I suppose it would only be fair if CA/NV/AZ/NM/TX paid Colorado for all their snow melt as well.

    I think I see a storm a-brew'n................

Shucks ya Rickoo count me in on those donations as well......shucks since the old Jet Commander was recycled into Vegan-juice-cans I have too much money keeping me busy....  I thought Dolly the horse would keep me poor but ya know a zillioaire once told me late one night shooting a approach to land in a blizzard...  He said..."You know, poor folks have NO CLUE how much work it is to be rich!"

Well Komrades get to work .... Help the poor Komrades out .

Gas in Oslo, Norway just went over $9 bucks per gallon, the rest of the "socialist" bunch in Europe Sweden, Netherlands, Denmark, Greeks, etc, even Germans are between $6-8 per gallon. So Kalifornia, isn't there yet, but it's working on it, your "leaders in Sacramento" have the blueprint.

You are just not seeing the "bigger picture", I for one, being as sophisticated as I am, can see it all the way from Florida. $6.20 per gallon contains "special assessment" to pay for the Rapid Response squads for turd removal in LA and Frisco.😫

Well pontificated Comrade..... Of course as long as we are predicting the RED-future we might take into account the latest "Export of knowledge from Kalifornia to Never-add-dah" just across the state line East...... The Nev-rep-crooks passed a bill this week that requires a water meter be installed on every residential water well and the Comrades will "all-wow" up to a 1/4 acre ft of water use.......OR.....you "could" join the water utilities group and use ALL the water you can BUY from.......yep you got it ...... A Kalifornia water company...

Ya know I used to make up a tale once in a while but lately I can't even come close to the crap in ....un-reality, non-fake-news.

DISCLAIMER: Obviously 99 percent of the huge water pool under the Nev. PahRump valley should belong to Kalifornia since the snow melt in the Serria mtns sneaks over to Nev. So us rich Comrades should pay our Kali-Comrades just because.....they need the$$$$$$

Come to think of it Comrade-Henry as I recall you folks in the Sunshine State have a lot of water and much likely belong to your Bro-Kali-Komrades (nice ring)......

In a bad debt once I obtained a ownership share in a old Jet Commander.....what a great old kerosene-queen..... climbed well flew nice and at climb power the mechanical fuel flow meters spun so fast that you could not read the 10 pound meter rolls.....nice feature is that one day we had to return back to the airport with a passenger med problem and it was so easy to just follow the black smoke trail back to the Santa Monica airport ......oh yes that day we incurred $280 noise fines .....TWICE.......darn that old Commander sure kept my wallet light....

    Drive on.......(enjoy the Golden State.....Komrades)

  3. Two days ago blasted off from Last Chance Peak to Lone Pine Kalifornia / Alabama Hills Horse boondocking..   fueled at Smith's in Pahrump at $2.49 gal Diesel and a hour later as we drove through Furnace Creek Death Valley Diesel was listed at only $6.20 Gal.....boy oh boy bet at that price it's got to be OLD diesel in that pump.....it was a nice cool 98f at Furnace Creek and the trans temp climbed all the way to 150f during the 5000 climb out of Stovepipe Wells....

Plenty of F16 jocks buzzing Dolly in the horse trailer but she was busy attacking the hay net so she just waved her tail at them.

Great weather at Lone Pine and Diesel is cheep at Only $4.70 gal here...  Welcome to Kalifornia.....

Drive on.......(don't run out of Diesel in ..... Kalifornia)

One thing to note. No matter what electronic solution you use, it is not going to be perfect. Even the Co-pilot that I use is not perfect, and it is by far the best dedicated gps application I've used. SO we use multiple devices. Typically we run the CoPilot on the android tablet, then run Google Maps on my phone, which sits next to it. Danielle runs Google maps as well (cause she likes it) and uses a paper map. We also have a Garmin 760 RV model that we rarely use, mainly because it is a pain in the butt to program for a multi-stop trip. That is just what we do...it may not work for anyone else.

Over the course of too many decades have used most modern and a few stone-age navigation sources with mixed results.

Electronic nav aids have been the rage in aviation from around the 1920's on and some pretty amazing stuff is installed in glass cockpits these days..........I get spoiled........and have to remind myself that I still need to practice non-electronic navigation........

