  1. We had a slide-in truck camper stolen from storage many years ago.  We, too, felt like it was an inside job because we got too many inconsistent stories that didn't make sense.  Unfortunately, there was no way to prove it.  We were lucky that we didn't have much in the camper -- just a few things that were kept in the camper between trips like plates and silverware, none very expensive.

The worst example is that a right click only brings up a few choices and you have to click the "other options" to get the ones most often used.

I just purchased a new laptop with Windows 11 and, while for the most part I like it, this is the one thing that annoys me.  I save a lot of the stuff I do onto thumb drives and use the "send to" feature, but it's now on the second page.

The other thing that annoys me is the display size of everything.  The new laptop has a 17.3" screen and I expected everything to be larger than it was on my 14" laptop, which is the reason I got the larger screen in the first place!  Nope.  If anything, it's smaller!  I have figured out how to make *most* things larger, but it was still an annoyance.

No it's not. It's a Windows PC Program.

    Ken....

That's strange because when I went to the link you gave it said download for android which says to me phone or tablet, not a PC.

At this point, it's moot, anyway, since I have everything transferred over to Moneydance and, so far, it is working fine.

  4. Okay, I think I've found what I'm looking for -- Moneydance.  It's not free, but a one-time fee of $49.99.  I can live with that.  It's free to download and use up to 100 transactions which gives someone the ability to try it out before buying.

I downloaded the program and have started the work of changing everything over.  The layout is different than Quicken, of course, but so far it appears to do everything that Quicken does.  I like it enough that I went ahead and paid for it.

They do have an app that goes along with it, but the app requires a Dropbox subscription which has a monthly fee, so I will not be using their mobile version.

I would suggest that you buy an older version of Quicken on eBay or somewhere, like my 2000 version or 2gypsies 2009 version.  Only problem I see is that maybe the file system has changed and it won't accept your newer files, don't know.  HERE are some examples.

I think my problem may have come when I downloaded Quicken from the Internet rather than buying the software from another source.

I don't think that I can go from my current updated version to an older version using the Backup feature of Quicken.  So, if I went to an older version, I'd have to start all over again.

I have not been troubled with updates

I don't have trouble with updates, either.  That's not the problem.  The problem is that Quicken is increasing their annual fee and I'm tired of paying it.  I'm looking for an alternative.  Computer based, not an app or cloud based.  Free would be great.

I've been using Quicken since the 80's.  I'm currently using Quicken 2000 Deluxe on Windows 10.  It does everything I need, double entry bookkeeping.

And Quicken didn't start charging you to use their software a couple of years ago?  I was going to ignore their request to pay an annual fee, but when the date I was supposed to pay came and went, features of Quicken stopped working and I was forced to pay to get the software working again.

Why do you need to change or upgrade if you don't need it to be current for downloading data?  Are you using it on an Apple device?  Do you upload your data into a tax software program?  Just curious.

No, I am not using an Apple device.  I use Quicken ONLY on my Windows computer.  And, no, I don’t download data into a tax software program.  While I do use a tax software program, I manually enter information.

I need to change to something else because they're upping the annual fee and I really have been pissed that they changed from me being able to purchase their software on *my* timeline to being forced into pay an annual fee.

  8. I've been using Quicken for over 20 years and have always been happy with it.  A couple of years ago they changed to requiring an annual fee to use it (prior to that time, I could use the software for several years before upgrading).

Well, I just got an email from them saying that the price is increasing to ~$60 per year!  So I'm looking for something else that does what Quicken does.  I do not use Quicken's online features like being able to download information from bank accounts or credit cards, so that is not an important feature for me.

I do not want an app on my phone -- I use Quicken strictly on the computer, no Internet access required.

    Any suggestions?

  9. We are snowbirds, so typically don't travel during the summer.  We are taking a short trip to visit family later this month to pick up some stuff one of my sisters sent for me that's being stored at my brother's house.  But other than that, we don't have any plans on traveling anyplace else this summer.  We are still planning on heading south the latter part of October and return sometime the latter part of March, 2023.  We got stuck home this past winter and don't want to do that again if it can be avoided!

We are fulltime and watch all of our TV by streaming apps over cellular service. We don’t use a VPN and have not had a problem with any app yet outside of our domicile/billing address area. We just have to be sure to login every 3 months in our domicile area to YouTubeTV and I can have my son do that for me. Other apps such as Netflix, Prime, Disney, Paramount or HBOMax doesn’t seem to make any difference location wise except when we were out of the country. Then we had to use a VPN and with some apps we had to use certain locations for it to work, at least with Nord VPN.

    Thanks for the info.

We also have YouTube TV and you can change your Home Area twice a year.  Of course that doesn't work for fulltimer's who move a lot, but since we're snowbirds, it would work out fine for us.

I use a VPN at home, but not for any streaming.  It was too much of a pain getting different VPN servers to play with the different streaming apps.

Thus my question because that was the impression I got about using  VPN with a streaming app.  Probably why each article I read recommended a different VPN.

I don't know where you heard that streaming apps won't work outside your home area.  There may be some specific ones that I don't use that maybe is the case, but the major networks like Netflix, Hulu, etc don't have a home service limitation.

That's what I picked up from my reading, but perhaps I misunderstood what they were talking about.

We're going to be going on a short trip later in May to visit family, so we'll have a chance to try it out.  We'll just be using our tablet to stream this time rather than taking our Fire Stick with us...mainly because we haven't decided what we're going to do about WiFi.  Although we have Visible phones, because they limit hotspot usage to 5 Mbps, we get too much buffering when trying to stream.  We are considering the 5G device from Calyx Institute, but I have concerns about it working in various places because it uses T-Mobile's towers.  It's an expensive device which can't be returned if it doesn't work satisfactorily.

  12. In preparation for our trip south in the fall, I've been doing research into how to continue streaming our favorite apps (HBO Max, Sling, etc.) while on the road.  Seems that many (all?) streaming apps don't work once you're out of your Home area and the recommended fix is using a VPN.  In my research, each website I've looked at when Googling "How to change location on XXX" recommends a different VPN.

I know there are lots of people here who stream while on the road and I'm wondering what VPN you use and if it works across many different streaming apps?  (We don't really watch location-specific programming such as locals (which we can get with an OTA antenna) or regional sports, so I'm not really understanding why apps such as HBO Max won't let you view programming such as movies or series when out of your Home area.)

    Thanks for your help.
