ready oir you guys!

Pool solar panels are in full on mode.

Which was warm enough for an early March dip.

The neighborhood pond has "acquired" a new resident who has been enjoying daylight temperature in the high 80's.

All I see is a pair of boots.. lol

Nope.. no heatwave yet. We had one day a few degrees above freezing. So I had a large tractor come in and snowblow the area around the camper and truck and dug out the smart.. NOW it looks like it will all be back. Calling for about 20"+ with about 50mph winds all tomorrow until Monday..

Red Green would be proud. The only way to do him any prouder, would have been to tighten the winch line with the suspension aired up. Hit the switch, truck drops, hitch swings back, gravity carries it through it"s arc to the high point, the winch line breaks, and the hitch lands on the pallet. Ta da!

Red Green would have used duct tape - and lots of it

well, Got the hitch moved back on the new rails.

From the truck frame to the end of the hitch, there is 46.5" of the 4x4 x 1/2 thick angle iron

Would bolting/welding a 6" channel on the outside of this 46.5" inch be strong enough?

Thanks

Not sure you need to stiffen things anymore. The ET plate spans both rails along 34 inch length creating one massive cross beam and then you have the extra long angles reaching the frame forward of the mounting. If you want to increase the shear strength in that area I would drill more holes in the sidewalls (and the angle) front and forward of the hitch and add bolts in that area. I'm assuming the extra long 4 x 4 angles replaced the ones that came with the hitch.

Hi,

Here is what is there now. I just loosely bolted the extra frame I had onto the back, If you think I need some extra frame back there, I was thinking about bolting this on then filling in the empty space with a custom bent plate that would be 3" long with the front angled to fit the original truck frame dove tail. The reason for this, it would allow me to have the holes and bracket at the back for the original taillight setup and to help close In the back of the hitch.

Yes. the white stuff is called "snow" :)

The angle is about 72" now made of the 4x4 x 1/2

Thanks

Jason
