  1. Hot air rises drawing in cool(er) air at the bottom of the enclosure (chimney).  This cooler air helps keep the fins on the back of the unit cool.  If these fins don't get cooled, the unit will not cool properly.  Without the chimney the fins simply generate heat and there is no natural air flow to dissipate it.  Without an enclosure your at the mercy of the wind to cool them.

The unit will still operate out in the open but nowhere near as efficient.

You could probably make it work by installing a fan to blow cool air over the fins.  Many people (and some RV manufacturers) install 12 volt fans in the "chimney" to improve cooling.  Especially if installed in a slideout.

I once had to replace the cooling unit on a Dometic and left the unit sitting on the patio overnight to test it.  It would not sufficiently cool the interior sitting outside.  After installing it back in the RV with it's chimney it worked fine.

    Hope this helps.

  2. 2Gypsies....pay close attention to the Corps icon towards the right of the facility listings.  If there is not a corps icon there, the corps does not operate those sites.  Have a look at Lake Oahe (https://corpslakes.erdc.dren.mil/visitors/projects.cfm?Id=G612960).  Over fifty recreation areas on the lake and only SEVEN are managed by the corps.  Granted, many are not campgrounds but there are seven that ARE campgrounds and managed by someone other than the corps.

  3. Couple of thoughts......

Could there be some moisture in the tank?  Could be freezing when it hits the regulator.  Cold nights may be adding to the already COLD propane and freezing any moisture.  I have tank and heater I use in my shop (tank is outside) and on very cold nights the pilot on the heater goes out.  I suspect moisture because it never goes out during the day when temperature is above freezing.

Second, could the fan be failing and when it is cold it just cannot get up enough speed to close the sail switch?

Is it even trying to run?  Fan running? Ignition attempted?

  4. I also am on Medicare and TFL.  After every office or hospital visit I receive a medicare statement showing what they paid and what I may be billed.  Soon after Tricare For Life statement comes telling me they have paid the "what I may be billed" amount.  These statements are not always timely - received one yesterday that dated back to March of this year.

I am certainly no expert but I understand that as long as your provider is under contract with (accepts) Medicare AND you have Medicare Part B AND the procedure(s) are covered by Medicare AND your covered by TFL you should NEVER see a bill for doctor or hospital.  At least I don't and have not for nearly ten years not (I am 74).  You will have a copay on medications though.  Hospitals and doctors have billed Medicare well over $100K on me this year and I do not expect to pay a dime!  Of course Medicare only allows a much smaller portion of what they are billed and you cannot be billed for anything over what Medicare allows.

FYI for others - TFL is Tricare for Life that covers military retirees over 65 and is essentially a Medicare supplement.

Appears to me you will have to go to the Post Office to pick up mail.

We have stayed there many times but never tried to receive mail there.   Someone else may have more info.

  6. Initially we chose a house sitter the first four years we full timed.  Couldn't have asked for a better situation.  Unfortunately she had to move on so we decided to rent for a few years (four more).  No issues to speak of with maintenance other than a drain field replacement that was due regardless.  Decided we wanted to sell the place in 2008 so asked the renters to vacate.  We did not use a rental agent but would highly recommend doing so.

To avoid capital gains taxes we chose to once again have a house sitter for three years and officially call it our home base (we paid utilities and such).  This house sitter was a second cousin and it was not a good situation.  They didn't trash the place but close to it with dog stains all over the carpet and holes in the freshly painted walls where pictures had been hung.

We ended up keeping the place and moving back in after eleven years of full time.  Glad we kept the place as I now have my shop back and ten acres of pasture to keep me busy and healthy!

  7. I used these: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00ARADQR2/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1

two on the frig and two on the freezer.

I tried the bungee and Velcro but found they did not keep the doors tightly closed on corners.  Mine is a RF197 but basically the same door configuration.  The freezer door "self-lock" feature did not work well on corners either but he RF18 may be better.

  8. What exactly did your father do to "fix" the fuse?    The plug on the end of your cord "looks" like a 220 volt dryer plug but it IS NOT. it is 120 only.  If your father rigged a dryer type 240 plug for you chances are several things got fried including your converter.  Check the voltage on the plug your plugged into and make sure your connected to 120.  Read across the two flat connectors.

  9. When hail wiped out the skylight on my previous rig (Landmark by Heartland) I replaced it with a Maxair powered vent.  I really like a vent directly over the shower to vent the steam out.  I still had plenty of room for solar - if I remember correctly it had 600 watts total.

Tempted to remove the skylight in current MH and replace with powered vent.
