  1. Lots going on for me these days.

    1. Several years of saving and lobbying she-who-controls-the-budget, I finally have concrete in the barn where the trailer and truck live!

    2. While the concrete is curing (30 days before I can put the truck and trailer in there) so I'm still chipping away at making all the lights on the truck work.  This is a dandy little turn signal, running, brake and reverse light that RVH's Jack Mayer turned me onto, so we have a bit of an upgrade along with all the repairs.  There are still many more Boogey Light strips to mount and wire, but we're on the way...

    3. The final item is a little work on myself.  I had a little minor surgery to remove a bit of skin cancer on my nose during this whole time too.  (Everything went fine and I'm good)  I definitely won't add a photo of that...
    1. Did they ever import a manual transmission Smart to the US?  If so what years?
    2. What years were the diesel Smarts available in Canada?  Are they old enough to get one into the US?

    A friend of mine invented these.  Creighton designed them for aircraft usage.  They are spendy for sure, but they really are the best.

    True story.  Back in the early 70’s wife and I were flying Texas International Airlines from Wichita Falls Texas to Dallas Fort Worth on an old Convair turboprop.  As we started to takeoff the left engine cowl started flapping.  We aborted takeoff, taxied back to the start of the runway.  A maintenance guy came out, climbed a ladder and using baling wire and twist pliers cinched the cowling down and away we went.  I’m sure the FAA would have had a field day with that had they known.

    You'd be surprised at how many aircraft are held together with "safety wire".

    Then forums like this became more convenient and efficient for sharing information.  
     

    Now Facebook, with all of its inherent problems, is the choice of most people for the sharing of information.

    And yes, all tires were checked just 100 miles before the incident.

    So, my solution (for now) is to run much heavier tires than originally spec'd, check before each trip, and drive on. YMMV.

    Do you still run a monitor?

I was just discussing this topic with the DW this afternoon and her comment was that she thought she remembered someone, possibly at the ECR (?), who was saying that they did not like having a monitor system for some reason.  She couldn't articulate what was said but there was some sort of down side to a having a system.

    Does this ring a bell for anyone?

  8. I've been spending countless hours scraping off 3M two sided tape that held on LED strips.  The best results are a rubber eraser wheel, then 3M 8489 adhesive remover solvent soaked towel, then scrape some more, then repeat...

    The Jackalopee thread also inspired me to remount mine a little better in the driver side Jockey box.  This will also allow for a second bus-bar for the additional tail light outputs for the remodeled "safety lights" on the drom and rear farings.

    I will have to abandon this project for a little while for another major project, that's been a long time coming, that takes priority.  I'll be pouring a concrete pad, 42 x 85', in a few weeks, in my pole barn where the truck and trailer live.  It will be so nice, not to have to try to work on gravel any more...

    Has been one of my concerns also but I was only going to put them on trailer tires which are short stemmed metal.  BTW for information only, I just upgraded my tires on the trailer to Continental HTL  235/75/r17.5s instead of 215s. They are pricey but 18 ply J rated (75mph) with max load capacity of 6800 (vs G114 4800) lbs per tire.  Did it on suggestion from GeorgiaHybrid.  Had my first 1000 mile pull with them recently and might be subjective but seemed to pull better than my G114s.

    I was trying to decide if I wanted the 12 $ensor set or just the 6 on the trailer.  Do you have any monitor system on your truck?

    When I converted to 17.5s, I went with 245-70R17.5 J-rated tires that were recommended to me by a friend who runs this size on his low-boy.

Our first 5er was a Keystone Carbon toy hauler (The Raptor is one grade up from this).  It was admittedly more of an entry level trailer.  IMO the build quality was terrible.  Very cheap in every aspect.  It was a 2016 year and by 2021, we were constantly playing the "where did this part fall off from" game every time we set up.

    Our current trailer is a Grand Design Momentum toy hauler.  Its quality is better by a good margin from the Keystone.  It isn't what it should be but that is the nature of the industry...  We like the trailer and have chosen to make it a long term relationship by investing in some upgrades:  MORryde IS suspension and upgrade to 8500# (from 7500#) per axle, air over hydraulic brakes with electric backup and a rather substantial solar/lithium install.  We'll never get that money back out of it, so it's ours for a while.

  11. We’ve been running our rig since 2017.  We have yet to be turned away or needed to park the truck separately.  Just a bit of recon with Google satellite view before you book and alls well. 

    Our first 5er we were about 65' OAL.  With the "new" trailer we are just shy of 70'.

    Thank you, Chad.  I will keep this in mind.  I'm an in-depth researcher so I need to educate myself on these systems and see what I'm looking for before I jump into anything just yet.  I won't be doing any traveling for a couple months yet, so I have some time.

  13. Watching Dave and Karen's latest adventures made me think.  I don't have a tire monitor system.  I know asking this is dangerous, like asking what oil is best, but here goes:

     

    What tire monster system do you have and why do you like it?   I'll need to monitor 6 tires on the trailer.