Being a geezer I still pack a bunch of paper charts just in case..........but even paper can be fleeting at times.

Too many moons ago I had a relationship with a aviation group that provided air ambulance services to very remote locations in S. America.......they had a few modified Cessna 185 aircraft with modifications of Lyc. TSIO-540 350 Hp turbo intercooled engines for operations over and around the Andes........There was no GPS back then and the only remote electronic aids was an occasional NDB (Non Directional Beacon) that would run off a old 12 Vdc car battery IF the battery was charged and we would just home into the beacon with a ADF (Automatic Direction Finder) that was simply a AM radio with a compass dial that pointed at the tuned in beacon......sorta.........

It was late afternoon and a radio relay message came in that a young girl was badly burned in a gas can fire and it was vital that the girl need to be Med-vac to a hospital ASAP........Weather was marginal but flyable so a Dr and a nurse got aboard and off we flew into some fairly grim turbulence but we made fair time to the remote location and quickly loaded the patent and took off into a mountain pass that I knew would be a pretty wild ride but even though the wind was bad the clouds were broken and a full moon allowed good outline of the pass, cliffs and ridges that we would thread through ............When the high winds flow over high ridge lines and the winds forced over the peaks and ridges often for lenticular clouds (those clouds that often look like giant flying saucers) this is associated with a condition called the mountian wave. Associated with the mountian wave is another group of clouds just downwind from the lenticular clouds these downwind clouds are called rotor-clouds. Flying upwind of the lenticular cloud will result in a very smooooth and strong uplift climb and then as you pass over the midsection of the wave you will sink in the downwind section of the wave and then……….slow down and cinch the harness tight because the rotor is very rough as in overstress the aircraft rough if you fly too fast into the rotor……...I warned the Doc and nurse to strap in tight that we were about to hit rough air and sure enough it hit very hard and all was as expected until……...pilot side door window latch popped undone and the window flew wide open and pasted itself up against the bottom surface of the wing and ……….SUCKED every chart and approach plate paper right out of my knee board paper clamp……….in a split second…….poof…...GONE all of my local Navigation…...POOF……

Of course just getting the window closed as the old 185 bucked and flopped around was no easy task and by the time I get the window closed and glanced at the pale white Doc it looked like the Doctor was in need of a doctor…….

The only thing that was in our favor was that I had reviewed the charts fairly well and the weather at the destination airstrip was not too low a ceiling after we were able to let down through a couple thousand feet of clouds and I knew the NDB frequency by memory……..

Sometimes it's best to take a good gander at the charts ……..before you take off……..

Drive on………….(don't drive too fast with the window…….open)

    P. S. it took a long time and a lot of care but the Doctors were able to recover the girl but it took a lot of skin grafts and more time but she has done well last I knew……...Last time I saw the Doctor some of his color had returned……..but he still does not like to fly…….hummmm

    Hello all:

Due to a sport I am in I do a lot of traveling into California for the weekend. I normally leave at 3:00 a.m. on Saturday morning, for Delano, and return around 1:00 a.m. Sunday Morning to Vegas. Last weekend on 58 headed home we learned of a rig that had gone over the mountain side and was being picked up by cranes a piece at a time. I pulled into a Denny's / Flying J just off of Merced Ave, in Bakersfield California, I sat in a booth and was talking to my wife about alternate routes. I had one ear open and was listening to the two guys in the booth behind me. As the meal progressed I figured they were long haul drivers, so I asked them if they were. I asked them if they had heard what had happened and we talked about that for a while. Then we got to talking and I told them about my 780 and showed them pictures of it, with my trailer hooked up. One guy asked if I had a CDL and I told him where I was in the process. I told him I had passed my written and that I was going to school this summer to get the rest. The person I was talking to had about 20 years on me and I walked away with a few golden nuggets of information from him. Some of the things that really jumped out was how interested he and his friends were about the conversion from the commercial to private or RV. They loved the research I quoted to them from the site. Not one guy made a wise crack about "Do you think you have a big enough truck????" It was pretty much in agreement that the semi is the right tool for the job. I know I will never be a long haul driver any time soon, but there is always retirement. They were all really friendly and nice, not a single condescending remark from any of them. We got back on the road and by that time the road was clear.

