  1. What is Common Law Marriage: A Definition

    A common law marriage is one in which the couple lives together for a period of time and holds themselves out to friends, family and the community as "being married," but without ever going through a formal ceremony or getting a marriage license. Below are three of the common requirements for most states (note that just "living together" isn't enough to validate a common law marriage).

    1. You must live together (amount of time varies by state).

    2. You both must have the legal right or "capacity to marry".

    • Both must be 18 years old (varies by State).
    • Both must be of sound mind.
    • Both must not be married to someone else.

    3. You both must intend to be married.

    4. You both must hold yourself out to friends and family as being a married couple.

    • Taking the same last name.
    • Referring to each other in public as "husband," "wife," or "spouse."
    • Holding joint bank accounts / credit cards.

    We lived in Laramie County, WY for 18 years and neither Pam nor I were ever called for jury duty. We lived in Tarrant County TX for 11 years and I was called twice and served once, Pam was called once but didn't serve.

    I'm always a bit amazed by the way so many who advocate for all electric vehicles then whine about paying an extra fee to support highways, immediately after boasting about not paying for gasoline.   🙄

    The insurance estimated most cars get 15k miles per year and if they also got 20 mpg that would be $150 in TX gasoline tax at $0.20/gallon. They may be thinking of including the federal tax as well which the state highway department receives funding from which would then add an additional $0.183/gallon and would get pretty close to the $300 fee($287.25). Of course, all of this assumes that the authors of the bill understand basic math.

    All of this also ignores the federal mandates that cars keep increasing the mpg. The first federal gasoline tax was in 1932 at 1Ȼ/gallon and was to pay for the deficits from WWI. In 1956 the tax was 3Ȼ/gallon and has slowly increased. The federal tax is currently suspended through Dec. 31, 2023. 

    At some point there has to be a new source of funding for highways. Not only the increase in EVs on the road but average mpg was about 10 in 1950 and today is 25+ and many cars are like my little Jetta that gets 36 mpg in town and gets 42+ on the interstates. I believe that things like these are the reason we are seeing more and more toll roads and expect that trend to continue. 

  4. We owned a class A on the first generation V-10(1999 F53) chassis that we bought new and kept for 14 years, 12 of them fulltime. I sold it with 81,000 miles and last heard from the buyer he was about to trade it on a newer rig after owning it for an additional 6 years and it was at 128,000 miles and doing fine. The only major repair was a pinion seal replaced at 3 years and the second owner had the plugs changed at 102k. He indicated that it had been a great experience.

    I too would think that the "last chance to avoid an accident" rule would apply there. It didn't appear that he gave ground and one would think that he saw them coming. I tried to find something more about the accident as it would be informative to know what the result of any accident investigation might have been. 

  6. Daily distance traveled is a rather subjective thing. It is a good plan to stop traveling before you are tired and early enough to enjoy the trip. I drove much farther before I retired and shortest was when fulltime. Wind and weather should also be factors in the time that you travel. I suspect that you are much younger than myself. I would also keep the days shorter when you are just starting and then adjust as you gain experience. Today we usually limit to about 300 miles maximum but 400 is not unreasonable in good weather. 

  7. I would expect that your leveling jacks are 12V powered, as all of them that I have experience with were. Do other 12V appliances or the interior lights work without the generator running? Does your coach battery charge when you are driving? Do you have a volt/ohm meter that you can use to troubleshoot? It sounds like the camera is not getting power. Can you tell if the monitor is powering up? The backup camera probably gets it's power from the chassis battery and the alternator, as most of them are wired that way.

    There are several brands available but the two with the longest and best reputations are from Southwire and Progressive. You should also get models that do power monitoring and not just surges. Assuming that your new RV is a 30A model you need either Southwire 34930 ot the Progressive EMS-PT30X. There are other brands that are not as well known and other models from these two that offer additional features. You have a 30A RV if the power cord has 3 pins but it is a 50A model if the plug has 4 pins.

    As for driving the rig, be sure that your tow vehicle mirrors are adjusted for the best possible view of the traffic behind you. Double check the hitch is done properly before you drive. Keep in mind that you must swing wide in all turns to allow for the trailer as it will tend to cut corners. You haven't said how long the trailer is but keep in mind that trailers pivot on the axles so the rear bumper travels a wider arc than does the tow vehicle and front of the trailer so allow for that. Always drive watching well ahead and slow early for traffic lights and such to avoid over use of the brakes or hard braking. 

  9. Does Fusion produce radioactive nuclear waste the same way fission does?

    Nuclear fission power plants have the disadvantage of generating unstable nuclei; some of these are radioactive for millions of years. Fusion on the other hand does not create any long-lived radioactive nuclear waste. A fusion reactor produces helium, which is an inert gas. It also produces and consumes tritium within the plant in a closed circuit. Tritium is radioactive (a beta emitter) but its half life is short. It is only used in low amounts so, unlike long-lived radioactive nuclei, it cannot produce any serious danger. The activation of the reactor’s structural material by intense neutron fluxes is another issue. This strongly depends on what solution for blanket and other structures has been adopted, and its reduction is an important challenge for future fusion experiments.
