  1. Another question asked of me  on this thread was how much I wanted to spend on this project (noises reduction).........

My thought is if I can get a cab that rides well, heats well, cools well and I can listen to my stereo in nothing it to much. I was in the stereo world in now, what seems to be a different lifetime for me. In college I worked for a car stereo shop back in Pittsburg Kansas. We did Dynmat work ( I can't believe almost 30 years later that stuff is still on the market, so I am going to look into that for sure. I love the idea of the Lizard Skin spray as a preliminary coating.

So cost..... I am willing to spend between $2000.00 & $3000.00 to do this plus beer for my friends and a few choice words along the way LOL! I use the mechanic for all big stuff but this is in my wheel house to be able to do.

Last but not least this prepares me for a second project I am getting ready to start on. I am going to redo a 1952, 2 door hard top Chevy Style Line, it was my fathers and the car we did things on together. It has a 3 on the tree and a 6 cylinder 216. It is extremely loud inside and I figure If I can get the Volvo quiet I can get the 52 quiet. One of the really neat things about this car is the 3 on the tree, It is not synchronized and you have to down shift in reverse as you slow down. The only other thing I drove more fun that that was my grandpa's 1946 ton and a half dualy that you had  to double clutch......

Well School starts Wednesday for teachers in Las Vegas (CCSD - Clark County) and we have training's to get us ready for the next school year. It should be fun.

Semi only has a few more mechanical issues to address. Then I get to bring it home. I am looking forward to the reunion, plus when I get it back it will be road worthy without to much worry. Believe me I know any time I get behind the wheel of a machine that big anything can happen at any time!

Lizard skin is a spray on coating that is water base that you could try.

I like the lizard skin idea. What I would like to do is completely strip the inside of my cab and spray anything I could to dampen the sound from the metal up. So begin with the metal then put a spray on additive /  paint of some type, next coat the paint with a second coat of paint, then put the dynmat or some kind of sound absorbing material on top of that, fill all voids in the doors and side panels. Next replace all of the door panels with new outer door panel fabric. Lastly on floor, I heard on a truckers website some of those guys who were owner operators used R19 between a layer of dynmat and the rubber insert on the floor. I heard they also stuffted hollow areas with R19 to keep the truck warmer or cooler at night depending on the time of the year. Some stated as far as temperature change went, after turning off the key of the truck, they could simply turn on a fan and just keep air circulating around the cab and it stayed comfortable longer with the added insulation.

Thanks a lot for your suggestion. I am looking into all avenues.

I agree.  Ask for Robin, he has a British accent but he's lived in the US for years, and he was the one who helped me get my rig set up.  Had some issues with parts on installing my front airbags but one phone call and he had backup parts in the mail asap.  We took the truck and TH on a cross country to  California and back and the rig handled very well.  Keep in mind that you are going to hit some s@$t roads and take a bounce but I'm convinced these really helped the ride quality.  Oh yeah...stay away from Indianapolis.... nothing will help on those roads.

I will do this both of you guys are correct a call to the people who run the business would be the best.

I have not done that in an HDT, but I did on my last dually.  Stripped the entire interior to the sheetmetal and stuck dynamat extreme on every metal surface and body panel I could put it.  Then used another dynamat product that I can't remember the name of that looks like 1/2" thick foam rubber and stuffed that in all the voids in pillars, roof bracing, etc and as far up the firewall as I could get it, and behind interior panels.  That thing was QUIET.  On the interstate the loudest thing was the wind whispering on the glass.   Almost too quiet, I'm a car guy and used to having an ear open for ticks and rattles, and you just could not hear that stuff at all.  That was only a crew cab pickup but it was a good sized job.  But I was very happy with it.  I think I spent about $500 on materials and all the labor cost me was the beer I'd a been sitting around drinking anyway.  There are very good less expensive products on the market very close to the dynamat extreme for a lot less money.  The trick to  the dyna mat is the little rubber roller to work it into the curves and tight spots.

I have to look into the extreme dynmat. As I said in am earlier response I did not know this product was still on the market, plus I had not heard of extreme dynmat. I really appreciate the information. So how much beer does it take to do this project? I am a Michelob Amber Bach or Shiner Bock person, I like a lot of craft beers too. LOL!

    Hi Cory,

You need to ask yourself a question or too. How much work do I want to do and how much money am I willing to send. That way you can get some idea what your cost could be and if I want to do the work. The best way to do the interior in my opinion is to start with removing the seats. Then you can start with the door panels. Looking for more work, remove the panels in the sleeper. And if you want to tackle a big work, remove the headliner. I think you get the idea. The cost of dynamat is expensive. There is other stuff with a lower price and works just as good. Right now I can't remember the name of the stuff what I used on my truck. It will come to me later. Just trying to give you an idea.

    Al

Brain fart is over (it lasted little over an hour). lol. I remember the name of the material I used. It's called Rattletrap. It has 3 X's print on the aluminum surface. You want 80 mil. I bought mind off of Ebay. Good luck with you project. Do a search on the hdt site. I remember some past threads.

Thanks! I really want to make it quieter. I used dynmat when I was in college doing car stereos. I did not know it was still around over 20 years later.

  6. What you all had luck with using to reduce engine noise and road noise in the cab of your trucks. In the car stereo world we used dynmat. I was wondering about additional products or products used together with dynmat to make my interior quieter.

