  1. Dave, The Cannonball Bike rally will arrive in Bloomington this afternoon and the bikes will overnight at the Harley dealer there. 95 pre 1917 bikes riding coast to coast...... I'm riding the Guzzi to a Cincinnati lunch stop to see them here today. BTW, Erwin "Cannonball" Baker was born about 10 miles from here.
  2. Paul and Paula, I'm gonna guess you'll stay in Medora while visiting Teddy R. NP. Don't miss the Pitchfork Steak Fondue. https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&url=http%3A%2F%2Fmedora.com%2Feat%2Ffamily%2Fpitchfork-steak-fondue%2F&source=maps&cd=1&usg=AFQjCNHPKLKjGza72spmb_WH3tEilEzb7Q&ved=1t%3A3443%2Cp%3A1RLKV-TwE4PImQHZ86XoBg Yes, it's a tourist trap, but the musical is decent and funny, foods okay and entertaining. Besides, there ain't much else to do in Medora..........
  3. Dang. We came past there last evening. We live about 20 miles away, near Lawrenceburg. You're welcome to stop by. My cell # is 513.284.6927.
  4. Paul, If you can make it work, going out of Yellowstone through Lamar Valley and riding the Bear Tooth Highway is something you'd not soon forget. Leave lots of time to stop in Lamar and watch the wildlife. As you come into Red Lodge, Mt, there's a decent ice cream place on the right, right along a creek. There's a red caboose across the road as a landmark.
  5. Today, however, we plan on starting off real slow and then tapering off. I wanna be like you when I grow up.
  6. Yes, our visit in Woodland Park was too brief. Perhaps next time......... We're now in Lake City, CO, enjoying the scenery, and swatting mosquitoes. Headed back to Indiana and the humidity in a few days.
  7. x2 what Peety said. If you want to emphasize the word, just make it bold or in italics.
  8. We're in Woodland Park, CO for a couple/ few days. No camper this trip, staying in motels, dragging a couple of motorbikes to play on these great roads. If anyone is here and interested in honking up, give me a holler at 513.284.6927.
  9. Heading for Colorado for two or three weeks. Not taking the rig, as we'll be staying with family or friends much of this trip. Hauling a couple of motorcycles to do some re-visiting of places we've blown through on prior trips. If any of you would like to spend a day showing a couple of flat landers around on motorbikes, we'll certainly try to head your way. For now, we plan to be in Ft. Collins for a few days, and will visit a cousin in Denver at some point.
  10. Hey Paul, "Travel without adversity is just a tour."
  11. We are working our way towards RGV. With a little luck, we should arrive tomorrow (Tuesday) afternoon. Today was one of those days that reinforced my decision to join the hdt ranks. We lost the trailer brakes, going down hill to a stop signal. Near 20k back there......... So, when it gets light, I'll start diagnosing. Never worked on electric/hydraulic disc before.... MaxBrake says trailer connection lost so it might be a bad connection in the plug or Jackalopee.
  12. I doubt there's a question that's not already been asked, and answered. That said, I've not had great success with the search function here. However, the Resource Guide is a treasure chest of answers. It's the second item down on the front page of the HDT forum. Oh, and by the way, Welcome!
  13. Perhaps you should be more careful with whom you ride, and camp? Besides. I like being a little riffy once in a while.
  14. Little seems an accurate description, with what appears to be four sites. In the heart of some of the best motorcycling roads in the USA. Enjoy.
  15. We've been actively looking for a toy hauler, and I'd narrowed down to the Newmar X-Aire and the Carriage C-Force. Either is hard to find in nice condition, but there's a few out there. We'll likely take a trip this winter and try to make a trade somewhere. Once in a while you'll find one with all the right stuff, but they're scarce, and usually on the wrong side of the country. For us, buying new just doesn't make sense. We aren't in a position to spend enough time on the road to justify the costs, yet. But a gently used unit with solid structures, but some small bruises, is fine.
  16. Put a piece of nylon fishing line along side the screw as you install it. (Farmer's locking thread.) For bigger thread, a bit of weed eater string works well. Or shave a sliver off a nylon zip tie. For a short term fix, a thick blade of grass or stem from a leaf will work until you can get proper supplies. Hey, when yer stuck out in the field with limited resources, you can get pretty creative. Glenn's correct about the blue loc-tite. And you can get it as a waxy paste now, sort of like big chap-stick. John Deere dealers carry it.
  17. If you like to see how the weather is around North America, check this out. http://www.wrh.noaa.gov/zoa/mwmap3.php?map=usa Move you cursor over a reporting station to see current conditions, click once for forecasts. Click, then wait a few seconds and the bar near the top will give you the option of "NWA FORECAST".
  18. I titled in Ohio. Only requirements were: bed for sleeping, table and seating for dining, refrigeration or ice box, cook range or oven. No mention of hitch type on the paperwork they gave me. I filled it in, signed it, paid my money ($25 or $50) and got a motorhome title. That was in 2010.