Also does anybody use WAZE app. This app has nothing to do with pulling trailers or stuff like that but what it does is, it is a live app with its users tuned in and able to post on it. So just like google maps you type in where you are going and it sets up a route for you. If a user sees a car on the side of the road or a speed trap they record where they are and it goes out to all users who are logged in. If there is a wreck and a road closure, like we found out about above, it lets you know and automatically plans an alternative route for you, it also highlights the area of the road which is closed so you can see where it is and how to get around it. Members talk about alternative routes and once again it routes you around. By the time we got done eating I looked on the app and the road was open. I had not known about this until my CC teacher told me about it on Friday, I used it for the first time this weekend it was great.

I am currently shopping for the Best GPS for the Big Rig, I want a large display, I am both near and far sighted. Which is the favorite for those of you on the forum.

  7. Trade-offs........Jack often mentions trade-offs because the RV gig is often so many different things to each RV owner/ operator.....even within a married couple ......I get a hoot out of many of the comments from guys on the forum who are scared-little-boy-toy-slaves who just cringe trying to keep the wife happy with a mobile-manson with Five-$lides, bath & 3/4 and Bluetooth toilet lids and wifi window shades.......NOT me......heck no......shucks whatever Dollymama ....thinks..... Dolly-tha- paint-horse....Might want / need is ALL I have to do.......that's all.....

Yesterday we took a wonder-2-Tecopa Hot Springs to soak our ancient bones and we rattled to the springs in the Dollytrolley v2.05 motorhome and parked next to a tiny Scamp 5er eggshell trailer.....the Scamp owner was so proud of his new electronic fireplace that he forced me into his bat-cave to look at the fireplace in operation.....he had to hop up on to the overhead bed so there was enough room for me to see the fireplace.....it was nicely installed....he was as happy as a pig-in-mud AND he gets 16MPG towing.....more pig-in-mud-trade-offs.....

So not to be outdone I forced the Scamp owner to climb up into the Dollytrolley to look at the new herringbone plank flooring that we just cobbled in to replace the carpet......he gazed in awe as Dollymama was walking around the full size massage table in the living room and commented......"OMG with ALL this room....do you folks ever get lost"?

It's a hoot.....if all our tanks are full they weigh more than his Scamp full..... trade-offs......

My biggest complaint is the number of axles.  I have a 42’ DRV (40KSSB4 model).  I tried very hard to get DRV to build it with a third axle, but they would not do it.  They will do some custom work, but nothing that extensive.  The next size larger DRV from mine comes with a third axle, but nothing my size or smaller does.  A New Horizons unit of the same size as mine (or even shorter) will have three axles standard.  My trailer does have dual 9k lb rated MorRyde IS, so it isn’t exactly running on light weight gear, but I would really like it to have a third set underneath it for stability and carrying capacity.

I do not have a dog in this fight, but, having done a fair amount of Weight & Balance calculations on several DRV units I can state that the tankage (fresh, grey, black, propane) in the DRV often has the POTENTIAL to overwhelm the listed legal carry capacity (payload) of the units with minimal food and personal gear in the units.

The POTENTIAL non-tankage-payload limitation is further compromised by the fact that is somewhat difficult to obtain a normal Balance due to the fact that the DRV tends to carry fairly light percentages of pin weight relative to the total weight of the unit since the majority of DRV owners need / desire to tow with pickup trucks that are load limited to near max even with the fairly light pin weight common on many DRV units.........

    Did Jack mentioned....... trade-offs.........

Of course with careful weight management one might keep fresh, grey, black and propane levels low to save weight for somewhat higher payload potential however .........how low do you want to go with your tanks????

Chad hits the nail on the head........more carry capacity (3rd axle?) and better balance would be nice.......

I'm really sorry that I seem to have offended you. That was certainly NOT my intention. I haven't got it all figured out, at all. That's why I came here looking for advice!

C-L-V..........rest assured that my offense-meter needle is resting at ......Zero.....

What I have tried to "gift" you with is "Facts" from the "school-hard-knocks".............I have been there and done what you Think you want to do.............it can get UGLY on a so-so-day and it can get DEADLY on a Not-so-good-day........here is the deal........deadly can be a self inflected-ending, where it gets really ugly is when you make BAD decisions that result in bad endings for other folks.

