  1. I used to drive it on but now use a removable  portable winch that attaches to flat bed. Use to get alot of gaukers. Don't even think about it if planks are wet. Had a big block behind sleeper in case couldn't get stopped.

The problem with old school engines is that they're in an old school truck, meaning creature comforts are not what they could be.

Compromises........  For a weekend unit, I'd be all over the old school, but for extended travel, little things like delay wipers, heated seats, quiet cab, all add up.

I try to avoid the rain. My air wipers will drive you crazy. They do have electric conversions for $$$. Me and wife like our new leather with backrest seats. My Pete's 34 yrs. young and everything works. Will hold air for a week and suspension couple months. Could sell for 2x what I got into it. Don't have to worry about  falling asleep driving it though.T3Che1Gl.jpg

  3. They don't make them like they used too.  I'll stick with my older Cat 3406b. Its all mechanical. Only thing electrical is the starter and fuel shut off. The fuel shut off can be manually bypassed. Will start and run without batteries. Give it a push or pull and let out clutch and its running. With close to a million miles no engine work. The alternator and some ac parts have been replaced. Old School Baby

Just had my right knee replaced about 2 hours ago. Now I can work on the Volvo again! Well in a month or so. We will probably have snow atleast that long anyway. I have to figure out why the abs dose not work, the left front brake grabs and I need to install the premium shifter and lots of other stuff, the longer I lay here the longer the list will get.

I also want to make a binder to show law enforcement. Maybe I will even have time to post build pictures from last July.

Had a fatal heart attack and by the will of god brought back and to hospital. Come to in intensive care. Docter introduces himself and tells me I am a lucky man. I take his hand and thank him. When will I be as good as new? Why you ask? Well I go to drag races. When's your next race? This weekend. He didn't know what to say. My daughter says Dad you embarrass me. I went back to sleep.

  5. I live in Mi. and pull my racecar with a Peterbilt 359 with antique plates. Use to have Gulfway Insurance and now state farm. No CDL also. The only one  I know of was Jegg's with their huge bug yellow rig with their name on side getting a big ticket for not having a CDL driver. Hello your commercial advertizing a business. I think my buddy just put a porta potti in his Freightliner. Funny thing the SOS just played dumb with me saying just get it weighed for $$$.3qyQSiml.jpg

  6. Kids bubbles works great for finding leaks. Pump your brakes and see which needle goes down. That will be one side of system but are really one. 5 minutes is a long time to go from 105-120#. My old 1984 Pete will go from 0-120# in way less time. The old girl will hold air for a week. The suspension for couple months. It even has air wipers. I think I may still have a leak inside transmission. They used the flare style fitting back then with rubber hose. 35 yrs. old and have only replaced a few of the small gauge and wiper lines.

So the Ram 2500 with 6.4 3.73 gears and 4x4 leaves about 1800lbs extra towing after factoring in passengers, truck cargo, and max fifth wheel GVWR.

How do the experts feel about that wiggle room? Moving to the 4.10 gears increases tow capacity by 3k. Is the upgrade worth the reduced gas mileage? Is the driver satisfaction that much greater? OEM upgrade is small potatoes compared to the overall cost of the vehicle (<$200) vs thousands to upgrade later.

Higher gears may not reduce gas mileage if vehicall was working harder and know has found a sweeter spot. May have to drop a couple mph. My 6.7 Ford diesel will start out at 14-14.5 mpg at 60 mph and will drop from there. It will actually do better in hills than on flat ground. All that power doesn't bother it going up hill and then its just coasting going down the other side. An engine is just an air compressor than needs a ratio of fuel mixed with air to run. More rpms means more fuel

What range gear ratio is best?

Depends on tire size and final transmission ratio. If you got the power lower rpm's are better. My old Cat makes the most torque and hp at 1450 rpm's  and it purrs and runs quieter at thet rpm but it was ordered to pull and thus the 3.90 gears. Trucks today make big power (torque) and run at lower rpm's to save fuel and make money.

  9. I just drive my old Cat at 60-65 mph. Would I wish I could run at 1450 rpm's (max torque and hp and where the Cat purr's) yes but will just have to do 1700-1750 rpm's. I would have to change two rear ends and only the speedometer adapter. Too much $$$ knowing it was run more than likely at least 60-65 mph. most of its 1,000,000 miles. I only put 2k-3k a yr. on the ol girl.

We started out with a Starcraft popup. We had three daughters, one son and the two of us.  We usually carried a screen house for additional space. With the pop-up each child had a chore to do in getting it set up and broken down.  twenty years later the kids are still talking about the good times they had (even tho we squeezed everyone in.

We started with a crown and ended up with three kids. Pulled it with a 1973 Jeep cj 5 (still have the jeep) Put a zillion miles on it and lots of fond memories. Went camping on my honeymoon in 1972 and still got same wife and indoor plumbing now.

The only time that they have problems with the DEF system on the Ford diesel is when the owners keep topping off the DEF tank instead of waiting for the DEF warning light ("800 miles remaining on DEF").

Could it be something like that? Are you filling the DEF tank before it indicates that it needs to be replenished?

Not true on my 2014 Ford. If I wait it takes awile for warning light to go away. Or is there some reset? Just reminded myself to fill it before upcomming 1800 mi. trip.

It's fairly common to switch from trailer tires to LT tires, but not to passenger tires due to the sidewall structure not providing the support needed for trailer weights. I understand that the side pressure as the trailer is being maneuvered in turns and while backing doesn't bode well with passenger tires on a trailer either. Have you been using them awhile?

Been on trailer 15 yrs. Not a fan of trailer tires. Bought new tires for car hauler with a 400# higher rating/tire. Went out 5 times and had 3 blow outs. No more Carlilsle's for me. Bought a new but used trailer. Had a couple blow outs on 8 yr. old tires. Bought same brand and had 2 blowouts in one yr. These are radials and the sidewalls are paper thin. My first trailer tires were 10 yrs. old and replaced them because the tread was worn and they just barely matched the trailer weight. Any more bad luck and going to truck tires. I check air pressure religiously and usually drive 65mph.

I would assume that you will be towing with an equalizer hitch of some type and those do provide at least some antisway, but I would still recommend use of more. I use the Curt friction sway control on our trailer.

    Welcome to the forums!

These are a joke. There's no mechanical advantage the way they mount. Your trailer would have to go 45 degrees for them to work. Now if the front or back location was moved out then they would slid in and out more and the friction part could do its job.