    Howdy Cory,

Wishing you and DW a happy anniversary.  As its going to be a while before your going to be towing a trailer on a regular basis, do you really need to replace your drive tires at this time, OR can you safely drive the truck for now on the tires you have?  Tires will age out before they wear out when used as we use our HDT's so if your tires are SAFE to use I would suggest waiting as long as possible before replacing them.  Just a thought.

    Dave

The tires I have on the truck will not pass a safety inspection. Plus the drive tire on the drivers side closest to the cab outer rim is flat. It holds air for about 2 minutes. I have had it repaired before. The tires on it have aged out too. I agree with what you are saying about waiting, but not sure what to do.

I got married in Vegas once and had the reception at the Rio. Part of the reception package was to ride the sky gondola and throw beads at people!

I have always liked the Rio. They are very good to teachers here in Las Vegas and treat us locals extremely well.

  9. Well as I type this I have a 3 bone Prime Rib cooking in my oven for my & the D.W.'s 17th aniversary, we were married at the Rio Hotel and Casino today in July of 2003. My mom and dad sent me and the DW an amazon gift card, so Pam asked me to look on Amazon of something small for the truck. I found a set of mirrors for just about the size of the gift card, she said to order them so I did.

We decided to get the bushings on the back of the cab replaced they were extremely crooked and replace the cab leveling arm along with them. The Mechanic is lifting the cab off of the frame and leveling it.

After this gets done I am going to go to work on the front, new shocks, new brakes and new leaf springs. Then going to put on 8 new drive tires and get the tie rods done.

Next I will be ready to start the fun stuff!

I saw my old post on this and read a lot of it, but one thing I never saw pop up was peoples opinions on the Donvel air ride system. I am thinking about getting it for my cab and for my suspension up front. Does anybody out there have them on their truck.

I can't say how happy I am that I found a good mechanic. It is so nice to not have to do the work myself. He has all of the correct tools and experience. If you are ever in Vegas, look up True Blue Diesel Mechanic Shop, Steve is a great person.

After the mechanical part of my truck gets done I plan on driving it back home to Kansas next summer. At the beginning of July I flew home with the DW to Pittsburg Kansas. I went home to see family. One day I called up Jack Mayer over at RVH Life Styles in Dennis Kansas (Just outside of Parsons) I drove over to see him and visited for about 2 hours. Jack was such a great person to meet. It is not often that you get to meet somebody who is both an expert in the field and is extremely nice and willing to talk at the same time. I plan on taking him my truck next summer to do his magic on getting me ready to tow a 5th wheel.

Well that is about it, I have to turn the oven off. I have been cooking at 500 degrees for 37 minutes and 30 seconds - 5 minutes per pound and mine is 7.5 lbs, so I had to split the difference.

    Well got to go!

Doesn't apply to *you* when driving in CA - but for a driver (with CA DL)  .....try telling that to the CHP,  ROTFL

Sounds like NV has "mirrored" the CA regs.

BTW - other states like to do the same with CA emissions.  It's called..... REVENUE

    Thanks, Good to know.

  11. Prior to Covid I liked staying at Flying J / Pilot or Love's Truck stops. I always went in to talk to the store manager and they never has a problem with it. One time I was at the Flying J / Pilot in Hysperia California and ate at the Outpost Cafe every night for a week, while I did Schutzhund training in the L.A. area.

For those of you who are wondering what Schutzhund training is, it is a competition style training of Dogs in the German Style which has three parts, Tracking, Obedience and Protection. Then you go to trials and compete against other dogs and trainer teams. It is a blast.

Thank you I’ll give him a call. I’ve been watching all the YouTube videos and reading the RVH website trying to figure out what will work for me. It’s exciting but a little overwhelming.

I agree I am 48 years old and bought my volvo 3 years ago. I am still in the process of getting it ready to take on a big trip. There is a lot to do. I tried to work on it myself and found I just did not have the right tools. So I am paying a diesel shop in Vegas to do it. Yes it is overwhelming, I agree. Honestly my 2 hours with Jack helped to get a game plan in place, after you talk to him you will feel confident. Also if it can go wrong or will go wrong believe me it has happened to me so if you are having one of those days send me a PM anytime. I am a high school biology teacher here in vegas, but I will answer you as soon as I have time.

  13. Contact Jack Mayer at RVH Lifestyles in Parsons Kansas, actually Dennis Kansas, he can answer all of your questions. I spent two hours in his office a couple of weeks ago, I went back to Pittsburg Kansas to see my patents and family. I called Jack up and asked him if he had time to talk, then I drove over to See him. I can't say enough good things about this guy, if you want to do it with your HDT he will give you great advice and has the shop to do it in. You can look him up on line.

  14. Well I am sure a few of you have used P.B. Blaster as penetrating oil to break free tough stuff on your trucks before.......

Yesterday I was in Lowe's all gloved up and mask on when I noticed an area in the front of the store dedicated to sanitation and keeping people safe from the virus. As I was looking at an array of products I saw a can in a familure shape, color and lettering style. Looks like P.B. Blaster but it is called Hand Blaster, 80% alcohol to clean your hands with. Since I like their other products I bought a bottle for each vehicle I drive. I am happy with the purchase, I just thought I would pass this along.

We replaced our washer jug on our Freightliner, was a pretty easy job but we did not need to replace any of the lines.

On the car, if you can work with carburetors, go for the old style V8, otherwise the thing to do now a days is to but a LS motor in it with fuel injection. We installed a 5.3L in a 65 Chevy Van that has a chopped top on it.

    shMAc22l.jpg

I really am having a hard time deciding on engine and power train. Part of me wants to keep the old 216, and part of me wants to upgrade to something fuel injected.
