Chet, the issue isn't posting to the forum.  I can't get the pics from my phone to my laptop.

I had no problems with my old computer.  I up loaded hundreds of pics during my bed build, and posted them here quite easily.  But I am growing to dis-like Windows more and more with each "improvement".  W-11 really sucks.

That's for sure, but I don't yet want to go with the other one as it's trying to copy Windows stuff or so it seems. I would like to be back with Windows 95 I kept it as long as I could.

  2. They are sort of expensive to just carry around, IMHO. It's not like a filter or belt that could easily be changed at the road side or in a rest area if required. (I'm sure they don't recommend that though).

Had I known the cost of the repair of my ECM/Wiring harness before it struck I most certainly would have had the harness replaced before it got to the ECM. I didn't and had to pay the price.

Keep an eye on the FB post, it's definitely getting attention, since we got it online.

Thank you if you were one of the helpers. Not sure why it was such a difficult thing.

I only have one computer that has FB on it. I will check it daily, but am not constantly on the site. I check this one more.

Those of you who know me, know that I tend to go down a different path than what's generally thought of as the norm.

So, watching my bride fight with the crappy little plastic fifth wheel lube disc, I thought to myself, "Self, there's got to be a better way."

One better way is to emulate what the commercial fleets do, and cover the truck hitch with plastic, or imbed pieces of plastic into the plate.  Dan Habermehl has done this and it works well.  I think Mark Blatchford has done it as well.

My way is to source some 1/8" UHMW-STS and cover the trailer hitch.  What's UHMW-STS?  It's UHMW that's impregnated with silicone.  The STS means Slicker Than Shi......Stuff.  That's straight from the fellow who developed it at Crown Plastics, in Harrison, OH.

I got most of the way done with it today, may finish and snap some pics tomorrow.

Can't wait to see the photos.

I just use the 5th wheel lube in a bottle. It's messy, sticky and when it's cold doesn't flow very well, but it works for me and the guy who told me about it. I take it yours's is a one and done (for a while) thing? Mine is an every time I hook up application.

I changed Steer tires again. I'd put what I thought were younger tires from my old truck to the newer (to Me) truck and then checked the date codes. Just a few weeks apart but a whole different size. Went back to the LowPro 24.5 all the way around on the new to me truck and now have a full set of 11R24.5 on the Old Truck.

While I had the tires off and the weight off everything I greased all the places I could find in the steering area. A guy told me that you should do that every so often to make sure all the areas get some new grease. If the weight is still on it all the time it could prevent the grease from flowing into the tighter areas. Seems reasonable.

  5. We all need new friends on occasion. Problem is when you want to find them you cannot. Friends are people who just seem to show up in your life and are unforgettable.

My Dad and my youngest brother seem to make friends quite easily, in fact no one they meet is a "Stranger", they could and can talk for hours and then didn't seem to know their names or any thing about them. Infuriated my Mother many a time. I'm more like her. I'm comfortable by myself. I have friends and people I know and keep contact with, but it doesn't have to be on a daily, weekly or even annual basis. My Friends know if they need me I'm there and that's all that matters.

Good luck with your search. Planet Fitness might be a place to hang out and see if a friend happens by.

Thanks for the post. I want to put a monitor system on my truck. But have Aluminum Wheels. I was under the impression that i just screwed on 6 sensors on each valve stem. Sounded easy enough.

    You are welcome.

I had the TPMS for a while, but so glad I converted to the Crossfires. As rickeieio mentioned. They do not inform you while driving that you may have a low tire, but if you walk around and look at them at every stop you will know if one of the tires is loosing air.

  7. Installed the "Cross Fire" tire pressure monitor/equalizers on the drive tires last weekend. Watched a few "You Tube" videos before starting and learned a few things. One of the things I wish they had mentioned is how to install them on the Aluminum Wheels with those tiny holes. I'd replaced the Aluminum wheels on my other truck due to the size of the holes and a "Valve Core" issue on one of my early trips North From Florida. Had a TPMS alarm, stopped removed the TPMS to put the pressure gauge on it to fine the "True" pressure and when I let the gauge come off the stem all I heard was a HISS,SSS,SSSSSS.  Could not get my hands or my valve core tool into the stem to address the Hiss, so a $1xx service call later the outer tire was removed, the valve core exchanged and I was back on the road. A couple of years later I put on my first set of Cross Fires. They have been on the trailer since she was new in 2013. May need to replace them when I mount up the new tires in the next few weeks.

