Thanks, my jakes do work, so might be a bad ecm

I don't have a Jake but now with the new ecm I leave the cruise switch in the on position even when I shut the rig down.....I forget to turn it off.  But when I start things up the cruise is on but not engaged.  I just set it when I get up to speed.

If the cruise will not engage the first thing I would try is to lift the brake pedal with my toe and try to engage the cruise then. If that works it is an adjustment of the pedal (I forget what the switch is but if the pedal is to low the cruise will not engage). I had that problem and I put a small bungie cord around the pedal to hold it up until the adjustment can be made. Just a possibility.

I agree check the switches on the Clutch and brake peddle. And if you have jakes they should not work also. Being there tied into the curse. Can you still use the high idle? Set the cruse and bump down on the set switch. And you should still have high idle.

If its not the switches, but 95% of the time its one of those. Some times it can be the jake brake wiring harness. Where it goes into the valve cover.

If your getting the fault for the batter in the ECM. There's a guy that can replace those. But most times, people just get a rebuilt ECM. Is it the DDEC-3 or 4?

Suitesuccess.  I can't say for sure on the modern trucks but I do know that the 1997 Volvo with the Detroit s in them have a  battery in them that from what I was told, can't be replaced.  That came from a reliable friend and long time truck mechanic.

We tried changing things on the computer but to no avail.  I ended up taking the truck to the specialist on these motors.  They couldn't fix it so they replaced it.  $3500.  Now I've got my cruise control back and it works great.

I found this post from awhile back when my cruise started acting up.  If the battery in the ecm is going bad you will probably have to send the ecm out for repair.

  5. I had the same issue on my 97 Volvo WIA64 about 18 months ago.  Had several technicians look at it and they had everything hooked up to computer and all that.  Finally ended up taking the truck to guys who worked on Detroit diesels only.  They chased it down to a faulty ecu.  They changed it out and I've been back an forth now from California to Sturges to Yellowstone and all places in between.  Runs like a champ.  It cost me $$$$ but it was really worth it.

    Howdy All,

A while back I started a thread concerning having flames put on the Pete, the discussion covered the pros and cons of paint verses vinyl decals, how to do it and so on.  I found a vinyl decal company out east that will work with you to get what you want, we emailed back and forth for a couple months I sent sketches, they sent mock ups of what it would look like on the truck in different color combinations, when it looked right to me I ordered everything.  While boondocking in Arizona last winter it was warm enough, dry enough to give this a whirl.

I tried to contract with a local who made and installed vinyl decals to install the decals, because he didn't make them he wouldn't install them, understandable I guess. So I started to watch youtube videos of how to do this, I was quite intimidated by the large decals that would go on the Hood and the side of the sleeper, so I started by installing the small ones on the doors and then moved on to the large ones on the Hood and sleeper.  I think it turned out well.

The drivers door.  There is a matching decal on the passenger side door with "Mrs. Cob" on it.

    Very very nice job.

  7. Hi all.... we've been in lockdown since 3 March here in Eastern NC.  I have friends who are mission essential here...heavy towing and truck repair.  I check in with them every couple of days.  They tell me they're doing fine.  We are fine but I stay busy taking care of the house and property.

If we need to go to the store for anything, Wendy usually does that... she's hi speed low drag and in better shape than me.  You all take care out there.  Wishing you all well.

  8. I have a Hensley hitch for my Grand Design  Imagine 2800 which I best can remember is like 10k lbs.  I also use a Hensley for my Heartland Cyclone which I use a Volvo HDT to pull it.

Both hitches run about $3000.00 or so each.