  19. Pulled in here at the house mid afternoon. Volvo di what it was supposed to for the last 3000 miles. Engine still has a miss when hot, under load. I will be having a discussion with Cummins about this. Six and a half lost days, $2500+ in repairs, $250-$300 in lost fuel. and all they fixed was a slight oil leak. But it still was a great trip. 44 days on the road, not one cross word between me and my bride of 40 years and 8 days, and lots of memories. I'll do a write-up when we get settled in......
  20. Made it to Ft. Nelson, BC today. Spent two days 210 miles north of Whitehorse, Yukon, fixing a coolant fitting that had been improperly installed by a previous owner. Drove the smart 500 miles one day on a parts run, and spent another $500 for parts and labor, including a case of anti-freeze. Btw, do you know how to make antifreeze? Hide her nightgown. Saw two hdt's pulling 5ers north today in Yukon. Both were old Watkins trucks.
  21. Noticed a fuel smell in Denali, and saw a dribble on the ground order the rear of the motor. Uh-oh..... Pulled into Fairbanks to meet with the Church's and fuel is pouring out of the front of the high pressure fuel pump. Fortunately, Kenworth Alaska had a re-man pump in stock, so $980 later we are not marking our spot. Will the hemorrhaging of my wallet never end? $5500 in repairs so far on this trip. But, we got to spend some quality time with Janet and Raymond. We've met so many nice folks through this forum. Tomorrow, we need to find out why our trailer brakes aren't working, then begin the trip back to Indiana. The gravitational pull of the grand kids has grown to a force greater than that of a black hole. Grandma needs to get back, but so does grandpa.
  22. W are sitting 40 miles north of Denali NP. Truck is finanally running properly, after having spent 5 days and $2440.oo at Cummins Northwest, only to have to back for more repairs yesterday. Seems that if you don't properly torque rocker shaft bolts, the shaft will break, valves won't open, injectors don't squirt, etc. But you kill lots of mosquitoes, and go through 50 gal of fuel real quick. They repaired it, no charge, but we lost yet another day of play time. That makes 11 days of repairs since June 21. They wanted to hold us up an additional 4 days for a new charge air cooler too, at $2500 plus labor. I declined, as I am pulling 30# of boost and I can get the c.a.c. for $1028 back home. On a brighter note, the smart is doing well, we had a great day fishing for halibut down at Homer, and now we're going to unload the dual sport motorcycles to explore around here. Susan saw some pictures of the Denali Highway, and is all fired up to get on two wheels. That's my girl.........
  23. Had I done as Jack asked above, we could be rolling, rather than sitting in Tok, AK for a fourth night. (Sigh) During the last leg through Yukon, we started hearing a "thumping" sound on the larger bumps. Several times, Susan went in the back of the cab and each time reported that she thought it was coming from the storage area under the seats. At a rest stop, I looked under the cab and discovered that the cross member supporting the cab air bags had failed, allowing the right side of the cab to bottom. An hour later, going up a long hill, we both heard what seemed to be an exhaust leak. It sounded like a manifold gasket at the head. I was pulling nearly 30psi of manifold pressure, and the engine seemed to running rough, like a miss. Rolled in to Tok, AK, and found a welding shop. The grudgingly agreed to tackle the cross member, but advised I find a Cummins shop for the exhaust gasket. Took the old girl (Volvo, not wife) to the welding shop the next morning. It took all day for them to extract the cross member, and one of the air bags did not survive. You can see where the robber has been cracked for a long time, so the mechanic is not to blame. Of corse, the shop was closed yesterday, July 4, and today they plated the bag supports, and we're looking for a suitable bag to get us going. So, about that exhaust leak......... I called a friend who's a Cummins tech in Toledo, OH, and explained the symptoms. I told him that the engine ran great normally, but later in the day would sometimes seem to run slightly rough on a hard pull. He said the sound that I thought was an exhaust leak was most likely an injector going bad, which explains the slight miss and vibration, and the reduction in mileage that I'd blamed on head winds and higher speeds. Hopefully, we will get the truck back late today, head down to Anchorage tomorrow, and get the injector fixed on Monday. I have an appointment for Monday morning at Cummins Northwest in Anchorage, but they're expecting to replace the manifold gasket. On the bright side, we took the smart to Chicken and had an enjoyable tour of the old gold dredge. And we've met lots of nice locals. But, my wallet has sprung a leak.
  24. We are in Haines Junction Yukon, in a crappy little campground, Still paddling north. The road has been far better than I expected, but every once in a while I get caught off guard and hit a bump too fast. We had one day of seeing a lot of wildlife on the road, but yesterday experienced more pounds of mosquitoes than animals. The scenery has been amazing. We could be in Fairbanks or Anchorage tomorrow, depending on which way the wind blows us.