Now for the solution to the inner wheel stem issue with the small holes and the 1/2 inch nut you need to tighten down on the stem.

A 3/8 drive 1/2 inch tubing Crows Foot that my local Auto parts store had hanging where I could see it.

From the You Tube videos I learned about anti Seize and Dielectric grease on a few fasteners. I didn't have a supply and neither did the shop, so that's why I made the trip to the parts store. I added the suggestion in the comments of one of the videos I watched. Haven't seen a response yet from the content creator.

  8. It happened Wed., Thurs.  and Friday. Moved what I thought were newer tires from the Gold truck to the White one and then replaced all drive tires. The fronts were 11R 24.5 on the Gold truck but Low Pro on the White truck. Had I been smart I would have looked closer at the tires and would have realized they were only a few weeks older and could have left them in place. I won't make the guys do it again. I'll wait for a nice cool weekend and get some exercise.

  9. This truck has been pulling an RV probably longer than it was used over the road (in years that is). It's not quite at a Million miles, but getting close.

The motor is the 465 Volvo D12. To my knowledge it's never had a major internal problem. I had to replace the ECU and the oil wicking wiring harness a couple of summers ago and the 10 Speed Auto Shift may need some attention, but currently the intermittent issue has not surfaced.

The truck was singled long before my owning. I extended the frame behind the axle and placed a 14 foot box on it to haul a Mini Cooper and then an Isuzu Vehicross. The big box was cut down to 10 foot when I purchased my Spacecraft Toyhauler and then a 7 ft. box had been on it most recently. The box has been moved to my new to me truck so you can decide if you want to go with a bed, a box or move the drive up to make it shorter.

I believe there was never a smoker in the truck. The interior is clean for its age and a single guy owning it for the last 12 to 13 years. I have lots of photos of it's various stages. I'll post a few here, but it will be easier to give access to my Google photos with a link. I will need to organize them a bit.

The truck is in Oskaloosa, Iowa currently and that's where a new owner will have to pick it up.  It has been registered through an LLC in Montana since very early in my ownership. The title is free and clear. I know of no accidents or damage to the truck.

  10. There may also be an issue of your water source. I spent my first winter in 2013 at a small "Ranch" in Wellington, Florida with my brand new home on wheels. Before long I started noticing a "Sulfur smell" while taking a shower. Turned out that the "Well Water" at the place caused the smell related to the anode rod in my water heater. I changed it out to another type, but the smell remained, mostly with the hot water. Several trips to the Culligan water place came back with water safe to drink, but I chose to use a local "Windmill" water source for all of my drinking and cooking water. I'd use the tap to wash,  brush my teeth, and shower, but not much else. I'm still mostly using big refillable bottles for coffee, drinking and some cooking.

Hope you find the source of the odor and are able to resolve the issue.

  11. If you are in a farming community, often the scales are left on after everyone leaves. To find out GENTLY pull on the scale and see if the numbers light up somewhere you are able to see them. Usually it's visible from inside the vehicle, but sometimes I've had to peek in the window (they shut off the outside monitor, but the inside was visible on the desk). Be certain to not pull on rapidly as an error can be triggered and the location may be forced to shut down the scale daily if it happens too often.

One time during normal business hours I had to pay $10 for a weigh. Next time I just walked in with a dozen donuts.

  12. An air ride hitch will move a lot more than a fixed hitch. That's the plan, smooth out the movements. The ET also has a multi axle movement where some are up and down mostly. If you are using both an air ride hitch and a hitch mounted device that may cause issues.

Henry may chime in here at some point also. Jack Mayer at RVH Lifestyles would answer quickly if you posted on Facebook. He doesn't hang here much anymore.

  13. There are many axle companies I think. Spacecraft used Ride Well for my trailer. They came with all the components attached to the axles including tires and wheels if I remember correctly. I wanted to supply my own tires and wheels but it was one of the very few times Marsha said no.

Mine has Drum brakes, but the newer ones have the option of disc. I would have gone with disc if I had the option. Will never wear the shoes out, but if a wheel seal goes bad you need to change them.

