And once again, with 2 clerks and a Super/manager on the phone, was told that if it is not being used in a commercial manner (as I described my truck- registered as a truck>1ton being used to pull a 5th wheel RV

I thought this discussion was regarding an HDT (which a 1 Ton doesn't qualify as)?????

  2. Steve and Rick have said it pretty bluntly, and I agree, you have some homework to do!  Like you are finding out with the builders that you are working with, until you figure out the weights of what will be on the points of your measurements, not many will be involved with giving you a plan (and if they do, well there is no liability).

Sounds like you haven't been to a Rally yet (next one is in Oct), or read enough of the postings about bed builds, or looked in the Resource Guide.

It's homework time.   So how short is your trailer?????

  3. Padraic, yours could be close to mine.  1 compressor feeds both.  Yes, you could retire the one in the sleeper.  I know I would not want to retire mine though.  I have a lot larger sleeper (770) and we sometimes need to turn that a/c on to stay comfortable.

But will depend on how much of an issue getting in and out of it. My back does not like low to the ground seats.

Pete, getting in and out was the main reason I looked at these smart cars yeas ago.  It does not sit low at all!  Most sportier cars out there have real low seats in them, and that wasn't going to be for me.  The smart works just fine and I'm 6'2" tall.

  5. Glenn, that is kind of a confusing statement.  If you didn't get clearance under it, it wasn't raised up enough.  If you slammed it up, you still didn't have it raised up enough.

For anyone reading this still, slow down the unhitch procedure and let your leveling valves do what they do.  Watch for the gap between the pin plate and the hitch.

Let's assume the hitch is operating in it's sweet spot of about 50 psi.  When you unhitch, the head rises, and we would expect to hear a rush of air escaping, at 50 psi.  But in reality, your pressure is near zero, because you've removed the load.  Thus, the air escapes very slowly.  It's likely that the leveling valve is fine.

Better said by a farmer!  Or would that be former farmer?

  7. So we pulled into a campground at Canyon Lake, TX (just below the dam) late yesterday afternoon and the quick decision was made to wait until this morning to offload the smart.  Fired it up late morning to move the truck a few feet for the right angle to offload.   30 minutes later I am firing it up again to move back into position with the trailer---------and no start.  So I am immediately thinking thru all the threads I have read here in the past.  We have power, no bad connection at battery. The starter is engaging and is turning the motor over.  Just no start!  So I'm thinking fuel.  Popped the hood and pushed my manual primer plunger.  No start.    Looked at the fuel filter and didn't see anything leaking and no signs of wetness anywhere, and the plastic fuel bowl is half full.   Then I spotted it.   One large bubble came up from the bottom of the Davco unit.  Kept watching it and about 15 seconds later, another bubble!   I went around and pumped the primer again many times until I felt the push back of the fuel.   Truck cranked for about 3 seconds and started up!

So I'm thinking Things are not tight around the Davco unit, or I have finally had a failure of the check valves in the fuel system.  I thought I had read where this 2001 Volvo motor has 3 check valves, and maybe it's an age thing, but I'm not remembering where they all are at?

Any ideas guys?  I'm also hoping I can get to my next destination and check on the check valves there.   Obviously once it starts I don't have a problem, so I'm thinking I don't need to be involved with the truck this week, and can go on down the road.

Thanks in advance for your thoughts guys.

forgot pic of the Onan 8k diesel, sips from tanks and is very quiet. And it is working now! I think the 8k is quieter than the two Hondas.

Wow!  That is really quiet!  I can't even hear it!!!!😀

  9. I did have our mechanic look at the system and get prepared for a flush.  He was the first guy to hook up an air hose to the cap and pressurize the system.  Yep. You could just hear some bubbling happening in the upper driver side of the  radiator.  Replaced with plastic (or whatever it may be), $$420, and some thought it might be a PEX product.  That would be nice if it were, but probable not.  Replaced the thermostat and we will see how it does.

  10. Well, resurrect this one for a little while.

Just picked up my upper and lower hose, thermostat and associated gaskets and O rings.  A mechanic told me that the filter housing is leaking, but Volvo said it is probably only an o-ring and not the housing.  That's  good news - the housing is a $600 part!

Was told I should consider another flush (after the one when the injector cup failed) but to follow it up with water flushes at least 3 times before refilling with coolant.  $204 per flush.  Coolant and flush extra!

I'm going to nurse it back down to the valley and then consider what to do.  It used two gallons during a 1500 mile trip.  It did have a crack in the res. tank.  That was replaced in CA.  Hoping it's just the leak at the filter now.
