    Myth Busters

With the deep freeze hitting us I thought I would bring up fuel jelling. It was -18 with a -45-wind chill here the other day. It has now warmed up to a balmy -6. Luckily, we had no problems here on the farm because we have blended fuel plus, I topped all the equipment off with straight number 1 fuel. Does wind chill effect fuel jelling?

We get DEF in a 300-gallon tote. I guess I don't know how much it cost. I never see the bill.
  3. That is a really nice truck. I was parked next to him at the West Coast Rally a few years ago.
  4. I am in the process of building a bus. I already have an HDT, and 5th wheel but I do a lot of off grid tent camping. Places where the big rig can't go. It's nothing fancy but it works. I just did the minimum required by the state of Nebraska to get my Mobile Home license plates. Added a 20k universal hitch to pull trailers. I have a roof top ac unit from an RV. I just haven't put it in yet. I only removed 7 seats to do the conversion. I wanted to leave as many seats as I can because I use the bus of Boy Scouts. It is imposable to get parents to bring their own kid to a campout. The bus saved lots of headaches. I have my bases covered. Yes, it is licensed Mobile home. I can transport anyone I want as long as I am not getting paid to do it. State farm doesn't care what the license plate says. A bus is a bus, so my insurance is personal use commercial. The first picture is what It looked like when I brought it home.

How many of us has a tubing cutter and how many of our old eyes can even tell if it's a 90 or 85 degrees just by looking. I cut it with whatever sharp tool I have handy and if it's pretty square it gets used.

I have heard that rumor. I also heard the rumor that Frieghtliner is no longer having Cummins either. If you want a Cummins, you have to go with an International.
  7. That is not what I was thinking when you said horse trailer. I was thinking like a gooseneck.

On the KW 880 and T 800 the oil filter sits over the steer axle. I only fill them half way if I even remember to do that. Because if the filter is full I spill a bunch trying to get it up there anyway. This is good to know. I will make sure to tell the shop monkeys to fill them form now on.

Been a while. If I remember right it just has a screen.

The older Deere had horizontal filters. Then they went vertical for the 8000 series. Now they are back to a canister type.
  11. You can put 17,000 on a single axle. How big is your trailer? You wont get much for the international.

The only reason I am still running duals instead of skinny singles is I couldn't figure out a good place to put a spare tire. My plan is if I ruin a tire it will be taken off the rim and the empty rim placed on the inside dual and run a single until I get home. we have 6 trucks and they all take the same size tire. I have plenty of new and used drive tires in the shed I will not buy one on the road.

I see this one on Facebook all the time. If you run a single wheel instead of the duals your wheel bearings will wear out faster.
  14. I went from a 07 Chevy crew cab long box to a 03 freightliner singled long. Does the truck ride better? Absolutely not. Are we more comfortable? Without a doubt. When we were on long trips I was always exhausted after a few hours. Always having to be on my toes. Trailer always pushing the truck. With my Freightliner I set the cruise and go. My stopping distance has dramatically improved. Wife is not so nervous. Another big plus is the kids are farther back in the sleeper. If the get to fighting and arguing I just turn the radio up and I cant hear them.
  15. Scotchlocks were invented by the devil. I thought they were awesome when I first discovered them. But after a few years not so much.
  16. Having to do wiring is my nightmare. Being partially colorblind. I can do repairs but it takes me a long time to make sure I have it right.
  17. The truck should not squat at all. But one inch could be tire squat. We are still harvesting so I will have one of the guys measure the nose of his grain trailer empty and loaded. Just out of curiosity. I will report back tomorrow. I don't know if I would start jacking with the leveling valve. You change that and you start messing with the driveshaft angles.
  18. I reused them. That's what is holding my 5th wheel plate on. I know someone will probably argue but We reuse them all the time. They are frame bolts. Most of them are fine thread.
  19. I installed a 20k curt universal weld on. It has a 2 1/2 receiver so you can get a receiver with the pintle hitch on it. I bolted and welded it. Everything is black so it blends in very well. It's hard to see so I will probably put some reflective tape on it.
  20. I would ask 30 and go from there. But those miles are dangerously close to overhaul territory on a 60 series.
  21. Try owning 6 with a dozen trailers. If it's not one thing it's another.
  22. We have a 90 Kenworth on the farm with 3206 Cat that does that. It's been doing it for years. It clears up after a minute or so in the summer. In The winter I smokes until it warms up. White smoke.
  23. In Nebraska the DMV told me I can pull anything I want as long as I am not getting paid to do it.
  24. It's not just trucks that do that. I added a 50-inch light bar to one of our newer tractors. I just spliced into the headlight wiring like I did on the older tractors. Boy did that piss things off. All the lights started flashing and just shut off. That was a real butt pucker upper. I thought I fried the whole system. Cut the wires to the light bar and everything returned to normal. The computer did not like the extra draw.
  25. I have been too busy with Boy Scouts and working on the bus to do anything. I really need to get the truck out and go for a drive before winter hits.