  14. I had one in my first truck for a while, but then it was stolen and the coax wires cut instead of unscrewed. The new to me truck has one in it and it also has a Weather Band so it's staying for at least that. I will probably turn it on 19 for my first trip, but it there is nothing there I will scroll through the channels to see if I hear anything.

Previously I would turn it on only during traffic tie ups to see what the issue was and if there was a lane to stay in that wasn't blocked. Been over 10 years so I truly don't know what I will find.

  15. Thanks for all the suggestions. I'm going to be busy this weekend and away from both trucks.

I won't be parting it out in an organized campground and probably not where it's currently sitting. I think I have some options, but haven't actually asked the parties yet.

I won't be letting any of the little stuff go until the motor at least is removed. Then I will be mostly certain the rest can go piece by piece.

It could be a very good truck for the right person. Finding that person is the hard part.

  16. I agree, a toyhauler is much more expensive and in my experience with the commercially available ones, don't last very long for a full time user.  That said, I wouldn't want to use a bumper pull trailer, unless I really had to, they are a pain to back and if not loaded correctly can get out of hand back there. Sure pulling with an HDT, you may not even feel that it's flopped over on it's side, but the damage will still be done. You will be happy it wasn't hooked up to a pickup and it's sort of out of shape too.

In my younger days I pulled a heavy construction trailer over many a mile with an International Travelall (remember them?) The lessons I learned with appropriate use of the trailer brake saved me several times. Some of my co-workers were not so lucky, but those Internationals were tough to turn over even with those heavy trailers on their sides.

Just my experience, yours and others may vary.

  17. I've decided to see what the Vanderhaggs company will bid for the whole unit. I've been to their location in Des Moines, Ia and actually got some parts for the Gold truck before from them. (lost a fuel cap, replaced an upper sleeper window  and there was a broken side marker when I first took possession of the truck). I sent the requested photos today. I'll try and post a link to some photos here.

I will share some of my experience that I encountered this spring on our truck.

The first thing I want Volvo owners to check. Does your hood seal, seal. If it does fine. But if it does not, it may leave water (rain or wash water) to run over your starter and ECM.

It is fairly simple to test. If you set a ladder beside the hood at the windshield area, then climb up and see if you can feel a gap between the hood and the seal in the middle of the hood area.

If it feels snug, maybe try to push a thin piece of cardboard in the space.

Water can cause un wanted problems.

I agree that water is not a friend of vehicles, but they are exposed to many forms and manners in which the moisture can be thrown, collected and poured.

Vern, can you post photos of what your concern is regarding the starter?

    Thanks,

Where is the truck located you are going to part out?

The truck is currently in Oskaloosa, IA.

The decision on parting it out hasn't officially been made yet.

I used the "Free Week" advertisement in "Truck Paper" and got no calls. Of course I didn't have any good photos. I hope to work on that this weekend.

The truck gave me some very good years and may well serve someone with a bit more mechanical knowledge well for many more years. It was time for a change and a fellow member had just bought a Class A motorhome and had his truck for sale.

Thanks for the patience in this. Once my decision is made I will post in the "for sale" area.

  20. It's getting closer. Have been told by several that it's better to sell it whole and let the professionals dismantle it. I haven't called yet find out if Vanderhaggs would even be interested. They are the closest Truck salvage yard to where it's parked. They have nothing currently in a Gen 1 Volvo, I'm not sure if that's by design or not.  I still have to finish getting it empty of my personal stuff and the trucks are several miles apart now for a bit. Once they are side by side again I will finish the moves. By early September I will have to make up my mind. I know it's a long time to wait, but having interest in only the interior door panels makes me think selling it whole will be better. Now If there someone who wants the motor, hood first then it will be nothing to remove the door panels. Just thinking as I'm typing.

They issue new plates every five years.  We've had two different plates so far, and will get our third different plates, too, when we do our registration this year.  I just got the plates logged into my memory and here we go again, having to remember new ones.😉

I started to answer with  Get Personalized and then caught the squinty eye. I didn't notice much changes in mine. Still had to put a sticker on the new Plate.

  22. Glad you made it Vern. If your trans is good, I've got a good Volvo 465 for you. To my knowledge no one has been inside except for an overhead. Hasn't used any oil except what ruined the ECM a couple years ago. That and the wiring harness have been replaced.