So here is likely your best choice since you are DETERMINED to push past the LIMITS of normal RV use............buck up your $$$ and get a "Expedition-RV" these rigs are essentially a all-wheel-drive-truck with plenty of tire /wheel-well space for chains and winch on each end so think of it as a snow-plow-rig with a RV box on the back with massive heating system(s) to keep you alive at way-too-below-Zero.

For way too many years I HAD to attend "Harry-skid-harry-fire-harry-flat-tire-harry-brake-failure-harry-electrical-harry-engine-harry-harry-U-name-it-training EVERY six months..........at Flight Safety International and you know what...........a huge part of that training was things you should not even attempt to do.........but we spent a LOT of time sweating it out in full motion simulators for those time when really bad things happen........

Sitting in a RV Park with snow knee-deep and way-below-Zero might be your bag........however you allude that yo want to exerciser your "Harry-skid-training" on your weekend moves.........  This involves risks that involve other folks.......what has just only hinted at here is the Fact that RV units are "Highly-compromised-vehicles" on dry highways in good weather however operating a RV in snow and ice conditions elevates the risk factors greatly.......

In my later years I often became involved in wrongful death court cases and a slang-term that Lawyers use in that the accident-perp would be in a ..........."rush-to-eternity".............in other words in hindsight ......what was he thinking??

Maybe I come across a but gruff or grumpy or unfriendly and maybe I am at times .........however I have seen a fair amount of heartache and hopefully your "plan" can be "adjusted" to lower your risk factors.........

    Hi everyone,

We have made the commitment to get on the road for the next two years (at least) but we are, despite researching carefully, unsure of whether to go with a Class A or a fifth wheel + truck. The purchase prices of Class A motorhome vs 5th wheel + truck seem comparable so it comes down to what would work best, and this is what we don't know!

Our situation: We're an older couple, kids left home. We've done a lot of road trips in vehicles ranging from SUV's with our camping gear to six months in a VW Combi travelling Europe. We're on the road whenever we can get away, in whatever the local rental place has available. Both of us work from home and rely on fast, reliable internet to do so. One of us is employed full-time so has to be able to set up an office space and work uninterrupted Monday thru Friday.

We don't want to buy new. That part we know for sure. The rest is what we are vacillating over... motorhome or 5th wheel in our circumstances? We will spend most weekdays parked somewhere. We don't want to be driving in the dark because we want to see everything and work days finish around 6pm Eastern. So, weekends are when we will be moving. We might stay in some places for a week, or a few months. If we have reasonable connectivity we might stay boondocking until we run out of tank space.

What is essential is the ability to stay comfortable during winter. During the holiday season we will be in Canada most years, in the east usually, which means in snow and ice. We will be heading in the opposite direction to most snowbirds because we want to be with family for the holidays.

We've read everything we can and have visited some dealers (there's not much to choose from locally). We've used a lot of different vehicles ourselves and know a Class B isn't for us. Class C may be too small for living full-time. We want to boondock as much as possible, and stay in a lot of the federal and state parks. I'm not antisocial but I'm never happier than when I can smell trees and sit under a sky of stars with no sounds except maybe some passing animals. I guess you could say we're not really RV resort park kinda people.

Is there anyone here living a similar kind of lifestyle that can give us some pointers please? We're really stuck on this motorhome vs fifth wheel decision and could use some tips and advice from you please. Oh! Budget, we're a bit flexible. If we can get what fits us for under $70,000 we'd be happy.

    Thanks.

    C-L&Vee,

Seems like you have a job & Family problem not so much as a RV problem……

VERY FEW RV rigs are configured for travel in snow and ice…...chains seldom fit in the tight and flimsy wheel wells.

There is a reason that many RV users are called “Snowbirds” ……….they tend to try to stay several hundred miles South of the “snowline”.

We have BOTH class A and a truck / trailer RV and snow is a royal pain in both setups, and can be a danger to you and others on the road.

I grew up in a family that operated a LOT of trucks and towed a LOT of trailers in a LOT of snow and it is a DEADLY endeavor PERIOD and it is in NO way recreation PERIOD.

On the best of days snow in a RV sucks and on a bad-day it can be deadly……

You ask for advice, and so here it is from a guy that been there and done that……..IF you want to travel in Canada in the winter get a good 4 wheel drive rig and good chains and then camp out in warm motels……

If you simply gotta “RV” just buy some airline tickets for the family……….and have a nice cool drink under the awning…...Christmas under a palm tree aint't all that bad……..

