  1. Elon Musk's Satellite 2020 Starlink Interview -- most of this interview was on SpaceX. Bad interviewer. Nothing new. Long story short . . . Starlink seems to be designed for RVers.
  2. No it's not. Seasonal flu has a death rate of less than 1% while the COVID-19 death rate has been estimated at 3.4% (data from World Health Organization). Also, the current death rate for those aged 70 - 79 is 8% but that percentage jumps to almost 15% for those 80+ (from Worldometer). Finally, you can get preventative flu shots and treatment medication for seasonal flu, but there's currently nothing for COVID-19.
  3. Satellite 2020 -- fingers crossed. Hoping for Starlink announcement.
  4. When I was 65 (on Medicare) and my wife was 63 (on the ACA), we work camped in CA. My wife's AZ ACA Gold plan just covered her and cost about $1,000/month. Though our AZ ACA health plan was a PPO, it was an in-state PPO and didn't have a national network. If we had known about and used the ACA's SEP (Special Enrollment Period), we could have switched to a CA ACA plan while work camping in CA. As it was, we had to travel back and forth between AZ and CA for my wife's medical procedures. Anyway, I think the only way that an ACA plan is affordable is if you qualify for a subsidy.
  5. Careful. Not all PPO plans offer nationwide networks. Some are in-state only. FYI, TX is probably one of the worst states for health insurance, and Polk County (Escapees's ground zero) is one of the worst counties in TX for health. However, its ranking has improved in recent years -- now 208th out of 244 ranked TX counties. Zow. From my research, there are at least several states that currently have nationwide PPO health care networks: AK, AL, AR, CA, FL, and WY. AK, FL, and WY all have no states taxes. If you have more than a year or two before Medicare kicks in, get outta TX. Also, Escapees would not be my first choice for anything related to health care because . . . Broken web site links The indemnity plans spotted by Blues The failure by Escapees to look anywhere beyond SD, FL, and TX for health insurance Finally, while Christian health share ministries are an "affordable" option, I don't suggest them because the horror stories are starting to come in.
  6. If you're talking about qualifying for ACA health insurance, then it doesn't matter if a state won't recognize a mail service address because the ACA is a Federal, not state, program. The ACA is concerned about where you actually reside.
  7. On 2nd blush . . . Since high-density areas (urban, cities) could overload Starlink, that would mean differentiating high- and low-density (rural) areas some way -- Zip code? Furthermore, would Starlink have the smarts to turn off service to someone passing through a high-density area? Or why bother? Mmmmmm . . .
  8. In June 2019 Elon said the value of Starlink is to provide low-latency, high-bandwidth internet access to the sparse and moderately sparse and relatively low density areas. Rural and semi-rural places that don't have any or any adequate internet access are optimal and will target 3% - 5% of people in the world. It is not well suited for high density cities.
  9. Weather can diminish signals to and from the satellites.
  10. Even without laser links, it could still be faster than conventional fiber -- using ground relays with Starlink
  11. We're now at 300 sats with today's successful launch.
  12. P&P, didn't mean to offend, just following up on oldjohnt's "opinions and anecdotal evidence" statement.
  13. No, anecdotal means based on subjective personal experience, not on any sort of objective data.
  14. Typically, folks rely on one of these brands: Progressive Industries -- the "crowd favorite" as Progressive had a limited lifetime warranty from the get go. Progressive units offer comprehensive electrical fault protection (miswiring, open neutral, etc). People tell stories on how they were able to get new units after their Progressive gave up the ghost. Recently, Progressive was bought out and tightened up their warranty requirements. Surge Guard -- offers a product line very similar to Progressive's. Like Progressive, Surge Guard was acquired by another company (Southwire). However, unlike Progressive, Southwire increased their warranty protection and now offer limited lifetime warranties, just like Progressive. Southwire also offers a voltage regulator ("autoformer"). Hughes Autoformer -- an autoformer (or voltage regulator) is a must for me as it protects against pedestal under voltage, a common campground issue. Hughes new autoformers offer electrical fault protection, but I'd rather use a separate Progressive or Surge Guard unit. Hughes offers little in the way of what exactly is their fault protection, and furthermore I don't believe a Hughes autoformer will automatically disconnect if it detects a serious electrical fault -- Progressive and Surge Guard units will disconnect. Finally, be wary of the lower-priced Progressive and Surge Guard units as they often don't offer full electrical fault protection nor will they all disconnect your RV from a power pedestal in case of a serious fault. Some of these cheaper units just "indicate" that there is a fault.
  15. The US is much much more ethnically diverse than many countries, especially Asian nations. For example, Japan is about 98% Japanese and South Korea is 99% Korean. Being homogeneous simplifies an educational system while diversity presents a host of challenges.
  16. We stayed in Yellowstone last August at the Yellowstone Holiday Campground and Marina and then at Yellowstone Grizzly RV Park. Grizzly was the better of the two because it was within walking distance of Yellowstone's West Entrance, near grocery stores and restaurants, and had better facilities. Yellowstone is a huge park (about 55 x 60 miles), so I suggest signing up for one of the park tour services to see the park. Otherwise, you're fighting traffic. We made campgrounds reservations at the beginning of March. Yellowstone Map
  17. Another 60 Starlink sats launched today I think the total sats is now 240.
  18. Just so you know . . . there currently isn't a vaccine for the current Coronavirus outbreak.
  19. Right. He's only lived in China for three years. What would he know?
  20. Was dancing around a fire or animal sacrifices involved in any of this?
  21. Not hardly. Listen to this Westerner living in China
