2007 vnl ved12d engine temp

My engine temp as measured by the analog gauge changed this weekend, (normally about 172), and the max temp that I see on this particular route has gone up significantly, but not to the red.  I compared the analog gauge to the digital gauge in the menu system and they almost never agree.  Is that an issue?

Secondly, this has the electrically controlled viscous fan clutch.  Periodically I hear it roar for about 5 seconds, then quiet.  Any way to test the clutch to see if that's the issue?

It wouldn’t hurt to use a garden hose to spray water through the rad and condenser from the fan side.  Over time they often get plugged up and with the light loads we pull they need to get quite bad before we notice on the temp gauge.
