One question:  How do I tell if the compressor is electronic?  None of the specs I saw mentioned that.

Several of the freezers we looked at were like the new(er) fridges that are a dc compressor- either 24v or 48 volt.  They run off their own inverter that is picky about its input power supply.

  2. We've been running a 3.5 cuft upright freezer for several years.  Had on in the Carrilite 5'er, and now have one in the DRV.  I run them off a small dedicated inverter so on travel days, it still has power while the rest of the trailer is dead. The DRV has the residential fridge but the extra freezer space means we have packages of bison, crawfish, lamb, etc foods that we can't find in different areas.

When we were looking for a freezer, we intentionally went cheap with an old fashion non-electronic compressor.  This allows a cheap modified sine wave inverter to power it.

  3. Here's a madman theory on why we are warming more now than past decades.

From 1944 to 1963, 528 nuclear + 2 famous explosions, took place above ground. Millions of pounds of dust was thrust into the atmosphere at all levels.  The dust is and has been slowly settling allowing for more uv sunlight to reach thru to the earths surface returning us to a warmer state.  Same effect as a nuclear winter they all warned us about, or the effect that we see after a major volcanic explosion. This nuclear effect can be traced but is rarely mentioned.

Another issue that may be farfetched, is all the cloud seeding countries are doing.  Last year China seeded an additional 5 MILLION square miles.  They had devasting flooding.. On the other side of the globe we had drought. Coincidence maybe, but common sense says you can't wring out the atmosphere over one land mass and expect it to rain over another.

I skirt through the corner of Oregon going to the WCR every year double towing.  I always keep my eye out.  So far I haven't had an issue.  It would be a hassle and add quite a bit of added distance and time to not skirt the southeast corner of Oregon on Highway 95 going north out of Winnemucca, NV for me to get to the WCR.

We're just north of Medford in Shady Cove.  30 miles on I-5 and another 20 or so on US-62.  Pulled in the park and there were several comments about double towing in Oregon.... I'll say ignorance is bliss....  Went by the weigh station, and I know 2 highway patrol.  I have seen commercial doubles on the highway, so maybe the officers thought I was commercial.

  5. My lil' ole' M11 likes to run between 1500 and 1700rpm.  That difference in RPM is 65mph to 71 or so.  If we're running across the mid west plains, and have a head wind that is already penalizing us in economy, I'll kick it up and go.  Running across North Dakota, at 60mph we were getting 5.1mpg, sped up to 70 and got 4.9. That 10mph difference got us to our destination about 40minutes early, set up. enjoying a beverage in the wind....

  6. We put Firestone on the steers.  this is the second set. Truck came with 10 yr old Toyo's on the front when we bought it in 2014.  Replaced them with another set of Toyo's.  Had a weird wear pattern show up on 1 and swapped them for a set of used Firestones.  Those were replaced after the front end rebuild with another set of Firestones. Total mileage from when we bought the truck to now is a little over 230k.

Rear tires are Hercules all position closed shoulder. We have around 180k on them since 2015 and they are starting to weather check.

The OP is talking about SR-140 which heads west from US-95 north of Winnemucca, NV, through the Sheldon National Wildlife Refuge and on into Oregon through Lakeview, Klamath Falls, and ends at Medford.

We've driven the road, but the OP may want to take a look to see what the Mountain Directory West has to say about it before deciding whether or not to drive it with their long rig.

To the OP:  If you do decide to head this way, be sure to fill up with fuel in Winnemucca because the next fuel stop won't be until Lakeview, which is 211 miles from Winnemucca.

Got fuel covered.  HDT with 250 gallons when full.  What's the chance of being stopped on SR-140 and having to have my wife follow for 4 hours?

Why would anyone go south from SLC to pick up I-40, when they can pick up I-80 and head west right out of the driveway?   Please tell us that was a typo.

SR-140 crossing Oregon.  We double tow, about 78' overall length.

We used to take 140 all the time but last time it was very rough and there is one grade that is a real nasty. Sacramento is a long way around. We've taken 395 and it's a good road and if the weather permits it's the way I would take, I'm sure this time of year it will be fine but check ahead. From Reno to Medford was a one day run for us.

    Thanks!

We've never been to the northwest... and my job is sending me there now.....

  9. We double tow so I'm looking for a route that will get me as close to Medford as we can before we have to separate the toad.

    Options are -

    1. 80 to Winnemucca then 95 north to 140 west.

    2. 80 all the way to Sacramento and 5 north- looks like a long ways around

    3. A route from Reno up 395 to 299 to 139 over to I-5.

Weather is a concern on any passes as well.  We're heading that direction Friday.

Good heads up. The Class A next to us here in the campground has a 150 class toad. In the bed are two 90% tread steers for the MH. It's their ace-in-the-hole while traveling.

So question.... If the dealer says "ya, we don't have any (Mitchelins, BFG) but do have...."

Which other brands should we either consider and/or stay away from for drive tires?

I put another set of Firestones on my steers.  For Drives, knowing you'll never wear them out, I'd do a 2nd tier if that's what the dealer has.  I've run Hercules all position as drives for 100k miles with no issues.  Had them balanced and run centramatic balancers on the axles.

Another sad thing; there are fields of FEMA trailers still stored in many states. sitting there rotting away.

So many of the FEMA trailers had chemical off gassing issues that caused respiratory diseases in a bunch of people.  There were class action lawsuits over it.

But Forest River and Thor got rich, the guys hauling them got rich, the people that sold land to the government that the parks were put on got rich....

  12. This has been the summer-fall-and approaching winter of truck repair.

First was a front end rebuild, king pins, bearings, all new brake parts, couple of tie rod ends, and new steers.

Second was a new clutch, rear engine/front transmission mount, new input shaft, rear engine seal.

Third was a Cummins ECM.... yea... can't get that part... but Midwest ECM is a great company to deal with.

Fourth and final has been a rebuild of the trucks separate house battery system.  Its always had a separate AC/DC system to power the fridge, microwave, 2 outlets, and to run power to the RV.  The 2002 era Zantrex inverter finally died.  So with needing a new inverter, charger, etc. I've pulled out all the old and am in the process installing the new.  Instead of putting it back in the original old locations, all the electronics parts are going in the jockey box area with the extra batteries in the truck bed storage.

Personally I would contact Chad Heiser. He is a police officer in California and he tows with an HDT.

Second that.  Chad is also on several of the HDT Facebook groups as well.
