  1. Well, more bad assumptions and explanations. I used to work for an air compressor company in Fresno, Ca. Also worked for a hydraulics company out there. So I sat down last night & did a little flow chart. Result...What I was saying was happening could not be happening. Back to the chart. At the end of the evening, seemed like to me everything was really pointing to some type of sensor.

Called my local friendly diesel shop & got them to come by with their scanner. And Doncha know that Volvo has a dual function sensor for oil and coolant temperature. Plugged the scanner in & found out that sitting still with engine off that I had 104 psi of oil pressure. With the scanner unplugged, shows about 45 psi oil pressure vs normal of 60. Keep in mind that this is with the engine off. Engine running, 104 or so.

Pulled the sensor, will install a new one & my money is on problem solved. As for the rest of it, won't know until we start & drive it.

Welcome to the Twilight Zone (cue hokey music)

  2. I woulda thought youse guys woulda figgered out not to talk technical stuff after the night before by now. The problem is HIGH air pressure, not low. Once the compressor reaches the normal cut-out pressure, it just keeps going up, and the higher the pressure, the faster the pressure builds.

Rick suggested blown head gasket. Just went down & checked for that specifically. This is a D-12 Volvo engine. It is either a gear drive or a chain drive in a fully enclosed housing like a timing cover. Some of the rotating shafts are seeping but there are no leaks, especially no leaks on the compressor head. Dry as a popcorn fart.

That said, this seems to be best characterized by something blocking the compressor output. Have not checked wet tank or storage tanks, but does seem to set parking brake. Need to check that further. ($100K of rolling stock, and I have to fix something so we can leave the house tomorrow)

  3. I appear to have an over-pressure issue with the engine oil system. Had an air leak  going on for several weeks, but no issues other than the air leak, just drained down overnight. When I went to move the truck, it went about 10 yards, flashed a (high) oil pressure indication, went to a mandatory stop indication, and shut down. After 3 or 4 more attempts to move it out of the way, a check of the engine bay didn't show any obvious signs, but did show the coolant level increasing from the norm. Looks like oil in the coolant system to me. After diddling around a bit more, seems that the air leak is related in some way because the auto cutout for the air system is going past the normal limits. More tinkering fun today. Hopefully its not a head gasket.

  4. Hey ABS

Just curious - how did you determine your pin weight? That is pretty heavy, about 30%  GVWR, where you should be down around 20-22%. (Watch, someone will bite my head off for that statement because it isn't really correct. Pin weight is affected by the Gross Weight of the entire rig, not just the trailer, but it will guide you in the right general direction). You probably already knew that and I'm Captain Obvious.

  5. I seem to be finding more and more that a slim majority of truck repair shops seem to be directly connected from our bank account to the shop account. This is even more prevalent at the badged dealer's repair facility. If you hear the phrase "We have to take the Contract and Professional trucks first", you should run for the nearest exit and do not look back.

  6. Aw-rite, if we're gonna start listing best ever restaurants, then the rule has to be "No Chains", Mom & Pop joints only (well, maybe Aunts & Uncles too.) AND...In keeping with the theme of the forum, there must be sufficient room to turn one of these beasts around and park. Access to whatever fuel island exists (If Any) is NOT a consideration!!!

  7. Just to confuse and obtusificate the issue further, I apparently have failed to understand the intent here completely. So I mounted two (2) fused terminal blocks NEAR the jackalopee, and fed power from a switched power source to one and a non switched source to the other.  That lets me add lights, radios, winches, etc without interfering with the original truck wiring.

    Works purty good

  8. Pretty much what Rickeieio said X2

I do disconnect the battery, and I do place the ground clamp as close to the weld as I can get it

Have had Stick, Mig, and Tig done on this truck and the same on many other vehicles. Never a problem.

That said, keep in mind that I, along with most others on forums, have no problem with spending plenty of your money....

  9. Here we are in the suburbs of Wapiti Wyoming. 32 Miles west to Yellowstone east entrance, 18 miles to Cody. 130 miles one way over the Beartooth Pass/Highway to Red Lodge Montana. Wow....what a ride. 10,947 ft elevation, well above the treeline. Great desolation. See forever.

Closer to Wapiti, saw many buffalo, a herd of 200+ elk, silly wabbits, whistle pigs, free range cows, and lotsa horses. No bears or moosies.

Leaving here on Tuesday morning for Teddy Roosevelt Nat'l Park in ND Badlands, then south at some point.

Great to see Jim & Cathy at West Yellowstone.

  10. Well, we're still in Richfield, UT waiting on Yellowstone. Haven't really ridden the bikes, most of the interesting roads turn to gravel pretty quickly. Did a few maintenance items & will install a couple of fuel filters in the morning. Did finally get a few days at a park up near Salt Lake City, so moving there on the 21st. We leave there on the 24th & head for Yellowstone. This afternoon we got a spot up by Yellowstone's West Gate for 5 days, so we're gonna unload the bikes & chase griz...

  11. Garrison MT was nice folks & older park. 9 miles down the road for the best chinese & thai for 100 miles. Still no luck with any reasonable approach to YNP so moved on to Idaho Falls. Not gonna mention the park name. They rented us a space with a known electrical problem, got caught in the lie, and we cut our stay to overnight only. We're now in Richfield UT, mostly because we couldn't find anything for Salt Lake area. Taking a week off & we'll see what we can do after that. This is a nice KOA park with several large sites and a really nice staff.

BTW, some folks we have run into several times said they had seen another HDT rig up at Glacier National Park recently. They said the tractor and camper were painted to match. Anybody know who that was?

Today, however, we plan on starting off real slow and then tapering off.

  12. Left Glacier National this morning with one night at Garrison MT confirmed. Leaving tomorrow AM for somewhere. Can't find a spot or even a walmart. Maybe in Lexington which is about 50 miles from YNP North Gate.

Going to the Sun Road ride was absolutely fabulous. Would have been slightly better with no traffic, but even so, WOW.

    Onward Ho!!

  13. On the way from Burlington WA to Glacier National Park. Will take a few extra days traveling due to the turista overflow conditions in the Northwest. Took US-20 over the Northern Cascades, through the National Park. Yet another fun drive (no sarcasm intended). Took our first stop in beautiful downtown Wilbur, WA, POP 852. On Wednesday, we'll kick the tires & light the fires & head for the bustling metropolis of St Regis (POP 319) where Nugget RV Resort is located. After burning up all of our waiting days, we should arrive at the West entrance to Glacier National Park for 3 days at the KOA Camp. At that, 75' and 30 amp only. Oh Well, it is, after all, the Going to the Sun Road.

  14. Jim;

Please don't sneeze on the snow...we plan on being in Glacier NP in a week or two. Hahaha

Met a White truck with a Mobile Suite behind it headed south while we were headed north from Astoria OR. Didn't see much of it, kind of met at the crest of a hill after a bridge. Who was that masked man????

Currently at Burlington WA KOA, in the new section. That's reasonably HDT friendly, room to move, but have to disconnect & park separate. Still working on bathrooms etc & WiFi isn't functional yet.

Crazy buzy up here. Paula must have made 50 calls looking for a site between yesterday & today & they were full. Not just couldn't fit us, but just plain full up. Where we're staying is 70 miles from Seattle and this is the last site they had. It's NUTS.

  15. Leaving Coos Bay OR tomorrow morning for Astoria Washington for a week or so. Continuing up US-101. What a wonderful road - curves are perfect for a 39 ton rig and the scenery is out of this world...Seattle for a week or so then over to Glacier National Park and the "Going to the Sun Road" Haven't figured out how to handle ND, SD, CO, and WY yet. Lotsa backtracking and extra miles.

Wave if you see us on the road

Rick, we'd come down & meet ya'll if it wasn't 1500 miles one way...

  16. In Greenfield CA for a few more days at Yanks RV Resort. Really a nice park. All paved roads, concrete sites, concrete patio, up to 100' pull thru (like we're in) so you can have the toter, trailer, and smart all in the same place. Really well done. What's the catch? Well, some time within a few minutes of 4:00 PM, the wind will blow. Not talking a breeze here, I mean the wind blows like you're standing on the bow of a ship turned into the wind in a Nor'easter. Every day... and it's a bit pricey. That didn't bother us much, but at 4:00 PM, you're going to come in, so no cooking outside, no lawn furniture, no flags, nada. You can catch up on your reading.

Next Thursday we leave for Forestville where we will be staying at the lovely Sonoma County Fairgrounds for about a week visiting friends.

  17. Decided on "Hitchin' Post Rv Park" just North of Las Vegas. Seems like the largest sites and manager seems nice on the phone. We'll see.

Had a visit from the brother of someone on the forum. Brother's name (the one here) is Jim, didn't catch the wife's name, and didn't get the other brother's handle, but they were nice enough to stop by and let us know what we were getting into in Vegas. Seemed to think the park we chose was pretty good. Thanks.

Does anyone have specific knowledge of Hwy 1 (Pacific Coast Hwy) headed north from Morro Bay. So far can't find any overt restrictions, but they are referred to several times. I figure we would be pushing the length limit but only in a few places. And cursed soundly for those unlucky few souls trapped behind us.

    Thanks

    Paul & Paula

  18. Currently in Williams, AZ. Trying to decide whether to leave the relative comfort of 98-100 degrees and head for the 110-114 temps at Las Vegas. Really don't want to be here for 10 more days, even though the park is nice enough. Last section of Route 66 to be bypassed by I-40. Went out on Crookton road today to look at the tourist trap. I don't recommend the cuisine. Meals, if you eat out in Williams, can be a little pricy. Grocery stores aren't much better. Typical 12oz package of Oscar Mayer bacon is $10.99

Anybody got a recommendation for a place to stay around Las Vegas?

How about around Monterrey Bay? Best I could do is out around Gilroy.

    Thanks

    Paul & Paula
