  1. It's not that you can't trust it.  It's that you'd be pulling at the maximum hitch capacity.

Sure, you may have every intention of staying under 19,000#, but unless you stop and weigh frequently, you don't really know what your actual weight is at any given moment.

In the end, of course, the decision is yours based on your risk tolerance.

  2. I agree with Star Dreamer:  If the GVWR of your fifth wheel is 20,000#, I'd want a hitch rated for more than that.

A hitch has two ratings: The trailer weight towing capacity and the trailer pin weight capacity.  If THIS is the hitch you're talking about, it has a maximum 5,000# pin weight capacity.

Personally, I would not want to be pulling a fifth wheel that was at the hitch's maximum capacities.

Good deal.  Can you also hot spot from your tablet?

I didn't try it yesterday, but I was able to use it as a hotspot when it was on Verizon, so it does have that feature.  The problem with using it as a hotspot for streaming on the Visible network is Visible limits their hotspot usage to 5 Mbps which is not quite fast enough for a good streaming experience even with the resolution set at its lowest level on the Fire Stick.  While *some* videos play just fine, others do not -- too much buffering.

What model ASUS tablet do you have, Linda?

The Model number is P00l.  Looks like it might be a ZenPad 10, but that come from Googling the model number.  There's nothing on the tablet or in the "About Tablet" in the specs that says.

In another place, it says ASUS Z10-af57.

I'm no expert, but usually a SIM (when using a "regular phone account") might be locked to the IMEI of the intended device.  This isn't always the case.    Sometimes, too, the device (tablet) might be locked to a particular network.

I suppose the phone *could* be locked to Visible, but the tablet hasn't been on Verizon's network for quite some time since I no longer have a Verizon account and deleted the tablet from it before I ever quit Verizon, so I doubt the tablet is locked to Verizon.

I've had the SIM from my Visible phone installed in a Verizon 6630L hotspot for the past two years, Linda, and it works fine.

Thanks for that information!  I'm going to give it a try -- it either works or it doesn't.

  6. I have a Samsung phone with Visible and an Asus tablet that was at one time with Verizon.  Is it possible to put the Visible sim into the tablet? I know it's *physically* possible, but would I be able to stream on the tablet?  Yes. I know I can stream on my phone, but I really don't want to watch a program or movie on a tiny screen.

Can someone provide a reasonable timeline on when going full time, when should domicile be decided?  Do you go to Texas, for example, before or after you buy your rig to declare domicile (at escapees, etc)?  Does it make more sense to get out on the road with all your stuff and then do it?  If the latter, what happens to everything in the mail in between that time?

I would recommend getting your mail forwarding address set up at least 3 months prior to getting on the road and start the process of getting all your addresses changed over.

Once you purchase your rig, you can make the trip to your new domicile state to license your vehicles, get your driver's licenses, and register to vote.  Be sure to change your RV insurance to fulltimer's insurance.

If you have wills or a trust, have them reviewed by an attorney in your new domicile state to see if they need to be updated.

For example, I would NEVER drive a dirt road in the dark for the first time IF I could avoid it.  I have a vacation rental located on a dirt road.  I keep telling people, get here before DARK.  Yeah, want to know how times I have gone out looking for LOST guests.  This is on a simple road, you really have to work at it to get lost.

We lived in a location where GPS was totally wrong.  If you relied on it to find our place, you'd never find it except out of sheer luck.  I always gave people directions to our place and told them NOT to use their GPS to find us.  Most people listened, some did not, and for those people we'd have to go find them and lead them back to our place.

so we are pondering... 2nd booster shot in May (worried about public exposure all summer), or wait until Fall?

I was originally thinking about waiting until Fall to get my second booster at the same time I get my flu shot.  But that's 5-6 months away and who knows what different variants will be around then requiring yet another booster.  So I decided to get the second booster now and if a third booster is needed by Fall, I'll get that, too.

I enjoy maps and this kind of research so I've spent some time (as you can tell) trying to understand how they ended up where they did.

If you enjoy this type of thing, you may be interested in reading (if you haven't already done so) Tom Mahood's account of the Death Valley Germans.

I did the same thing with this story -- got my maps out and tried to follow along.

  11. If you go to Google Maps and put in Coaldale as the start point (which is an abandoned town -- more like a collection of derelict buildings rather than an actual town), and then put in the GPS coordinates where the RV was found, you wonder how in the #*$! a GPS would route them that direction if their end point was Las Vegas?!  Even if they didn't have "highway" entered into their GPS, why would it route them that way -- it's certainly not the shortest, or the quickest, route to Las Vegas!

This is why I would NEVER rely 100% on a GPS, particularly if I was not familiar with the area...I've read of too many instances like this where people relied on their GPS and ended up in very serious trouble.  I would always check the route on a paper map first to get a general idea of where I should be headed.

  12. Thanks for the information on the boosters.  I was not aware that they didn't help with 5G.

Using the T-Mobile coverage map, it looks like we'll be in Extended Range 5G on all of our stops.  The only exception is when we're at Lake Mead NRA -- it's showing as an Ultra Capacity 5G area.  So, hopefully, we'll do okay with the M2000.

Been told that boosters don't do anything on the 5G bands, but we do have a weBoost Drive Reach booster.

DW has a prepaid Verizon phone and a prepaid (monthly) Orbic jetpack that may be turned on/off as desired. Because she added the Orbic to her prepaid plan it costs $30/month for 25GB, the 50GB plan is $40/month, the unlimited plan is $50/month.

Unfortunately, it appears that Verizon no longer offers the unlimited plan for the prepaid data only plans.  Currently, their highest plan is 150GB for $100 a month, although they're offering a special deal right now where you can get it for $70 if you add it to your prepaid plan.  I'm not sure 150GB a month is enough data for us to use to stream and computer use.  Plus, $70 per month is more expensive than the Calyx Institutes' data plan using the M2000.

I am using the Calyx Institute plan on the M2000.  I had the plan on the Linkzone 2 for one year and decided to upgrade last month.  It is working great where we are for the winter.  I will know later in spring if it works better than the Linkzone 2 while we travel, but I suspect it will.

Bill, I'd be interested in your update to how the M2000 works for you as you start traveling.

Do you use a booster for the M2000?  If so, which one?

I don't plan on purchasing the M2000 through the Calyx Institute until around September, a couple of months before we head south.
