  1. I was 81 Christmas day.

The huge age gap between our generation and those <50 means differences in how we travel and camp. The instant communication on a cell phone of the facebook escapees better fits their needs and lifestyle.

I predict the escapees discussion forums will mirror the decline of the FMCA discussion forums, although some years later, as they too have a facebook site.

So you are thinking of another move? We just moved a few hundred feet to a bigger apartment and moving seems to get to be more work with every passing year. We thought we were buying our last home when we left fulltime life but that has not turned out to be the case. And we are to a point of downsizing even with the vehicles. I believe that you are about 10 years younger than I so here's hoping that health treats both of you better than it has Pam.

I'm sorry to hear Pam's getting worse, becoming a caregiver for your life mate is difficult, for me anyway. That IMO is what we signed up for when we married.  My wife has gotten so much worse in the last 2 years we are not able to use our MH when/if we ever get it back from the body shop. It's almost too late for us to move to a smaller house. It's all I can manage to keep up the outside work and the inside work.  I suspect our move will be from our house directly to assisted-living or a nursing home.

Lins want's to downside, sell our 40' MH and buy a smaller RV. One of these electric units appears to meet her needs; if they become available this year. At this point, whatever she wants I plan to make happen while she remains mobile.

That's backwards. Induction "burners" work by exciting the magnetic/ferrous atoms in the pan or container which then heats the food.

    Exactly!

  4. When you look at the trailer it has what was called a "suicide door", hinged on the aft side.. When it came open the wind over-powered her and pulled her out.

I suspect, since they were en-route to somewhere to watch the eclipse, there were more people than seats in the tow vehicle.

This is a very tragic accident the driver will never forget. In Indiana the driver is responsible for the safety of all passengers.

For instance if the vehicle is pulled over and a passenger is not wearing a seat-belt, the driver is ticketed. Likewise with people riding in a truck-bed, driver is ticketed.

As to Airstream design; when you look at their website, some are hinged on the forward side, some aft. It depends on floorplan and awning arm positioning. The Airstream involved has an awning arm beside the door so close if the door had hinges on the forward side the door would hit the awning arm.

I do suspect a design change in the Airstream future.

  5. The Dexter Axle recommendation to repack and inspect wheel bearing annually or at 12,000 miles is  a preventative measure to make sure slightly damaged bearings are caught before having an expensive failure that might also ruin the spindle, cause an accident or complete loss of a wheel.

I lost a wheel from a flat-bed trailer while hauling a tractor due to neglecting that recommendation.

the job is not difficult, just messy-bit that's why vinyl mechanics gloves are sold.

  6. I only use a wye when staying long-term. Every wye I have said drinking water safe on the tag, even the brass 5 hookup wye I bought for use at a rodeo grounds CG with once central spigot for every 20 spaces. Then other campers would use their wye on the end of their hose to feed another camper. If everyone did that, 25 campers had access to water from that one hydrant to re-fill their fresh water tank.

The CG had a honey-dipper to empty waste tanks.

The kitchen is closed up tightly but I was going to vent it out the back of the trailer using an 8” hole to the outside. I can always buy a vent cover and cut the door as well to accommodate a vent large enough to vent out the heat. When I’m parked I usually leave the kitchen door open.

Please read the 3-way fridge installation manual before proceeding:  https://norcold.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/IM_N7V_N7X_N7LX_N8V_N8X_N8LX_639300F_20200401.pdf

When operating in the propane mode, chimney temperatures will easily reach 350°F, proper venting is essential.

An absorption refrigerator will not work without proper ventilation and it can be dangerous to try. If you were to get one of the new, 12V compressor refrigerators it would work without the extra ventilation. If you do decide to cut a new vent, be very sure what is in the wall where you plan to cut as you might affect the structural integrity of the RV.

Yep, Lippert says they depend on the TT manufacturers chassis to augment their frames.

That picture of a spark plug in the air intake, may have some actual thoughts to it.

I was at a shop a few days ago that works on old equipment and hit and miss engines.    He was moving stuff around, and he seen this carburetor in a pile of engine parts.

I will do some more investigating about the idea when we get back home.   We are adventurously traveling around south eastern Montana for a few days.

That's the first I ever saw a spark plug added there. When I was in high school I had a spark plug in my cars tail-pipe, let off the gas and flip the switch, KaBOOM. One guy put it in the exhaust pipe and blew his muffler off.

  10. I would avoid the border crossing hassle and vehicle insurance costs and reserve a site in Texas directly in the path of the blue line.  https://www.traveltexas.com/things-to-do/outdoor-adventure/great-texas-eclipse/#:~:text=If you're planning on,entertainment%2C lodging and dining options.

The path of totality in MX is in the state of Sinaloa, which is Mexico's most crime-ridden state.

This website is recommended for  tracking cloud cover on eclipse day. https://eclipsophile.com/eclipse-day-weather/

  11. Angie M; FWIW, the 18' slide room in my MH has basement compartments in it, and Winnebago says those compartments have a weight limit of 300#. That may be useless to you, but I thought it might be an indicator of how the entire industry feels about added weight to a slide room.

  12. Lowering the temperature setting will make it even more cold inside the fridge. Frost/ice inside a refrigerator means high humidity levels. Absorption refrigerators have a slow recovery time. Check door seals for not sealing properly, you do that with a dollar bill test. Every time a door is opened it allows chilled air to spill out and replaced with warm humid air. Only open the door after you have decided what you will remove or insert to reduce the number of time and length of time a door is opened.

When our kids were young that was my most common concern with the absorption refrigerator, keeping it cold inside and ice/frost formation down. They would open a door then stand there while deciding what they wanted.

Have you considered swapping out your hard drive for an SSD? I did that with my ten plus years old laptop and it transformed it. Now it boots up in seconds, not minutes and is perfectly functional for the things I do. Happy with the result. Also, more RAM always helps. If you're annoyed with long boot times, you could just put in in sleep or hibernation. I almost never turn off my computers. Jay

Re: Your poll, I don't think there is a best, just what works best for each individual.

I second that recommendation. I swapped my old 1TB HDD for a !TB SSD then added 16 additonal MB of memory to my  old HP P6-2350 I bought in 2004. It runs  dual-boot W10 and Linux much faster, now my limiting issue is, I only have access to DSL internet, with no cell service here at home..

So far as I know Jacob Lake has one CG, mot a resort and has water restrictions since they are having water trucked in. One small FS CG right at the town. This puts you and hour or so from the gate and the park village is another 15 miles.

Kanab and that area is at least another half hour. Why there is a lot of boondocking in the surrounding NF there are also a lot of boondockers. We were there on opening day last year.

We stayed at Jacobs Lake and it's a good 30 miles North of the North rim gate that I remember, but it's the closest FHU CG. I'd have dry camped in the North Rim CG but no spaces for a 40' RV.

Thad; anticipate snow at the North Rim in early May. How's that going to co-inside with your hiking permit difficulty??
