Budd, I spent a week in Fallon one afternoon. It was the last stop on US 50 to get the stamp to prove we'd done the Lonliest Road in America. Except we didn't just do the Nevada section, we did Ocean City, MD to the Pacific Ocean. You're right. Fallon has little to offer.

Don't get in a hurry, and you can get in to a nice truck for 1/2 to 1/3 the price of a new 1 ton dually. I lurked here for a while, asked some questions, and found a '01 Volvo 770 for $19.5k, with auto shift and 700k miles. So far we put about $5k in to the bed and air hitch, and another $1500 in repairs. Or, do as I wish I'd done, and buy one already built and tested from some one here who's moving in some other direction.

Hey Budd, Last time we were through there, there was a huge cottonwood tree known as the "Shoe Tree" between Fallon and Austin. Heard vandals cut it down. It was worth a drive to see it.

Toy haulers are easy to overload, as I found out. An HDT with a reasonable bed, or box, can get a lot of weight off that trailer. I was in a similar situation as you. The truck in my signature and a new F-150 (leather,crewcab, 4wd) cured the issues for less than a new dually.

There are some tried and true units for sale here. Some are killer deals. As one who bought a rig piece meal, I HIGHLY advise that you consider a complete unit. Look in the "For Sale" section of the forum, and then do a search on that person's post to get a feel for their character. But I'll tell ya now, I've been lurking and then posting since sometime in about early '09, and I can't think of anyone with a rig that I wouldn't trust.

Just spent a most delightful day with Cindy and Jeff Brett. They are staying near here on their way back to their summer base, and we got to meet up with them a couple of times over the past few days. Spent today cruising the hill country along the Ohio river, stopped at three wineries, and had supper with them. Such a fun couple.

When we get home, we'll try to add Longhorn Lodge and RV in Dubois, WY to the HHRV site. Nice place, friendly folks, easy to navigate in park, and 100' sites.

In Longhorn Lodge and RV Park in Dubois, WY (n/w of Jackson/Grand Tetons) for a couple of days, then heading over to either Red Lodge or West Yellowstone for a few more days, before heading up to the Flathead Lake/Glacier NP area.

Bicycle? Uhh, forgret about that Ouray/Telluride Dolores loop then. If you can beat the train on a bicycle, my hat's off to you.

That's a slooowwwwww train. Easy to beat it on a bike. My bride and I love that area, and especially CO-550. If you get a chance, and feel like taking a rather long day ride, do the loop of Ouray/Telluride/Dolores and back to Durango. If you have dual sports with you, there are lots of nice gravel roads to explore too. Beware of the curves leading up out of Ouray. They're marked 10 mph, and at 15 mph I was dragging the pegs on my CBR.

Since you had so much trouble getting it licensed, wouldn't "Paper Wait" be more appropriate?

Welcome. As you've probably noticed, there are a couple of capable fabrication artists here, and they're always willing to offer some sage advise. Some of us may be inclined to take you up on your offer for weld jobs, if you'd kindly include a location?

I have a former Ryder truck for the farm. (2000 CH 613 Mack day cab) So far, after 3 years of neglect and abuse, the only problem has been a failed window mechanism. The truck had 828k on the clock when I got it, runs great, rides nice. Complete records convinced me to buy it. That said, I purchased our Volvo from a Volvo dealer. Ryder mostly has cheaper trucks with more miles, and for a travelling vehicle, I wanted something a little nicer. Came close to buying a '05 Freightliner single axle from ryder cincinnati though.
