We just spent a week boondocking in the desert south of St. George, UT.  We ran one (of three) 15K BTU roof top air conditioners everyday from about 10:00 am until 5:00 pm.  It was in the mid 90’s every day, so the AC was to keep the living area of the RV cool for the cat and dog (and my DW).  In that week, I ran our generator for a total of about 5 hours.  One of those hours was me testing the generator and a recent fix to keep it from overheating.  The other four hours were to recharge batteries after a full day of mostly cloudy weather where the solar couldn’t keep up with the AC running.

We have a large system on our rig (3390 watts of solar, 1080 amp hours of lithium batteries and dual 5KVA inverter chargers).  I intentionally built the system this large so we could live in our rig pretty much like we were plugged in, whether we were or not.  It is nice to be energy independent, but it does come at a cost.  Luckily for me as an installer/dealer I didn’t have to pay retail prices and my labor was “free” so it wasn’t a horrible cost.

If i may ask Chad, How low do you pull your batteries.

  2. Now that summer is here and sun is plentiful we can run acs 24/7 and use no park power. Now if we run the clothes dryer, we will run out of battery before morning sun. That dryer really pulls the wattage. Really think I will use a gas dryer in my house or maybe heat pump dryer. Have to research that more. The mini splits are doable with my system. I intend to have additional solar on our property. Solar fairly cheap. Batteries costly.

I think he's saying that it's a pain in the butt to break camp, hitch up, and take the trailer down to get it inspected.  Then, take it back home and set it up again.

Also can't get a vechile inspected on weekend. So even if I got weekend off couldn't get it inspected. I finally found a person to do inspection unseen. It is illegal. I am glad it is over.

You can register your vehicles without having the inspection you will just have to have it inspected the next time you are in the state.

The inspection here in Texas is pretty minimal compared to some states and, personally, I am all for it if it keeps the folks with bald tires, burned out bulbs, semi-functional wipers, etc. off the road. The emissions "testing" is pretty minimal too as all it looks at is if any emissions parts have been removed or disabled. In Colorado I had have my truck emissions tested on a dyno and here diesels are exempt.

Most all my  work was in Texas though

    Rod,

I think you're in Canada. Are you full-time living in your RV? Or are you talking about a stix n brix unit. I would think the RV units may be similar. I would contact LG by phone because either something's wrong or perhaps one component can be upgraded without replacing the whole system. I was surprised that some are rated to -15 F!

I was about to research them more as we will need a new A/C heating system in the next year or so. I like the idea of Mini Split heat pumps. We rarely get below zero her but do. Since Mini Splits replace both Furnace and A/C  we have a backup vented/sealed from the inside gas fireplace and can heat with it if a mini froze on us.

    Here was my first stop:

I would check to see if LG or any RV systems can e upgraded for below 0°F weather.

Rob is likely asking about the one in his Spacecraft unit.

    👌 Missed that.

The original statement confused me because an inverter changes 12v into 120v, and when he said the microwave clock was running slow, and then something about the inverter not charging the batteries, and because I know that the microwave runs on 120v shore power, it didn't make sense.

microwave will run on the inverter. Everything in our camper does.

When you buy gas in one state you pay whatever tax that state adds to the price, so they already got their tax.  If that state doesn't add a fuel tax then that's their fault.  But if you get your vehicle inspected in Texas, then immediately drive out of state and don't come back for a year, Texas has no claim on any mileage you put on your vehicle in the past year.  That is why a gas tax will never work.  No one is going to try to keep track of where you put the most miles on your truck over a 12-month period.

Maybe so but charging senior citizens like this that only drive to grocery store and back would be a burden to them and unfair.
