  1. A 26 ft TT may be barred from the rare National Park CG. Chiricahua has a 25ft limit IIRC, but that is unusual in my experience. You would start hitting more frequent problems at 30 ft. And to be honest, if the limit was 25 ft, I'd not let that stop me with my 26 ft. The limits aren't that exact and there are no RV length cops in the parks.

  2. I think that if the parks spent their money on maintenance and park improvements that it would go a lot further. They need to stop adding land until they catch up on the maintenance backlog. And some improvements would generate revenue in my opinion, like converting campgrounds to FHU and charging higher camping fees. And adding more campgrounds.

To get this done they need to kill those irrational environmental and archaeological studies that they do before every minor improvement. Like requiring those studies before they run a new sewer line under an existing road to a bathroom. That was reported by one park management company. And that killed the bathroom fix.

Some return of lands to the states would also make sense, I'm talking about BLM and NF lands not parklands. A look of the history of Yellowstone would show why giving that to the states would be a mistake. But lots of BLM and NF land is just leased out to ranchers. Why do they need federal protection to do that?

  3. So you're not an expert, but you slam current sat Internet systems and imply that Musk's SatLink is just around the corner. Classic.

    -----------------------------------------------------------

No I just suggested caution before spending $1500-6000. You could spend $400 on a cell booster and see if that is good enough. Just where did I slam Hughes anyway?! You need to improve your reading skills.

I was careful not to claim that I had special knowledge. Musk has launched 1/6 of the initial array and we can assume he'll be adding to it. Not the usual Musk vapourware in other words. Amazon has taken no concrete steps that I know of, but again I have no inside knowledge.

  4. I'd try a signal booster first before spending on sat internet. Especially since it is in a position something like the dinosaurs on the Tuesday before meteor Wednesday. Musk's SpaceX and Amazon both say they are launching satellite systems and  SpaceX has actually launched the first big batch of satellites. I read a lot of boondockers actually have some cell phone signal that can be amplified.

But let me hasten to say here, I'm no expert in this field myself. We are looking at various solutions ourselves.

  5. One visit for a physical for me. I use mail order (Walmart) for almost everything and in theory I could have the order shipped anywhere in the country. I'd have to know I'm going to be in fixed location long enough to get it tho. They have express delivery for a fee but I haven't used it yet. The problem with that stuff is that some needs to be refrigerated.

I also have an old workman comp injury and take a minimal dose restricted medication at night. In my case that requires a office visit every 90 days the doc somehow got the 30 day limit waived. I haven't had to deal with that yet since we haven't been away quite that long but next year that would be possible. That insurance company can be a PITA sometimes. I'm going to talk to the doc about non medicine solutions, maybe electro stim.

  6. Thinking ahead to next summer. My wife can retire and so that will give us more time. I was thinking about Canada up to Jasper anyway but decided to hold off one that for awhile.

So now I'm looking at traveling from Florida to Great Sand Dunes for a few days. I have a number of COE sites along that way. But going west from GSD is the question and I'm looking for suggestions for boondocking or at least dry camping.

I have a 4WD F350 pulling a 30 ft Arctic Fox TT that is designed for backcountry roads. Mild ones anyway no step ledges...heh. I'd like to find some good scenic spots that we can get the TT up to and in. We have done half of the Alpine Loop in the truck, Engineer's Pass was closed. It seems like there may have been some spots in the eastern section of that before you hit the mountains.

Area I'm looking at: west of GSD to Cortez and north to I-70. Nothing particular in mind except maybe that mesa south and west of 141.

Then into Utah probably, Bryce, Escalante, Canyonlands ect.

    Thanks for any suggestions.
  7. I'd be happy to help but I am a bit far away in Florida. Check with Homedepot or Lowes they maintain lists of people looking for handyman jobs. I believe there is also an online service that you may find with a little google work.

Replacing a toilet is really no big deal tho.  A couple of bolts. I wonder since you live in the restrictive part of the country, could there be laws limiting what a non certified worker (plumbing in this case) can do? Maybe that's why you cannot find one.