Drive on........(Don't get crosswise in the RV in the......snow)

  16. Time out......

    How about the Arch???

Maybe.....just maybe.......Mr Anderson could be the "$olution" to this instance of bad-boy-defacing of public property.

Sometime ago I did a couple of gigs with a few Indian tribes and every day was "education" in ......"diversity"....

Some tribes have members that are born with the gift of restoring damaged natural places......so.......

You want to "wack-bad-boy-Anderson"......well try this one......petition the BLM to "cooperate" with Anderson (a$ he so pleeeeeded in his "oh I have sinned" letter) and then "liddle-Ryan" could pay ALL costs and Ryan would perform ALL the LABOR as DIRECTED by the Native "Restorer(s)" while staying in a NATIVE camp site nearby and substiting on natve diet........

Now this...... "Restoration".....is to be a full-time endeavor ......no days off for Ryan......

Here is the fun part......often these native restorers live life at a "different-drum-beat" than Ryan and the rest of us ...."Invaders"......so this "Restoration"  WILL take Ryan TIME and more TIME and since he has pleeeeded in his letter to make amends for his SINS it seems only Christian to help poor Ryan down the road to redemption......

Trust me when the Native passes you the plank of wood with the slimy ell's to eat IT is a Religious ..... Awakening....

Ryan has pleeeeded for our help in atoning for his SINS...... shucks this plan is so good perhaps the judge might help Ryan restore some other ...."$inners-$ins....."

    R & L,

Trust me you will be just fine in Bend in June.....oh ya....

I was hatched in Central Oregon and family has had homes since before it was a state (1859)....so here is the weather deal..... only TWO years in a row do I recall watching the Fourth of July fire works in a snow storm......not many places in the lower 48 can have fire works in the snow on the 4th.

.....ya know that second year that it snowed we lost a few Kalifornians......

Now the good news ......as I recall I have seldom needed to plow much snow in July in Bend......

We still own a couple places in Bend but we don't need to arrive until it gets over a +100 at our AZ & NV places......

You will likely survive Bend if you take your parka, heavy boots and thick gloves.....

I've seen those t-shirts too.  However, Oregon does have a summer with very little rain. We have owned a place just South of Waldport forever and almost every year in mid-summer you will have 90 days or more with NO measurable moisture AT ALL.......NONE...

We had a 2000 ft long turf airstrip that mowed a lot until mid June then it turned brown and never needed mowing until March.....

Now when it rains in can get with the program .......sometimes a inch in a hour but you just put your rain gear on and stay away from swollen fast running water......

Geez folks........imagine.......ole Ryan texts his "retained-lawyer-shop"    Shyster, Hookum & Screwum P C, LLC .......and.......BINGO a few minutes later......... a canned Damage-Control-Letter-of-Oh-I-Have-Sinned appears along with a web-link-comment-button that feeds directly to the P R section of the "Law-less-Firm" and for about $7,723.00 Ryan is in the drivers seat and his "handlers" have taken command of what the lawyers refer to as........."taking control of the ........."consequences"........and Teflon-coating "Ryan" and making the BLM the bad guy IF they do NOT PARTNER with "Ryan"........

Shucks folks with the proper ........."Handling"..........by " Shyster, Hookum & Screwum P C, LLC" poor and sad "Ryan" could maybe see a uptick in sales of maybe 14% and 5.677% better market share........

Having been a expert witness for some fairly dark law-less firms at times, I can assure you that plenty of "canned-letters" reside on huge hard drives on the lawyer servers.......,

Perhaps you have been living in a cave but..........Being a JERK these days is..........in fashion........,and the norm.....

    Drive on...........,(Be a JERK and ..........lawyer-up.......the new-norm)

lose everything he owns. NO money in the bank, tank his credit, etc.

Only 5 years? The ban should be for life. And we should all join forces to do our best to put that company out of business!

    Anderson Hitches

Let's spread the story that tells who it was along with his company to all corners of the RV world!

Well indeed this is fits at least the SAD & DUMB category and it seems likely that with the evidence images that exist that it might be better to NOT beat up on the company and the employees that had NOTHING to do with the punk-like-defacing of the arch.........

