  1.    I am curious if your return air vents filters are clean.

If you have the circular vents, one side is cool air. The other side is the return air. They have a filter in them. Take a flashlight and shine up into the vents and see is they are clean or dirty.

If they need cleaning, just pull down on the center, while rotating just a tad.

Also if you have a thermal thermometer, you can see if your return cold air is 18 degrees or more colder than the return air.

Also has the rooftop AC units been cleaned on the fins in the last year.

Just some things to think about. Before getting your portable AC unit.

  2.    I just got it running again.

Removed the new wiring harness and installed a rebuilt ecm and hooked it up to the old wiring harness.

      Quite a adventure.

I am thinking of looking for a campground towards  Paducah Ky.

Really tired of crawling around the truck. If I found a place where I could install the new harness, I would think of doing it.

I must say there is a embarrassing thing I did.  But it will tank some time for me to admit it.

Thanks for all the help,    Vern

  3.      So I put in the new wiring harness. And a new rebuilt ecm. Motor cranks but not starting.

No faults showing. But then indicator light on the dash says no data transfer on the oil temperature sensor.

Installed the old ecm that is 2 weeks old. Still no data transfer for oil temperature.

No voltage to the plug connector. That was with the new ecm.  Will check in a little while if there is voltage with the old ecm in it.

So the truck ran fine since the rebuilt ecm was installed two weeks ago. Until it would start missing. Let it idle then it would run for awhile.

Let it high idle a few days ago for 3+ hours.   Never missed.

Would the engine run with that missing reading or not. Maybe the fuel needs primed,

Could one of the fuses be blown for the ecm.

         Thanks,    Vern

  4.    How did I double post a picture?

So the wire to the right side of the picture that has a bare wire connector looks like it should be a ground.

The old wiring harness does not have that wire. The truck is a 2000 Volvo with late 1999 Cummins n14 eclectic plus engine.

       Is this a ground connector.

      Thanks greatly,   Vern

  5.   We are Whites Creek atthe moment.

We an stay tonight yet. But need to be moving by our own power or by hook.

The ecm has 3 bolts holding it for a few minutes. Inside in ac cooling off. And eat something.

There is one ground wire that is on the new harness, that was not on the old one.   Just so reach and it looks like it should be grounded to the ecm base. I believe that those versions of Cummins engines had a ecm grounding problem. This is a new harness, so I think it is a update on the wiring harness..

if someone could correct me on this I would appreciate it.

i will post a picture of it in a few minutes.

      Thanks,    Vern

  6.       We may need towed to a campground with the fifthwheel. 43’ Teton.

Our Volvo 610 may need to be towed to a shop for repairs.

We have Coachnet. I have made contact with them.

If you have followed my truck repair situations over the last three months, this will explain some interesting things that can happen.

In my repairs to the Volvo, with a Cummins n14 in it, I hope what I have learned could help someone else in the future.

After a lot of talking to truck repair people and a ecm rebuilder. I ordered a rebuilt ecm. Installed it and the truck started up and ran great for say 200 miles. Now in my truck issues that we have had over the last couple months in South Carolina, one thing we had to experience was algae in the fuel.

We got just about north of Atlanta and the truck had a miss, then a few more misses until we stop and changed the fuel filters.

Did that several more times until north of Nashville Tn.       Finally had to stop and park. Fuel is not the issue. If the truck idles for 20 minutes, it runs fin for 30 minutes.

So I had a shop mechanic discover the the ecm lower plug if pushed towards the engine , the engine would start missing. Got permission to stay by day at a shop where we were at.    I talked to the ecm rebuilder and had another one shipped to where I am sitting. I also ordered a Cummins wiring harness for the engine. That was a real episode in it self. Not sure if it is the ecm or the wiring harness. But decided to put both in.

Harness did not show up till Friday , say 10:30 am.   I have it about 95 percent installed when I quit last night.

When this situation is over and I have calmed down, I will explain what installing a new wiring harness on a Cummins n14 takes. So if you find yourself in the same situation, I hope I have given you so good information.

If I cannot get the truck operating by noon or so , I will call Coachnet to be towed. We were told to be out of here by Sunday.

Looking for a campground recommendation. At this time we are not picky. I believe Coachnet will find us a campground to be towed to. Or what ever we can find.

       Thanks greatly,    Vern

We are about 5 miles north of the beltway, north of Nashville Tn.

  7.     I am tired.

Working on our Cummins n14.   Just got another. Rebuilt ecm this am

Was desperate for a wiring harness. Ordered one yesterday.   But there is no record of it in existence at the parts place. Ordered from Flagstaff. Called them     It is none existent in our system the parts person said.

Parts place just called. Said it would be there by 10:30 am.....

I have another one to be delivered tomorrow also.