  8. OK the day we were leaving on an eight week trip I got a jury notice in Florida. The first in 30 years. I filled out the form asking for a delay until after August saying we were traveling and requested an email reply. A week later I got the reply postponing the appearance until mid October. Painless.

  9. My wife has a much abused Verizon prepaid phone. I have a prepaid ATT moto. While we were on the road this summer up thru Utah, Wyoming, Idaho, Montana and points SE back to Florida she repeatedly got roaming warnings on her phone. I never saw one on my ATT moto. Is this something Verizon does to prepaid phones?  Also if she ever had a Verizon signal but I did not have an ATT signal, I never noticed it over 8900 miles.

This is important since I'm going to be buying her a replacement soon and wonder if we should continue with Verizon. We, unless there is an excellent reason, don't want to be locked into contracts. Tho since we are paying the prepaid fee every month I'm not sure how much difference there is monetarily. We just want functional phones and are in no way interested in $600 or more super phones.

Me especially since I do not live on my phone

  10. This article may be of use to people planning next years trip. Dry areas are maybe more likely to have wildfires. And IMO smoke filled air ruins your trip.

Good article if the idiot writing it could just ignore being politically correct and attribute this to plain old weather. The Brits by the way are predicting a bitterly cold winter, I'm not sure if that carries over to North America. Wunderground

  11. As a long time Florida resident I know that you need a FL drivers license and Florida Tags for your vehicles. For those you need an address. Or perhaps official mail with your name and that address. Then you can go to any county DMV (you can get an appointment and they are nothing like the CA DMV) and visit the county Tag/Tax agency. It's possible that you might need proof that you paid sales tax on your vehicles. Call up one of the tag agencies and talk to them they are generally very helpful.

    Alachau County Tax office info

That's the info for the local office, they are all the same.

  12. Let me point out something different. In order to camp on the Valley Floor in Yosemite you will have to win their camping lottery. They run the lottery 7 months to the hour before the dates you want to reserve. And you HAVE to be online and ready to reserve a spot at the right minute to have any chance of getting what you want. Sites go within minutes and I am not exaggerating.

They may have changed the details so you need to carefully examine their website for instructions.

B F Goodrich All Terain in my opinion are the best truck tires out there. Make sure you get the KO2 model. I think they may even have the KO3 now. I always had them on my Ford F-350. I now have a Jeep Wrangler and get the BF Goodrich Mud Terain. A little harder and noiser ride but good for a Jeep going off road. If you want to save a little money they also make the Rugged Terain.

That is my preference and I wish I had them on the truck now. But I don't live in snow country.

"I could post 20 or 50 more links if you link. That site above is 100% data driven."

That's ok.  Wikipedia describes the site you're citing (wattswupwiththat.com) as:

".. a blog promoting climate change denial that was created by Anthony Watts in 2006. The blog predominantly discusses climate issues with a focus on anthropogenic climate change, generally accommodating beliefs that are in opposition to the scientific consensus on climate change"

So I doubt we'll be agreeing on anything.

See that's the problem with people on your side. You wear blinders so you will never have to face reality. I look at far left pubs all the time, NYT, Washington Post, the Atlantic and so on. That's an advantage to having an open mind.

Almost all those links above show actual reference links to journal articles in major scientific peer reviewed journals.

If you want to argue data then do it, I was somewhat impressed by the fact that you seemed to be willing to enter a data driven logical discussion then you revert to form.

    As for your quote above:

" I regard consensus science as an extremely pernicious development that ought to be stopped cold in its tracks. Historically, the claim of consensus has been the first refuge of scoundrels; it is a way to avoid debate by claiming that the matter is already settled   … Consensus is the business of politics. Science, on the contrary, requires only one investigator who happens to be right, which means that he or she has results that are verifiable by reference to the real world … The greatest scientists in history are great precisely because they broke with the consensus "

    Albert Einstein

Science does not work by consensus it works by experimental proof and data. Only on