    Folks,

It is with deep regret that I am announcing the cancellation of the 2020 East Coast HDT Rally due to the continuing spread of the Coronavirus in the U.S.  As a retired physician I prefer to deal in facts, not media hype but in listening to leaders in the healthcare field from the National Institute of Health, CDC, and others it has become evident that the group at most risk for serious complications is the over 60 age group especially those with comorbid health issues.  I am hoping I am being overly cautious but would much rather take this route than have any of my friends contract the virus and suffer a serious complication.
Several folks have already indicated they intend to keep their reservations at Deer Run but understand there will be NO formal scheduled activities or seminars.  I have informed Deer Run of the cancellation and they will be issuing refunds for any deposits already posted with them minus a processing fee.  If you DO NOT plan on keeping your site, please notify them at deerrunrvresort1@gmail.com to process your refund.  I have nothing to do with their timing of processing.
T-shirts have not been purchased so I will begin processing full refunds for rally registrations and t-shirt orders in the next week.  If you have not received a refund in two weeks, please notify me at ecrcarl@gmail.com.
Again, I regret the necessity of this decision but stand by it for the welfare of all.  Hopefully we will be able to resume the rally next year.  Emails have been sent to all registrations and posting has been made on Facebook.

    Well stated Doc.

Thank you for explaining this.  Great info.

Your 2000 VNL and my 1998 will have the same harness.  Most of the time all the wiring was the same with fuses or solenoid relays installed to power the circuit.  If heated seats were an option, there should be a fuse or solenoid in the fuse panel area.  What would be safest, would be to run a new wire, fuse, and switch.

What a difference a year makes.  I had an air line for my old seats but no circuits or wires.  So like you said..I came off the fuse panel.

  11. Roy...I installed my seats last year on my 1997 WIA64,. Just like your seats.  I ended up running a hot wire from my fuse box under the carpet to each seat with an inline fuse for each seat and put auto connectors on the end to be able to remove my seat if need be.  It just looks neat and clean even though I can't see it.  Hindsight if these pin connectors come loose I'll just put a crimp connector on.

    Hope this helps.

Spiders are attracted to the odor in LP gas and will build a nest in the mixing tube and orifice. When you clean these, do not use hard metal as it can scratch or mar the surfaces, which disrupts the fuel flow and burners flame size and shape.

had the same problem and found mixer tube plugged with spider or wasp nest. cleaned it out no more problem

Yeah....update on soot problem....cleaned the flame tube and found maybe 6 to 8 roasted stinkbugs in the burner tube.  Reassembled everything and beautiful blue flame.

I want to tell all of you thank you so much for your help.

    Thanks again

As those previous replies have said, the soot is from air/gas mixture not burning completely. In most cases a through cleaning will resolve the problem. Not all of the air mixtures are adjustable so do the cleaning first.

The first picture is of the Atwood burner which is adjustable. The second is of a Suburban burner tube and it is not. If yours is Dometic it should be the Atwood as Dometic bought them several years ago. Note the screw on the side away from us along with the sliding tube with slots in it. Both types are easily removable but use care to put them back in the previous location. While you have it out, use a vacuum to suction the burner area as well.

Thanks Kirk....this pix is what my water heater looks like.  Now all I have to do is vacuum and lean out the air.  Thanks to all of you guys.

Everyone have a safe and Happy New Year.

soot is usually caused by an incorrect air/gas mix - usually insufficient air.

There should be an aadjustable slider on the gas line to admit the air - or you may have a spider or wasp nest blocking the airflow.

Thank you Sir.  This will be of help.

  16. I have a Dometic 6 gal water heater on my 2019 Grand design Imagine that we used over the Christmas holidays.  When we broke camp while doing my prelaunch walk around, I noticed black soot all over the exhaust vent on the water heater and soot on the siding as well.  Yes we used it several times but for the most part we just used the electric hot water feature.

When I got home, I dug out all the info that came with the appliance that was with the TT when we purchased it 5 months ago.  There was nothing in any of the paperwork that discussed this issue.

Perchance could anybody have experienced the same thing and if so what was the cause and how did you correct it.

    Thanks in advance.

  17. Dan I use a Hensley TS3 for the road tractor when I haul the toy hauler, rating is I believe 20 or 24k.  I use the Hensley Arrow on the f350 to haul my TT. Witch is a lot less weight rating.

I first used the Anderson super hitch when I first started out.  It was fairly economical,  very light weight and very strong.  This hitch was ok for local jonts but when we did a couple cross country it beat the hell outta of us and the trailer.  At the time the TS3 came about I remember hearing about the Henry's ET hitches and I don't know anything about them.  The TS3 has served us well.

Best of luck on your hitch hunt and have a Merry Christmas.