Might it better "justice" to bring pressure to "PUNISH" the "perpetrator"  and NOT the employees?  ?

Yes of course it's fairly maddening when some jerk gets his jollies wrecking nature and it seems that being a JERK is fairly normal for more and more people and positions but .............to punish innocent employees can bring us into  the trap of jerk-ism ourselves ...........

Being around jerks makes many of us upset and that is understandable, however....... might be best to focus out and aim the laser of justice at the BLM and let them know that a little-slap-on-the-wrist is NOT justice........

Last time I spent some time in China I became aware of a young lady that was sent to a VERY grim prison for a finance offense and she had to do HARD LABOR for 13 months 14 HOURS EVERY DAY!!!!!!

In China they TAKE YOUR TIME.........EVERY DAY........ALL DAY.......

Here we Lawyer-Up and seldom have "TIME" taken from the lives of "well-off-Jerks"...........

IF this "well-off-Jerk" had 13 months of HARD LABOR ..........EVERY DAY...........might be a few JERKS decide to carve their initials in the doors of their jacked-up pick-ups instead of arches..........

    Jerks are a royal pain..........

  21. Almost no difference.....

Our toybox is under 10k And our Morgan Cargo box stands at 12'-2" so we have a built in headwind in normal wind conditions.....

I flight plan @ 10 mpg but have seen as low as 7 and high as 13.5 with a big tail wind.

Cummins has a nice chapter on their website regarding the aero-effects of trucks and various factors pertaining to milage and improvements that can be obtained.....

  22. Blew out of Bend Wednesday afternoon and raced a couple antelope ( dropped of cruise as they passed in front....on our way to overnight at the fairgrounds in Burns, OR.... Dolly-the-paint-horse loves to make a few laps on the race track...

Thursday we  hoped to have enough parts and diesel to wonder over to Winnemucca then Lovelock, Fallon, and overnight at the Rodeo grounds at Hawthorne,NV....

NOT TO BE.........99 Miles out of Burns and 126 miles North of Winnemucca the Dollymomma called on the radio and said..."Old Blue just died".........I coasted the Dollytrolley into the ditch and walked back to the GMC and opened the hood and all looked OK........got in and cranked the engine but it was obvious that it was out of ignition timing......I crawled back under the hood and shined a bright light on the distributor cap and checked the hold down screws all was tight.......

The wind was freezing and a few snow flakes would blow by so I said we will get a tow to Winnemucca ..........it only took TEN hours to get the tow.........Fortunately Dolly was in the horse module in the toyhauler so we drove the 52 miles South to Mc Dermitt and dropped the toyhauler and Dolly at the rodeo grounds and then when the tow truck arrived he informed me that he could haul the GMC but that the tow insurance had forgot to include the horse trailer in tow behind the GMC.......hummm ....so.....I crank up the Dollytrolley and lead the tow truck 52 miles back North up Hwy 95 and load the pickup on the rollback and then the dispatcher calls and says that they will tow the trailer after all..........so the Dollytrolley just had a 104 mile milk run in the middle of the nite..........

Next day I tell the mechanic how the GMC seemed to have lost ignition timing so he ran the codes and NO codes were in the computer and the ECM self tested  perfect so..........he pulled the distributor cap off and the rotor fell out on top of the engine......one screw was still in the rotor and the other screw was in the bottom of the distributor.......a new cap and rotor was installed and we decided to celebrate by spending the evening at the Winnemucca rodeo / convention center watching the Western States Ranch Rodeo Finals and it was a great show......

Friday we departed Winnemucca in moderate rain and sleet but the weather started clearing South of Lovelock and was sunny at Fallon. The GMC need gas at Hawthorne and I helped a older gent with a new Volvo repair a airbag leveling valve anchor on the lower cross member when the pivot-rivet pulled out of the hole in the cross member........I cranked the generator and used a angle grinder to remove the rest of the rivet from the rod link end and then we installed a capscrew stolen from a air hose clamp on the Dollytrolley......

We wondered the another 100 miles south on Hwy 95 to overnight at the rodeo grounds at Tonopah (much new and much smoother paving the last 30 miles into Tonopah).........

Yesterday we departed Tonopah and had a lunch stop in Beatty and then drove south to the Last Chance Peak where the Dolly winter camp is just East of Death valley.......

