I just don't see a reason to leave it behind.  It's a great tool, for emergencies or just needing something.  I found myself three miles away on a mountain bike with a shredded tube, which I couldn't fix.  Sure, I could walk, but it was getting dark.  Having the wife ride out with the spare tube to my exact location...priceless...

And I'd never want her to leave camp alone without a phone.  Yes, that may be sexist, but she's tiny and not strong.