Slow down and read,      I will.  I will.   Once I Rest up

  8.   I would suggest to clean all the battery terminals, while you are doing the hard reset.

While you have the batteries disconnected, test each one for there voltage while disconnected. Also doing a load test would determine if you have a bad battery.

If your batteries are below 12.3, and all the same basically. The 12.3 voltage is questionable as for my remembering things.    I would try and charge them with a separate battery charger, while doing the reset.

Another sign of a battery problem is if any feel warm while being charged. That could indicate a bad battery.

I really hope this helps you.

  9.      So today the truck started. At 6:30 . Did not do anything to it since last night. It run for two plus hours.

A shop mechanic stopped by. I told him I just put a rebuilt ecm in the system.

He grabbed the sensor connector and moved it towards the engine. Not much but some movement. It stated to miss.

So have another ecm being shipped and a new wiring harness for the sensors shipped also.

      Will keep you informed

  10.      So after treatment on the fuel in our Volvo.  It still had a problem.

The truck diagnostics said ecm problem.

So I talked to a ecm rebuilder. Decided to send the ecm to them. They rebuilt it and sent it back. Installed it.

So started the truck and it operated as it should.   Drove it several times on hilly roads. Cruise, jake and all dash displays work as they should.     So we left South Carolina headed to Atlanta Ga.    Tried cruise up hills and everything was working good.  No codes showing up.

North west of Atlanta it missed once. Then a few more times. Stopped and changed fuel filters.

It probably to 1 hour to get back on the road.

We did have to change filters two more times. We are north of Nashville at this time. Parked with 15 amp power to keep rv operating. No AC .

Talking to ecm rebuilder .  Going to do some testing this am. Will start the truck as is. No filling the fuel filters. See what happens.

What I am looking for is what the temperature of the ecm itself should read while operating. And what temperature the fuel should be coming out of the ecm cooling plate. The fuel tanks seam to be hotter than what I would expect. Will keep track of all info that I can.

Trying to determine if the ecm is bad.     The truck seams to operate for a few hours operating. Then things seem to have problems.

       Thanks greatly, Vern

  11.    Ray,

Thanks for your thoughts on my inverter.   With what I did was to leave the batteries disconnected for 12 hours.  That is how you do a hard reset on those RS style inverters.

Sometimes 20 minutes will work. Years ago Xantrex said it could take up to 24 hours of the batteries to be disconnected to do a hard reset.

Also when connecting the battery terminals back on the post. There can be a spark. More that you would like. But that is sorta normal. If it is more thenthings are probably not hooked up correctly.

Ours is now functioning as designed.

  12.    I cleaned the battery terminals. They could be the culprit.

Anyone know of a good rv tech in my area.

I hope that that hard reset worked. Or cleaning the terminals. Or both together will fix it.    So I turned the charger on. It is bulk charging now. The microwave light came on when flipped that breaker on. That is on the pass through line, as we are on shore power at the moment.

Fridge has been off for twenty minutes. I had it plugged it into the pedestal.  Time to go see if the inverter will work.

    thanks

  13.    Yesterday we were going to leave South Carolina. Finally have the HDT running good again.

All packed up and the inverter keeps going to a fault. It only needs to operate a residential fridge. Will have the ice maker off.

So I did a load test on the batteries, and they test good. Doing a hard reset on the Xantrex RS3000 inverter Charger over night. Terminals look clean. And no corrosion on the terminals. But will clean everything concerning the connections.

Then will see if it will reset.

But if it does not function properly. I am looking to find a inverter to install just for the fridge, so as to leave ASAP.

Our domestic fridge amp draw max is 7.2 when operating. But we do turn the ice maker off when inverter is on. I guess the amp draw should be 1/2 that.

So looking for some help,if needed to find the correct size pure sine wave inverter.

       Thanks in advance,   Vern

  14. I load my Jeep two with 7’6” ramps. Where they hook together in the middle, I can raise they jack stands up say 2” . That helps with the clearance situation

i will measure my total length of the ramps tomorrow. I think they are just over 14’ when put together.  I am going to load my Jeep tomorrow. So I can measure and get pictures also.

Also dumping the air gives some clearance with the hitch head..

  15.    Henry,

This only a suggestion.    Looking at the bed in the current production stage, I have a different thought.

Looking at the space from behind the rear wheels to the rear bumper. That is a lot of cubic feet of storage, that is just sitting there. If that area was utilized, not only could it contain the ramps, but there could be more storage space, just for the taking.

If the side panels were built to accommodate that space, from the rear wheel to the rear bumper.?    The storage area from the frame rail to the outside of the bed could give considerably more storage space.

With the proper doors for access.

It would also control road debris from flying up there. With a short mud flap on the front of the storage bin.

        Just saying