We only had THIRTY tires on the road this trip .......and air  stayed in them all for the hobble down to Last Chance Peak Dolly-the-paint-horse camp.........all in all,  just another .....adventure in hay burner hauling.......

    Drive on......(hay-burner in tow)

  24. Perhaps ..........we need a "New-Law"........

Perhaps we need a .......Co-driver law

In the "A E R O S P A C E" game almost ALL aircraft grossing more 12,500 have to have a copilot ( a few very easy to fly aircraft are wavered)

So why do we have copilots?  ?

Captain  says........... copilot is his "slave"

Copilot says.........copilot says that he has to fly the aircraft do all the "dirty" work and keep the geezer Captain awake during the landing..

So..........here is the "New Law" for driving....... "Any vehicle with ANY electronic device in the vehicle has to have a C0-Driver........

Shucks imagine both drivers could spend 50% of the time driving each and another 50% of the time playing DOOM or Grand auto racer or posting Utube of the close calls while they drive.

Distracted vehicle operations are difficult to solve.......

Many many moons ago (Dec 29, 1978) I spent a long day flying in marginal weather most of the day but weather cleared  and was glad to get the bird in the hanger.......

I was driving through Portland Oregon when IF I had looked in the rear view at Burnside and 157th ave I would have soiled my undies since I would have seen a United DC-8 crash land in the street behind me.........Gulp......Imagine flying all day and then having another darn airplane kill you as you drive home from the airport.........

So what happened in the ole DC-8 that resulted in the darn thing crashing a few miles from the runway on a clear winter evening?

Well the captain became distracted by a minor landing gear problem......

The copilot became distracted by the same landing gear problem......

And the Flight Engineer became distracted by the same landing gear problem......

Of the three man crew no one remembered to fly the aircraft........

It was flying around Portland for a hour trying to solve the minor landing gear problem and it ran out of fuel and could not glide to the runway.........

So........maybe our "New C0-Driver Law) will need a "Riding-Driving-Engineer" to assist the "Driver" and the C0-Driver when any electronic device in the vehicle........

Or maybe the "Driver" just .........drives.....

    SIDE NOTE:

The Portland United Airlines accident resulted in sweeping changes that resulted and system instigated called CRM (Crew Resource Management) that has gone a long way in improving aircraft operational safety..........it has not solved all problems but it has resulted in measurable gains in aircraft safety.

    Drive on............(Where is my.........C0-Driver?)

I just did a 700 mile drive bobtail and, I had a long conversation with Phil about this crash just before Texas went under water.

Here is my 2 cents, there are times when you can't avoid driving in traffic.    Make your own space when ever you can, I don't drive as fast as the fast traffic but, faster than the slow traffic.    Usually with this speed you can build a little bubble around you, changing lanes to merge traffic as needed.     In some places where lane control is in place this is harder but, none the less it works.

Avoid driving in packs, that is where more stuff happens in less time.    Also, you should be looking at traffic a half mile to a mile ahead of you.     I look at trends in closure, so many people, CDL drivers and average motorist only focus on what is nearly ahead of them.

    Steve

Steve you bring a lot of good points to the table.

In the stone age......Grumps used to preach that the less the gap to the car in front of you.......the less time you tend to look in your mirrors........

Out in the wilds of Oregon and Washington freeways were scarce and narrow often twisty, hilly roads were the rule and Grumps spent a lot of time keeping space ahead of the truck and looking in mirrors ...........he looked at jokers in the mirror that were tail-gating and weaving trying to short-pass between curves ..........he would often pull off into a wide shoulder to let the "soon-to-be-wreck" pass on his "appointment-to-eternity" as grumps would mutter......

Grumps had the concept that trucks never had the right-of-way......ever.... and if a car did something stupid in front of a truck the truck had to give way.........that's just what he did the day when a bug-eyed-Sprite came screaming around a curve head-on in our lane and the ole KWopper rolled over in the ditch.......make no mistake these trucks hit the ground HARD I know first hand!!

Being the biggest dog on the road aint as easy as it looks in the movies......

Even out in the boondocks you need to keep your eyes open and the space ahead large enough to save the dummy ahead of you.

Drive on..........(Do you have enough time to look in your......mirrors?)
