  1. Here's an RV I thought you guys might find interesting. 😁

Finally got the images working. The translated text from the ad reads:

An exclusive BMW model, there are none even in the BMW Museum in Munich, the condition is excellent, all parts are original, the mileage is original, there are no painted parts. Camping original, this model has a limited edition. Everything works at the campsite.

Every major supermarket chain is hiring - yes they aren't high paying jobs, but they are jobs.  Albertsons (Safeway), Kroger, Walmart, etc. are all hiring.  Hard work, yes.  Needed work, YES.

We're talking about deaths.  Are you ok with that?   And younger individuals are dying.  If you want to be able to survive, there must be treatment space/supplies available.  Flattening the curve does that.

Why do so many people question the science?

BTW, lots of older folks will survive the disease.   My cousin's 70 yr old husband has just recovered.  They live in Washington State.   He said it was more of a heavy, heavy cold for him.  But he has NO underlying health problems.   And a lot of people who are older (or younger) will survive if they get supportive treatment, including ventilators to ensure enough oxygen gets to the body.    If everyone had started the social distancing practice in January, the outlook would be quite different.

Yes, this will go in waves until a vaccine is developed. Each wave will have fewer people infected because we will have more people with antibodies to the virus, thus they will not spread the disease.    After a vaccine is developed and in use, we will all sit and watch the anti-vaxxers try and convince people they don't need the vaccine, so it will continue to circulate through the unvaccinated individuals like measles, etc do now.

But you should know it's not as simple as that. They make a flu vaccine each year and yet mutations create new strains so it never really goes away. Influenza and COVID-19 are both RNA viruses so they have high mutation rates. There's a real possibility new strains of COVID-19 will emerge and this will become an on-going multi-year struggle to stamp out this virus. You're smart enough that you must be aware of this possibility but I suspect you left it out because it doesn't fit your argument. 😉

And the banter about cars being towed south, with all of its connotations, have what to do with pulling a toad behind an RV?

I don't know if it is legal. Just pointing out it is commonly done - and with significantly smaller tow vehicles than the OP is talking about.

And you determined that how?   You can't see the supplemental braking system we have for our toad - it sits beneath the navigator's seat.  There is nothing visible from outside.

These were cars/pickups towing other cars/pickups, usually both somewhat wrecked. Yesterday we saw many groups of 3 or 4 of them headed towards Juarez.  I'm guessing they are transporting them into Mexico or Central America.  Technically they could have had braking systems but I'd bet anything they didn't.

  5. Here's the one we are thinking of getting.  Any advice appreciated.  It is only for camping and trips, not living in.  Yes, it's a cheap trailer for the price.  No slides.  And it's new but a 2019 model.  We really weren't planning on buying new but the price isn't that much more than the slightly used ones we are seeing locally.

    2019 KEYSTONE HIDEOUT LHS 262

ETA: We didn't get into negotiating price.  I'm thinking they won't come down much farther but don't know.  They are offering to sell a 'starter kit' and sway hitch with it.  I'm guessing those are marked way up.  I might buy those extras later - still thinking about which way is best.

Do I need a sway hitch even with a big truck like my F450?  If so, will most any sway hitch do or are there certain types for certain trailers?

Also a 5th wheel will cut corners more than a TT so tight turns could be an issue but overall they are easier to manuever.

So this is one thing I wondered about.  Are the length restrictions due to the size of the campground sites or the curvy, twisty nature of the roads going into the park?  I guess it would depend on the NP, but I'm thinking if most parks allow 27' TT's then the road shouldn't be too tight, right?

I have never been questioned about the length of our RV or measured by the staff at any park, national, state,or county.

Interesting.  So would you agree with my assessment that a 30' (or so) 5th would be easier to drive & park in confined areas than a 25' TT?  I've never pulled a 5th so it's all conjecture on my part.

  8. A little background so this makes sense:  I have decided to continue working for another three years before retiring.  We are therefore thinking of buying a relatively small travel trailer to vacation in during that time.  I figure we will get about a 25' TT so that we can stay in national parks.  I know the limits vary but that should enable us to stay most places.

The thing is, it seems like a small 5th wheel (say about 30') would actually be a more compact combination and easier to maneuver than a 25' TT.  I just want to make sure that lengths in NP's aren't measured differently depending on 5th/TT.

If a NP specifies a 27' length, then a 30' 5th wouldn't be allowed even though part of it is over the truck when towing?

  9. So I see things from the other side - we have rented the last 3 houses we lived in.  They've all been about 10 years old, give or take a couple years.  You would never know it from looking at them, though.  The wear and tear on rental houses is pretty horrendous.  The houses we've rented have had all kinds of low-level damage.  I'd never consider renting a house after seeing what previous renters have done to the houses we've lived in.

And you figure the houses we've rented have been relatively expensive.  I suspect the cheaper rentals get a lot more abuse.

OK... after about two hours on the phone with Verizon last evening (and discussions with my wife in between phone conversations, etc.), here's what we did:

Not being on a "grandfathered" unlimited plan (we were on a New Verizon 24GB plan), my wife REALLY wanted me to move the MiFi (6620L) over to the prepaid unlimited plan. It took two calls to get it done, but the second prepaid support person I got hold of had just been trained on the new plans and it took him less than 5 minutes to do it - $65/month unlimited/unthrottled for the MiFi. During the conversation with him, I was talking about lowering the data on our post-paid plan for the phones. The tech asked why we didn't just move the phones to a prepaid plan quoted a number that was significantly lower than it was going to be on the post-paid plan and with three times the data for each phone. It seemed like a no-brainer. We now have everything on a prepaid plan for about $90 less than or total post-paid plan was and with unlimited data on the MiFi.

During the process I expressed to my wife the concerns I share with some of you above - namely, what if Verizon decides to change the prepaid plan since there is no contract? She instructed me to say this on the forum: "I would not have agreed to sell the house and hit the road full-time if I had dwelled on what-ifs and worried about what might have happened. Just switch the plan and let me enjoy the unlimited data!" Now you know who's really in charge in our family...

    Rob

PS - the knowledgeable person who finally got this done quickly and flawlessly gave me his business cell number: If anyone is interested, PM me.

I'm confused on what you are getting and how much it costs.  Are you getting two cell phones and unlimited MiFi for about $94 (184 - 90) per month?

  11. I have previously towed a UHAUL that I was worried about being stolen while at hotels.  I got a driveway chime like this:

    https://www.harborfreight.com/wireless-driveway-alert-system-93068.html

When I parked, I discretely tie-wrapped the sensor to the bottom of the tongue pointed downward.  Then I put the sensor on the nightstand next to where I was sleeping.  That way, if the trailer is moved the chime (alarm) will go off.  Of course, you need to park the trailer within 200-300 feet of your room so we selected a hotel with that in mind.
