Here's a chart that is illustrative of the differences between "real 5G" and DSS 5G.  Although the chart is a year old, the data is still reasonably current.

The bars on the left are typical of the speeds that can be achieved with mm wave 5G.  The yellow bar is the sort of speed that can be realized when using what some people call "less than 5GHz 5G".  And the two bars on the right are typical of "low frequency 5G".  Considering that I recently measured a 4G download speed of ~130 Mbps with my Pixel 5, DSS 5G won't offer all that much of an improvement, at least, not at first.

About 40 miles south of houston and just got a Samsung Flip 5G, not sure if model of phone make a lot of difference, but my wifes Moto Z got 10500 mbps download on 4G LTE, and I got 21000 mbps on my Flip 5G, but Had to move outside to get that speed, otherwise phone would change between 4G and 5G.

That's why most of the 5G currently being discussed is NOT the millimeter wave 5G that is better suited to high density urban locations.  Most of what the "Big Three" carriers have been talking about lately is what is known as Dynamic Spectrum Sharing (DSS) 5G and it involves using a portion of the 4G spectrum for 5G transmission. The downside is that the speeds aren't as high as what you might have expected for 5G but you'll have service a lot sooner.  The newer phones such as the iPhone 12 and the Pixel 5 can receive both mmwave and DSS 5G.

Here's an article that describes DSS 5G in more detail: DSS 5G explained

Appears to be an advancement on the current 4G LTE network as it uses the same antennas, etc. as the existing networks. Appears you will need a hardware change anyway on your phone though even if the frequencies are the same. How much faster is the DSS 5G over 4G LTE?

I was surprised to see Sabine Hossenfelder doing this since she usually does physics but she does a thourogh job of this subject. Apparently there is a major fuss about 5G with people destroying 5G antennas and such. You need to stick with this video to get to the most interesting part. For one thing she points out that 5G antennas need to be about 100 meters apart to work in the high band. Not something which we are going to see in rural America. Remember Europe has much denser population. But here it is: 5G hazards explained

Interesting, but agree that antennas 100 meters apart is not feasible for most of non urban America.

Hmm , that seems strange .

    I just had a look .

Thanks, never would have thought of that.

Transfer switch. Had not considered that. That probably best option. Just set up like originally planning and use an auto transformer for shore power when needed. Would need your help setting that up. Not familiar with them.

    https://www.electricgeneratorsdirect.com/stories/3-How-to-Pick-the-Perfect-Manual-Transfer-Switch.html

Not sure why you need an auto transformer. If your inverter supplies 240 volts to your trailer breaker panel, 50 amp grid power would do the same thing, transfer switch just picks one source or the other assuming your inverter would supply 240 volts with a neutral. If you only have 30 amp service, different situation. If an electric provider hard wires power to the transfer switch, should be easy to specify what voltage and amperage you want.

If I couldn't sell power back might not go that route. But we can have days of rain and I wonder if I be good with just solar and batteries. Having to use a generator??? Reliant Energy just down the road. Will contact them to find my options. How much solar you have?

I have 5200 watts, not enough to run house, [I have old fashioned big watts central air.} Your other option if you can't grid tie, is run grid power to transfer switch and use batteries and solar when possible, and switch over to grid power when batteries and solar can't handle it.

Been reading up on net metering. What I understand they credit for power used at retail only. If produce more that you use, buy at wholesale. It not mandatory in Texas. But understand is available. Need to talk to power company. I really think it is the way I should go. We will be self sufficient on sunny weather. It is days of rain with cloud cover that I would need help. Now if I take the battery out of the equation, I would burn power at night and overcasts. Could save battery for MH.

Trouble with Texas is they have over 70 electric providers. Where I live, no net metering at all. My solar guy 20 miles away has net metering but only get credits on his bill and cannot sell excess power back to the electric company. Works for him because he can use those credits on his non solar houses. In some states they will buy your power at wholesale prices which may only be 1 or 2 cents per KW. Like you say, check with your different providers.

We're considering pulling out six year old FullRiver 400AH 6 volt AG batteries and replacing with BattleBorn 100AH Lithium's.  Any input on the below questions is appreciated:

    1.  My current 6 AGMs give us 1200AH (600 usable).  I'm thinking six 100AH Lithium's will give us the same usable amps, right?

    2.  Should be plug and play, after adjusting the charging data in the controller, right?

    3.  Any thoughts on how much the six year old batteries have degraded, they haven't been used hard except the last year.

Thanks in advance for any feedback!

    Brad

If you are talking about adjusting the solar controller, yes, but you will also have to adjust your converter or inverter/charger profile, and if you charge off the trucks alternator, you might need a B-B charger.

  9. Nice thing about Battleborn's is they will take a big charge until they are full, so if charging from solar, they will take advantage of your max solar output. without the solar derating current for absorption and float. Same with charging from generator through converter or inverter/charger, Much shorter gen run time. I swapped my four 8D's at 500 usable a/h's to 6 battleborn's and freed up space and dropped 460 lbs.

I am doing an installation of a Renogy DC-DC charger aka battery to battery charger on my truck camper rig.

I know I can call Renogy support and double check all my figuring but I thought it might be helpful to start a thread where experienced people can post information that can help others...

    Anyhoo...

The installation instructions call for the charger to be connected to both terminals on the vehicle starting battery, not using the chassis for ground.  (I plan to have a fuse or breaker at the + connection).

    My question:

Wire run from the battery to the device mounting location is approximately 24 feet. Do I use the total length of both cables + and - in calculating wire guage when the device is not grounded "locally" to the chassis?

https://grealpha.com/resources/dc-load-wiring-calculator/ This one uses one wire lenght for calculation.

  11. Also been to Vladivostok in  the 90's delivering missile cutters after the missile reduction program. Great people, very friendly. Trouble was the cutters weighted  90 tons and they had no way to transport them to the missile sites. Last I heard they were still sitting at the dock rusting away. Did buy a case of plum vodka, alas, was so good, drank it within a year.

  12. Never leave mine hooked up to shore water. Fill the tank and use coach water pump till 1/4, fill again and start over. Had a buddy on shore water, that left for the day, and came back to coach will water coming out from all sides of the coach and a small lake under the coach. Pex fitting came loose under sink. I turn my water pump on when I need water, and off when I don't need it.
