Florence & September/Oct. Travels

FL-JOE

Recommended Posts

It turns out our timing wasn't very good for our final fall travel plans.  In a couple weeks we are headed back to the Smokey Mountains.  After that we were planning on wondering over to the Outer Banks and then down to Mt. Pleasant (outside of Charleston), before cutting back across to Mobile/New Orleans, then back to Florida for the winter.

We have made all the advance reservations.  We will be in areas where hurricane Florence will probably make landfall a couple weeks after the fact.  I guess we will just wait and see how bad the area gets hit.  It appears this years hurricane season will be both late and strong.

Join the club for the OBX. We have tried to go there 4 times, finally made it there last year. Had two days before the campground was closed for a  hurricane. Each time we have tried to go to OBX some big storm or something else happens.

We have decided it is not a place we are not suppose to visit.

Just talked to friend in Disputana, VA. who had reservations for Emerald Isle starting this Thursday. Last night the RV park/cg called and recommended they don't come. The park did make the statement that the money they had for the reservation would be good if they re-booked before a certain date.

I think I will let the reservations ride for now.  We will start looking at a "plan B" though, probably after we leave the smokies we will head out to New Mexico and/or Texas.  I suspect a couple of the CG's we were going to won't be open now for the next week or so.  I'll just wait until after that and get in touch with them to see what their local situation is.

It certainly looks like there is flooding and some damage to the Outer Banks area all the way down to Charleston, but maybe not as bad as feared.

I know it is hard sometimes to tell from watching the weather channel how bad it is because of those guys being good "actors".  We were watching the other day and the weather channel guy could hardly stand up while he was out there talking about how horrible the wind was.  A minute later in the background two folks were just walking by normal, one of them even looking down at his phone!

I guess to get the real "skinny" on the situation out there we will just have to call and talk to CG managers when our arrival time gets closer.

Give Eastern NC a week or so to clean up.  The Outer Banks will open as soon as power and water are back up. Their allowing residents in now to check property so it won't be long.  New Bern, Washington, south to Jacksonville, and Wilmington will be open as soon as the water drops.  This isn't their first rodeo and won't be the last.

KOA in New Bern will be out for a while, but it is a cash cow for the owners and will reopen as soon as possible.  It's the only commercial campground in town.

Washington NC- Twin Lakes- Chocowinity side- will take 2 weeks or so.  They have permanent residents that live there so it will be back up as soon as power and water are restored.  Since several Beaufort county commissioners live on that road, as soon as the water drops power is back.

Washington NC also has Tranters Creek Campground that most of it should have stayed dry.  Especially the hill area in the open- No shade.

Sounds like you are either close to that area, or are from that area?  So starting the second week of October we planned on being in Roanoke Rapids NC, then down to Rodanthe NC, then a week in Mt Pleasant SC.  In other words, about 3 weeks in October in NC and SC.   What do you think?

Thanks everyone for suggestions and help.  We came up with "plan B", researched the campgrounds and made reservations.  Head to Smokies this Saturday for about a week, then to Savannah GA for another stretch.  We kept the reservations in play for Mt. Pleasant (outside Charleston) and will head up there after Savannah.  Then back over to Alabama for a month before heading back to SW Florida for the winter stay.

We decided to do NC and all the way up the east coast early next fall, if there are no hurricanes that is.
