  1. Anyone familiar with Calyx Institute and, in particular, their Internet plans?  I'm looking specifically at the MiFi M2000 5G Hotspot device.  According to the Calyx website, this is an unlimited plan.  It uses T-Mobile, but not their partners.  I've used the T-Mobile coverage map to track a route from our house to where we usually stay during the winter and coverage looks pretty good, with a few areas of either no service or partner coverage.

What I'm looking for is a WiFi device that we can use while traveling in the RV to be able to stream to our TV using our Amazon Fire Stick.  I'd like to be able to use our Visible phones as a hotspot, but the 5Mbps that they limit the hotspot usage to is simply not quite fast enough for a good streaming experience -- too much buffering.

The biggest limitation of this device for us is that it is not a pay-as-you-go plan.  But if it works at home, we can cancel our Century Link Internet plan.

  2. Can someone explain to me how the Dish Wally OTA tuner works with the Wally?  Is it a simple plug and play or do you have to hook the Wally up to the OTA antenna on the roof in some manner?

This article seems to say it's just plug and play, but I don't understand how the OTA tuner can pick up OTA channels all on its own.  Is it an antenna of some sort?

We're nearing the time when we're going to stop our home subscription to Dish in favor of streaming and OTA, but we need some way of getting TV in the RV when we head south this fall (OTA *only* is not sufficient for us).  One option, among others, that we are considering is purchasing a Wally and sign up for Dish Outdoors for the 4-5 months we're gone from home.  Looking at the accessories we can get, I'd be interested in the DVR, Wi-Fi adapter, and the OTA tuner ( DISH Wally HD Receiver - MOBILE-WALLY | DISH For My RV ).  But I'll forgo the OTA tuner if it's not a plug and play device.

Today some additional googling said to (1) start watching your video, (2) press pause, (3) a little cloud thing comes up in the upper right corner, (4) press the upper portion of the outer ring and the little cloud will turn red, (5) press the select button and then (6) navigate to the choice you want.  I think I got that right.

Just tried this, but it doesn't work -- there is nothing that comes up on the screen except for the stuff at the bottom of the screen which I described in my first post.  I can see where I *should* be able to toggle Subtitles on or off -- it's currently set to off -- but I can't figure out how to make it change from off to on.  Highlighting it and then pressing Select just takes me back to the video but doesn't change the box from off to on.

    Linda,

I had similar problem with my Discovery+.  Closed captions were on and I couldn't figure out how to turn them OFF!  Google searches said to (1) start watching your video then (2) press the menu (three little bar button) and the closed caption menu would come up.  DID NOT work.

Yes, I've found that this didn't work either  -- nothing shows up when the menu button is pressed.

Haven't tried that!  I'll give it a try tomorrow morning (we're watching the Olympics right now).  I'll report back.

Some CC services are turned on through the Options key rather than the approach you described.  At least that's what I have found to be the case with my Roku.

There is no options key on my Fire Stick remote.

Some instructions I've read when googling the problem say to use the Menu key while the video is playing, but that doesn't do anything.

  6. I have an Amazon Fire Stick and I've turned on CC system wide (Settings>Accessibility>Closed Caption>On).

The above works across most of the streaming services I'm subscribed to.  An exception is Peacock.  When trying to watch a movie, I cannot get CC on.

    Here's what I've tried:

When the video is running, press down on the Navigation ring then use the Navigation ring to scroll left to the CC icon and click on it.  That does bring up a Subtitles box which I *should* be able to turn ON.  It's currently set to OFF and I cannot figure out how to change it to ON.  Pressing the SELECT button just takes me back to the video without changing it to ON.  And pressing UP, LEFT or RIGHT on the Navigation ring just takes me to the other boxes where I can change languages.

Anyone have any ideas as to how I can get CC turned on?

I think that I would try ordering again to see if you get accepted? I would think that if yours are in process it will reject your order.

No need.  They must have heard me complain because I just received a shipping notification!  It's supposed to be here by Friday.

And really, in this day and age, you should be getting everything via downloads.  Go paperless, saves time and it is just so much easier to download the info you need.   Same for everything from SS and Medicare, go all paperless.    IF you need something in hard copy you can always print it out.

Absolutely!  We download all our 1099s from our brokerage account and from Social Security.  There's only one 1099 that we have to wait to receive via snail mail and that's the one from DH's  previous employer for a life insurance policy for him.  Usually, he calls the woman who handles it and gets the number over the phone before we ever receive the physical 1099.

The Western Digital "My Book"drives are common choices for Dish receiver external hard  drives. There are some capacity variations among the various receiver models. Here's what Dish says about external hard drives: https://my.dish.com/support/use-ehd

Thanks Dutch.  I've bookmarked all these sites and will go over them in detail later.  I won't have to worry about it for a few month yet since we won't be leaving for Arizona until the fall.  But I'd like to learn more before I have all the equipment sitting before me and wondering what the @#$&! do I do now? 😅

...you could still have at least a two tuner plus OTA recording capability with a Dish Wally plus an external hard drive.

Although we have 2 TVs in the rig, we only watch one, so dual tuner capability wouldn't really be necessary.

However, recording capability *would* be of interest.  By "OTA recording capability" you mean recording OTA programs while watching a satellite program?  How easy would that be to set up for someone whose technical capability is limited?  And what kind of external hard drive would you recommend?  Is there someplace I can read about all of this?

We own all of our Dish equipment, Linda. With leased equipment, you will need to terminate your plan and return the receivers. Then you'll need to purchase your own equipment to get the Outdoor account that lets you suspend service by just not paying the next month's bill.

    That's what I thought.

We're getting cable Internet installed next week.  Once it's installed, we're going to do a bunch of streaming to try it out and see if it will really work for us (we've been trying to use our Visible phone as a hotspot, with mixed results).  If it does, we'll cancel Dish and just use Dish Outdoors for those months in the winter that we are down in Arizona because we'll have no way of streaming (on the TV) while we're in the RV (we have a 12-volt TV that came with our 2014 Class C and I don't think it has an HDMI slot for our Amazon Fire Stick (although we haven't been down to the rig yet to check it out).

I'll miss the ability to tape shows while we're watching something else that we have with the Hopper 3, but I guess I'll learn to live with it! 😁
