Voting in South Dakota - 30 Day Residency Rule Up for Repeal

Recommended Posts

We are former fulltimers and now physically live in Custer, SD.  For those of you domiciled in SD - the state law on 30 Day residency may likely be repealed soon. The SD Senate passed a bill to repeal it this past week. This repeal is supported by the SD Secretary of State because of a variety of issues, some legal and some administrative. Here is a link to a full report from a very informative website:

I was not aware SD passed this 30 day rule last year. But good sense has now prevailed and many of you can vote again.

Kirk,

Thanks for the response. I did do a search on the Full Timing topic area before I posted and did not find anything. We have some really idiotic legislators in South Dakota. As you may recall, every 3-4 years some legislator decides to initiate a bill aimed at fulltimers. Then the rest of the legislature smacks him up the side of the head and reminds him (or her) of the free money SD receives from all these registrations and the legislation is killed.

On February 12, the SD House voted to repeal the 30 day residency rule for voting (69-0) after the Senate did the same thing last month.  Here is a link to the SD Legislative web page if you are interested in a deep dive; the actual bill is SB17:
