If I remember the story; that's what caused a man on irv2.com to have to rebuild his 560HP(?) ISX (I think the MH was around 2004 or later) in his MH 2X. The first time was something about the EGR plugging up  and causing #6 cylinder to drop a valve, which resulted in a $30,000 rebuild, of which Cummins paid $10,000.  The second time was due to a defective -something, another $30,000, Cummins paid $0.

The ISX is much discussed on trucking forums.

Yep, been reading on truckers report for some time. Does appear though that a lot of the issues with ISX did have some notification that a problem was brewing, just not everyone understood that new symptom as a potential catastrophe.

Not much help with hvac - the KW system on the B models is different than Pete’s. KW sleeper heater hot water valves liked to leak from time to time. The fan and it’s racket and most of the rest of the system on a KW is outside the cab on the firewall and serviced from under the hood standing on the floor. The engine intake is also totally outside the cab not routed inside then out again which works better at 30 below. The sleeper curtain is insulated to isolate the sleeper from heat/cold/noise from the driving cab.
Not much help to you on Peterbilt systems…

Obviously you are quite familiar then with ac systems. ! ?

So here's what I'm think'n if you care to have a listen. On Peterbilt anyway you have one condenser out front of the radiator, two evaporators (one under cab, one under sleeper bunk), two expansion valves(one for cab, one for sleeper), one receiver/dryer, and one compressor.

The feed lines to the sleeper are just tee'd into the main lines, both hot and cold. If I were to then "tee" a second compressor (electric) into the system, and plumb a second condenser (sized right for system) with an electric fan, can I run with the prime mover engine off, and a generator powered up? I'd need 12vdc for the bunk and dash fans, which I have. And if I use a soft start motorized compressor, I should be able to run it on an inverter generator along with the condenser fan. Do you see any obvious issues with this?

Back to Deletes.  To Delete EGR really need to have the engine Decompressed as to make them run adequately breathing Dirty Air they Raised from avg 16:1 to 18:1 to do so.  DOC/DPF deletes, biggest issue is the engine Processor remains in a Fault Condition, will affect timing and fuel adjustments, saw similar on early Harley DELPHI Tuners these being a bit more complicated.

Best Options are to leave systems as built, best overall performance and ability to adjust to changing conditions.  With my own it is a 6NZ, only items not are Hard Parts as Rocker Housing and a few odd pieces, None of which affect engine operation.  Is built on a BXS platform where has heavier four bolt rods and a better crankshaft.

Yep, things are different now dayz. They used to put emissions on engines that were'nt designed for them, now they design the engine for emissions.

My last Cat was an MXS prefix. 550. So easy to drive. This X15 E Cummins is governed,....yes governed at 1,700rpm. Does'nt just curve out at 1,700, but electronically governed at 1,700. Must less friendly to drive. But, so far, even though I'm still working on the mpg, it is far better than the Acert Cat.

In the early 2000’s we were selling 25 Rattlepillars to 1 ISX mostly due to the Signature 600 oops and excellent product support from our Cat distributor.Couple or 9 bays bizzy fixing broken rocker arms on Cats but they got that sorted. From what my bad memory can ‘member the main trouble with EGR Cummins’s’z was coking of the rings (requiring inframe) from excessive idling (or not), and EGR cooler failures from not maintaining the rad cap pressure allowing cavitation at the exhaust/coolant place if meeting in the cooler. The engine electrons system is touchy about poor voltage leading to misfiring.

Both brands like to spring oil leaks in the front structure. And break the odd camshaft. You can drive a 3406/C15 with a broken crankshaft but the clutch doesn’t want to open to allow shifting into gear.

The above jibber jabber is subject to 90% of those trucks were hauling 70 ton super B’s or 100 ton oil rigs not Interstate 5 axle loads.

    Over

Pretty much exactly what youtube university says too. I'll have to remember the "Cummins's'z" reference.😁 This X15 E is supposed to have ISX genetics. EGR and sensors seems to be common complaints.

Do you know much about cab and sleeper air conditioning? I have an idea, but I need to run it by someone with experience.

You traveled into California for the first time, and didn't get any Cali stuck to your shoes?

I grew up in California and all of my relatives still live there. My father worked for the USPS and my mother raised me and my 5 brothers and sisters.  Perhaps you haven't heard that most people no longer think it's cool to be a bigot.  Grow up.

bigotry: prejudice against a person or people on the basis of their membership of a particular group.

My late girl friend was from Cali. I have lots of farm friends in northern Cali. Cari's (said late gf) daughter lives in Turlock.

When Cari's daughter came up here to live with us for two years for some sort of internship(?) for grad school, she was just like you. Had no idea what humor was. Triggered at the first joke. Triggered at everything actually. Mad at everyone that had an opinion that differed from hers. Mad that Cari and I did'nt support socialism and the woke movement. Just an overall grouch and pee'd off person.

Then, after some time had passed, she started to see that we were just fun'n, and that laughing and an occasional smile not only felt good, but got better results when she tried to make friends here. After about a year, she actually made a humorous reference to California.😲 She finally figured out that our reference to Cali was just in humor and not any sort of disdain for the people.

I still stay in contact with her weekly, even though she moved back to Turlock to live with her dad. She has managed to keep her newly found sense of humor, even though they asked her to leave it in the receptacle at the border.

Maybe it's too late for you to loosen up and find a sense of humor, I don't know. I feel sad for you. But I also know you don't care. Being triggered is just part of your life.

My '05 has a Processor that states, 6NZ S/N, NON emissions, nothing to the contrary anywhere on truck where I have photos of Engine as received it, apart.  Is NOTHING to indicate was ever anything EXCEPT a 6NZ so it is good.  Spoke to CAT here, they do a test Plug In to see what engine is Noted, do not give a hoot what shows under the hood as these are now nearly 20 years aged with so many having 'Yard parts' to replace failed and expensive pieces as the Main Rocker arm cover/engine brake system support.  All will work to any engine after the 3406E, ALL S/Ns.  Cat only used a Tape Tag on their engines, primarily as they could build ANY production model off any block after the 06E, their own terminology, Frankenmotors.

Would not ever take into CA, the requirements for there is a MAXIMUM Mileage limit  1000/1 week that can be achieved simply running lower 1/3 of state as NON Emission, and fuel OVER $6/gallon.  I can spend my hard earned cash a lot more readily and economically in other states.

I second that motion. I'm sure Cali is beautiful and all that, but........

A couple months ago though, I actually travelled into California for the first time in my life. It was mother's day actually. I was leaving my property in Christmas valley, and went to Klamath Falls to visit friends. When I left there, I took 199 to 101. Never again. But thankfully I never had to get out of the truck, so no Cali stuck to my shoes.😲

Whether a "deleted" truck will be a problem is anybody's guess.  And ONLY a guess.  No one really knows, yet.

My philosophy is to buy a late enough truck to have emission system that has the bugs out of it.  As mentioned above, 2016 or later.

That said, the original question was whether to buy a particular truck.  I would investigate what it would cost to put the truck back to original before making the final decision.

Ya, I'm leaning toward moving on. I fear inspections and testing are coming soon to the Willamette valley. Intact trucks are available in the price range, just need to find one as clean and corrosion free with a non-smoker driver history.

  8.  I don't want to drive my nice 2021 rig in de-icer during the winter. So I am considering a second rig just for winter running. A much simpler machine, very little water with heated tanks, for short durations, mainly to my property in south central Oregon.

I found a 2013 truck that has been deleted, but is a very well kept truck with non smoker owner/driver.

1: Deletes done wrong are as much expensive as broken emissions.

2: what have any of your heard or learned about rv emission testing or requirements going forward, as in nation wide etc.?

    Any other thoughts or opinions?

Final solution to close the thread. Drain valve is 1/2” -14 NPT.  Found a barbed fitting in brass at HD.  I originally put on 1/2” i.d. clear vinyl hose and ran along the rail but after researching melting point of the vinyl tubing felt engine heat “might” become an issue so switching to 1/2” i.d. heater hose for the run.

👍 Ok, now, just for conversation sake, not advice, but "heater" hose typically has no fuel rating. I have had even old school fuel rated hose dissolve in new fuel. Of course that took time, not over night or anything. But if the valve is at the davco, then heater hose would be no worry. If however, the hose open to fuel 24/7 and the valve is later on the frame, I'd worry about the fuel softening the heater hose and rupturing. Just fwiw. IMO etc.

  10.  I have one in the truck, and it is on, but I dont seem to be in a cb traffic area here in Oregon. Now and then I'll be on the same road and direction for a short while as someone, but mostly I just hear a few job site users for a few minutes, then nothing.

Hopefully soon there will be a neighbor travelling with me occasionally in their rig, and they also have a cb, so maybe then it'll get some use.

Here is a thought out of the box!  The problem with 12VDC is the number 12.  It does not take much to eat it up.  120 Volt AC is much more forgiving.  A 10% drop is no big deal.

Why not use an inverter on the truck that will sustain a 30 amp output (overkill).

(Power = voltage times amps or 13.6 x 30 = or 378 watts.  So jump up to 500 watts.  Feed that to the trailer converter.  The converters will take an AC input as low as 105 volts. Run the whole trailer charging system while driving down the road.

Safety would be a concern of course.  Use 12 AWG heavily insulated extension cord.  Three wire is a must.  Wrap with extra insulation at all metal contacts.

Fuse at the truck inverter at 15 amps.

Use twist-lock connectors to connect truck to trailer.

Add a simple on/off/on switch and land the original trailer converter AC wires to one side and the truck AC to the other thus insuring no other trailer AC systems can grab the trucks AC.

👍 I think they make a shielded HD 3 wire abrasion and weather resistant, for mobile use. IIRC....(ya right, I'm old) I bought some at Platt many years ago. Or do you think shielded would even be a good idea?

Thanks.  Yeah, I just found that same page.  I found the 382 specs page but it didn’t list drain size.  Parts page showed it.  I’ve got some braided fuel hose so probably just barbed fitting and hose clamp.  Wife doesn’t like me getting “greasy “ ever time we’re leaving on trip by reaching between the rails, lol.

I absolutely hate the smell of ulsd. I do everything I can to not get that stuff on me if I'm going to be in a cab. I don't know why, it just bothers me. Gear lube, or most any other service product not so much. But the ulsd, more so than the old diesel, really bothers me.

In my first truck the curtains didn't have many of the "Hooks". I could still use them and fashioned some of my own hooks after pricing the little ones from Volvo. WAY too much money for a bent wire, even if it was sharpened.

The new to me truck had all the hooks, but the track was falling because of the broken "Plastic" clips. Found some replacements (Not the $3.00 each Volvo ones) $25 for 25 including shipping. They are exactly the same, except in white. Problem is the aluminum track has bent over the years of non support and trying to clip it into the clips was almost impossible on the passenger side, and so far is impossible on the drivers side. After several hours yesterday I quit. Was starting to get hot in the cab. I'll try in the fall when the temps are cooler, but not cold enough to make the clips brittle.

    zhKA0sgl.jpg

If you are going try this, replace them one at a time. There is a small spacer behind the fabric that is not attached to it's spot. Got lucky and found the one that dropped out if here when I couldn't get the screw to go in. The spacer had turned sidewise and when I looked fell on the floor. Thankfully I found it and got it to stay long enough to get the screw started and secured.

    Rod

Not sure how close to the windshield the Volvo curtain gets, but my Pete 567 the curtain stays a ways back and allows the dash to get quite hot. I would think it similar to volvo as the 567 has a wider one piece windshield like the volvo.

I did leave the track in place, just removed the stops at the end and slid the curtain assembly out. The stored position of the cab curtains interferes with the stored position of the sleeper curtains and makes a heck of pile of curtains right behind my head when driving. So that's why I'm looking for the separate dash shade. I can just fold it and put it in the sleeper cubby when not in use, and not have to deal with the bulky curtain pile when driving.

  14. 8 hours ago, Darryl&Rita said:

Your truck didn't come with the windshield curtain?

It did, but I removed them as they are a real pita to keep folded when not in use. When new, they are nicely folded and strapped into their corners. Once used, they never go back. Just too much clutter in that area right beside my head. So I'm looking for a shade that I can just setup when needed, and fold to store in the sleeper cubby when not.

  15. Finally spending enough time out and about in the rig, so need a sunshade for the windshield.

Which brand or type do you use or have used and either like or dislike? I see several on amazon. I dont think I need a custom fit shade, but it's a tougher decision when you see sunshades for semi trucks listed with rearview mirror cutouts. So far I've only ever come across one day-cab with a rearview mirror and that's because I installed it. But.....

     Thanks.

  16.  If the mods wish to delete this reply, I understand. However since we are on the topic of type of campground, the space and reservation topic is brought up, I wish to give a shout out to "Secret camp and RV park" just off 101 in southern Oregon at the Rogue river. In may I was caught out short in the evening and all of the parks I called went to voicemail except Secret. I told him the situation, and he said come on back, I have a spot for you. Met me at the driveway, pointed to the spot with power and water. I paid cash, and had a great time. Quiet. Unloaded the XR, went to town for a few groceries, and slept well. Next morning rode to the beach for a few minutes, loaded up and went to the office to say thank you. Told the manager thank you so much for the last minute stay. He is a humorous old sailor that left me with a quick bit of wisdom.

He said" and remember, it's always better to have a bottle in front of me, than a frontal lobotomy". Said with a sailor slur, you can find the humor.

I’m looking at HDTs.  Most of them seem to be tandem sleeper rigs.

Yep, I get it. My reference was that MDTs are over 10k gvwr and for change of class purposes, "can" depending on your state, be quite similar to an HDT.

  18.  I think the majority of MDTs are "day cabs". ?

My state, Oregon, has a website "askODOT.com" I have used it many times with absolutely awesome results. It's important to leave contact info, like your cell phone number if your state has such a site.

Also, often a state requires a percentage of their criteria be met, not usually 100%.

As rickeieio mentions, the resource guide has a lot of great info.

This weekend took the truck and trailer on a few day trip to Crossville, TN for some maintenance work.  Had four new airbags put on and antifreeze hoses, reservoir, and liquid changed.  I use J&K Truck repair and have always been very pleased with their work and prices.  They called me a few hours after the truck was in the shop and wanted to show me something.  Apparently on the Volvos the ram air intake hose to the turbo and the lower radiator hose are in close proximity.  Somehow a rock had wedged between the hoses and rubbed both hoses paper thin in an area about the size of a half dollar.  Either hose could have given way.  The air hose would have just been power loss but the radiator hose would have been a catastrophe with immediate shut down.  May want to periodically crawl under the truck and look around…something I haven’t done in a couple of years.

Yep. It can be all too easy to find excuses or reasons to not get the creeper out or cardboard, or.... and crawl under there, but the underside is where all the work gets done and the most abuse takes place.

Carl, if Vern's Cummins is similar to our ISX, the "primer" pump. or primary fuel pump, is electric.  A lot of farm equipment uses the same pump, a simple little cube that sits there and merrily buzzes away.

It's been too long now, but IIRC, the n14 has no charge system. It is literally a mechanical suction.
